is it easy or difficult to build company
culture well today I’m going to give you
my six guidelines on how to do that
it’s easy to build a culture if you’re a
cultured person but what if you’re not
well number one you need to set a
foundation you can basically on either
who you are or what’s important to you
what do you want your customers to feel
when they look at your brand when they
see your logo when they see your product
how do they feel how do you like to be
treated when you work somewhere how do
you not like to be treated you want to
base your culture on your past
experiences what you loved what you
didn’t love what you wish you had what I
like to do is I like to examine other
companies what are they doing how are
they involving their employees what are
the perks of working there there’s so
many things going on in young companies
nap rooms company bicycles to get some
point A to point B really cool food
options a sleeping room I mean you name
it there’s all kinds of things that you
can do to engage your employees and
build a culture around your brand why do
people want to work there why do people
want to work for you what is your
culture what is your what is your
message what do you have to offer you
have to really think about that and set
your foundation number two is hire right
hiring right or hiring wrong can make
you or break you it is so extremely
important to listen to this point you
want to find people who are loyal who
are honest no hidden agendas who work
hard who are hustlers and one of my
number ones is I can’t stand greedy
people who are entitled that’s a
character issue you cannot change
character you can’t teach good character
you’re either born with it or you’re not
if you hire one bad person you have one
bad egg in your office it’s like a virus
it’s dirty and it spreads and it just
eats people’s spirits and it can run
everything that you’ve worked for to
build your culture number three is
retain good people and which is
different from hiring right because
using once you’ve hired the person now
you have to retain them you have to make
sure that you build them up you want to
develop leaders so eventually your
business can work on its own it’s like a
well-oiled machine so you basically want
to duplicate yourself you know maybe
there are six parts of being an
entrepreneur and six parts of the way
you run your business
that you really like what does it take
six people to duplicate that getting
great get those six people have one
person duplicate this if you can’t
duplicate your scheduled duplicate the
way you run things the way you ship
things your packaging and you’ll have
all of those people that equal you but
now you have a business that’s running
itself so when you step away you have
the ability to do that with no worry
because you’ve duplicated yourself
you’ve built good leaders and they’re
taking over the process for you when
you’re building leaders and retaining
the people that you hire and keeping
them happy they help spread and build
what you’re working for they help build
your brand first as new people when you
have a new person that comes on they
have no idea what’s going on so it takes
it takes weeks months to develop them in
to what your culture is and sometimes
they get it and sometimes they don’t you
always want to make your employees feel
needed that’s a huge part of culture if
you don’t feel needed at a job or in a
workplace or at a company you don’t give
your best
I mean why if you feel like you’re just
a number you’re just clocking in like
why would you give a hundred percent so
you always want to give people incentive
makes them feel needed make them feel
valuable and want to do it in the
company and that they’re an important
part of the day to day number four you
would have cell division you have to
have a vision and you have to sell it to
the people who you want helping you
create that vision and work on that
vision you want people who know what’s
next and they want to be a part of
something bigger that’s part of building
your culture you have to set realistic
expectations for these people you can’t
lie to them you have to let them know
hey this is a new company but within
five years this isn’t that within ten
years this this is that if you say hey
come on board I’ve got this new company
by next year we’re gonna be selling 2.4
billion dollars we’re going to have this
this mat I’m going to have this artist
come in we’re going to have a
state-of-the-art kitchen that’s
unrealistic you have to set realistic
goals for your business depending on its
stage so that the people you bring on
can help you bring that to life one of
the things that cripples a new
entrepreneur is wanting fast results
people are obsessed with fast results
you
to be realistic with yourself you have
to be realistic with the people who are
helping you build your brand and not
expect results overnight there are some
overnight successes yes but to build a
brand to build a culture to create a
business that has longevity it takes
time
number five be unique cater to what your
employees would like cater to their
individual needs let’s face it even
being a business is all about sales even
if you’re not specifically selling a
product you’re selling your vision to
your employees you want them involved so
what better what when you go to
Starbucks what do they do they ask for
your name they write your name on the
cup if they misspell your name what
happens you get mad you get pissed off
you can’t even spell Kelly they spelled
it with an IE I’m not a girly Kelly I’m
an entrepreneur individual Kelly minds
with a strong why your name means
everything and that’s the same thing
when you’re dealing with people on an
individual basis you want to cater to
what’s going to make them happy so if
someone’s that thinks they’re a Disney
Princess for their birthday throw a
Disney princess party you’re not going
to be the happiest employee ever so you
want to cater to what their likes are
it’s not that hard all you have to do is
pay attention pay attention to what they
say pay attention to what they like and
make something little happen one of the
ways you can be unique is play games
with the offices but make them mean
something okay so say so you’ve got a
launch you’re doing or a new campaign
make it fun go buy some gift cards what
I did one time I bought a $5 Starbucks
gift cards boring okay I mean everyone
wants a cup of coffee
I bought a $10 del Taco coupon or
whatever it’s called gift card and then
I bought a $75 HomeGoods gift card right
what do you want you want the $75 homes
as a gift card so I got everyone
involved and they had to talk about what
the launch was and we played little
games and at the end of it at the end of
the 20 minutes is all it took everyone
got a gift card and that one person was
super happy they got $75 at HomeGoods
and what it cost cost me a hundred bucks
that hundred dollars I guarantee turned
into such a productive day such a
productive week and that campaign was a
success so it’s all about the little
things okay but I have a disclaimer I
have a warning for when you’re a small
business
hey this is something that we all get
mixed up in we all want to be friends
with everyone but when you have a small
office I’d say small would be 1 to 10
employees and you do something fun you
have to be really careful about crossing
those guidelines it’s hard not to mix
business and personal life I get it
especially when you’re small office they
hear your phone calls they hear all of
your business moves they hear everything
that you’re doing it’s super important
to keep things a little bit at an arm’s
length so you want to be able to have a
nice balance of keeping the office fun
but also protecting your personal
conversations and everything that’s
going on with you personally and your
personal decisions in business because
it’s none of their business because it’s
not their business it’s your business
number six is you want to turn your
brand into a cause I’m not talking about
saving lives or for every stock you get
a stock for every meal you get a meal it
doesn’t have to be that extreme I’m in
fashion what am I gonna double you is we
buy a pair of cute booty pants you can
get a pair of cute booty pants for a
child in need you know you just need to
have a little cause what is what is the
purpose of your business what are you
trying to say to people so for me I want
people to love themselves it’s that
simple what are you selling are you
selling them I don’t know you’re selling
chocolate chocolate equals happiness you
know it could be something so little
like what is your purpose what are you
selling and what is your message to the
person so you want to have you want to
have your brand be a cause something
that Patrick is really good at is people
know his personal story that
automatically generates oh it generates
some type of excitement it’s a spirit
that you want to help him build what his
vision is like seeing everything he’s
gone through everything that I’ve gone
through when I when I talk about my
personal story you know I can make you
cry if you if we sat down for an hour
you and I so you want to make sure that
people know your personal story but you
don’t want it to be a pity party you
want it to be an inspiring story you
want it to mean something you want to
you want it to give value when your
personal story has value it makes it
makes the people around you the people
working for you on board to help you and
to lift you up it makes you human it
makes you likeable and it makes people
want to help you alright guys so those
are my six points on how to build your
company culture I want to leave you with
three last questions
do you even have a company culture why
do people want to work for you why do
they want to join your team what do you
have to offer and number three how can
you expand or approve on your company
culture I want you to do something are
we to go back to your office to your
business your employees I want you to
shock them I want you to do something
crazy and mix things up get them excited
again all right so I want you to comment
below I’m excited to read those I want
