2014 Expedition Granted Finalist: Inside A Volcano | National Geographic

hi I’m dr. Carolyn porchetta I’m a JPL
based NASA postdoctoral fellow in a
program administered by oakridge
associated universities the expedition I
would like to have granted is going
inside a volcano I’m a volcanologist who
did my training at the University of
Hawaii at Manoa and I’m augmenting those
skills at JPL with robotics engineering
I’m doing this because I want to build a
robot then we’ll go inside Kilauea
volcano and map for the first time ever
a volcanic conduit and what does that
mean that means what is the shape of the
pathway where magma comes from death to
the surface we don’t actually know that
in fact just two years ago in Kona
Hawaii nearly 200 volcanologist got
together and discussed research on
volcanism around the world over the past
hundred years that is similar to that
seen in Hawaii we also discuss where the
next hundred years of research might and
should go my specialty from my
dissertation was Fisher geometry was a
long linear crack that erupts like we
have never had a chance to measure a
volcanic come to it before because they
usually get buried or destroyed during
an eruption but I found a few in Hawaii
and this is the perfect opportunity to
do novel science so we have impact we
have originality and we have viability
I’m applying for this money in
particular because my fellowship only
provides enough money for me and the
robot to get to Hawaii but in all
reality I need the team it’s a two to
three person job to maneuver the robot
and make it a successful campaign and
this expedition granted money would get
the rest of the team to Hawaii with me
and I’m becoming more of a roboticist
every day and the robot assistant be
doing more volcanologist so we are going
to be paving the way for the future for
understanding volcanic comedy already
built one robot tested it in Hawaii and
now on our second robot you saw the data
from that test in this video and if you
liked what you saw give us your boat we
would greatly appreciate it thank you so
much for your time and for listening
Aloha
