my parents told me I would bring
anything home birds squirrels chipmunks
I’d crawl under buildings for cats and
kittens and everything so animals were
just something that I’ve always liked I
was born into the military my father was
a retired command sergeant major served
in Korea and Vietnam my company
commander didn’t want to send a woman to
dog school because he didn’t think a
woman could do it so I ended up having
to call the Department of the army and
might write my congressman and finally
they said well we’re short dog handlers
in Germany if you want to be go to dog
school then you have to go to Germany I
said no problem I went to a Lackland Air
Force Base for my training and was the
only female in my class so they gave me
the only green dog in the class that had
never been through the course before
another way to try to make me fail
except that the dog was an exceptional
dog and did everything I told it to do
in the 70s all these guys wanted these
big macho dogs that were ferocious and
mean and showed their teeth all the time
King was the cross between a lab and a
shepherd and he was a smaller dog but he
had a nose on him and he could track
anything there were not a lot of women
it was still all-boys Club I was the
only female on my dog team out of like
18 people and they would never let me
try to track their saying oh your dogs
the wilshire dogs never going to go do
anything because he was one of these
happy-go-lucky dogs that he just sort of
wander all over the place but as soon as
he smells something that meant work
he knew work they tried taking him away
from me once because they didn’t think
he was going to protect me but for an
old dog he could still do everything
that he was supposed to do
and he was a hand he liked his picture
