first of all I wanted to find out if my
dad was actually telling the truth
could climbing a tree actually hurt it I
decided to talk to one of the world’s
foremost experts on trees
her name is canopy Meg Loman she works
at the California Academy of Sciences
she’s basically like the jane goodall of
giant trees
you’re an arborist I arbor knot even
which is a person that explores the tops
of trees
I met Meg at the redwood forest the Muir
Woods a national park near San Francisco
a famous hippie town so here’s something
about this force there’s less than 3% of
our original forests left in all of
America and this is one of the places is
what we call OG yeah everything that
might have been here a thousand years
ago might still be here if we could
climb up and explore it but we actually
can’t because it’s a little too Delhi
well it was a great choice for tree
climbing episode we can’t climb these
trees because why this forest is really
really precious canopy meg is like a
doctor for the forest she climbs trees
to make sure they’re healthy but she
also studies the organisms in the
ecosystem around the trees and she let
me use some of her super high-tech fancy
scientific equipment it’s called a
porter that I used to sample insects so
if I want to go I’m sorry
it’s literally called a pooter gonna let
that pass without coming all hold on you
got it what kind of animal is it fly
really what is that weight that thing is
the stinger that you don’t want to put
that in your pooter what is a tree a
tree is a green plant meaning it makes
energy for all of life on earth their
cells die at the end of every season so
the whole center of a tree is dead wood
but it’s support it’s really critical
for the living part of the tree because
it holds the leaves up is it possible
for me to hurt a tree by climbing it it
is possible yes you don’t want to
squeeze it because it will strangle
those living cell
okay and secondly if you use spikes you
could puncture the tree and then you
could let bacteria or fungus get in and
infect the whole tree I don’t want to
hear about any of you putting spikes in
trees that’s right I will come find you
I’ll give you a black eye yes you would
have to
