SOS fellow is a project that not only
restores used bicycles but also trains
workers for the workforce hi I’m Rebecca
Brayton and welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’ll be learning more about this
program tell us about the SOS failure
project what is its main mission help
person between 18 and 55 years old that
are far away from work to have a job by
recycling by painting by selling bike
welding doing special project to get
back their self-confidence and after
that 90 95 percent of people that finish
the program will get a job would you be
able to show us the process that a
bicycle goes through to become an eco
villo yeah sure we’ll go and show you
the raw material and all the process hi
everybody
what we do is we shut down bikes we
prepare them to get sand it and paint it
so you can see all around you we have
all the stuff that we keep all the
wheels from the old bike everything we
use about like 20 different boxes to
recuperate everything like derailleurs
stem seat poles see whatever we can sell
back whenever we can reuse on the bike
we do but now we have yeah we started
like two days ago right now and he’s
trying to learn how to adjust a bike so
this is like a model bike so we can like
practice before it goes on the line
these two guys start at the same time as
the guy before Pierre and now they’re
working on the second step so you’re
trying to fix a real bike this is a
practice bike so they have like about
four days to learn all the basic skills
and after that they put them right like
in action so this is our sandblasting
Department is very small it’s one
machine one guy operation we need to
strip down the bikes because most bike
we get they’re really rusted or they’re
in bad condition so if you want to clean
them and make sure they’re they go back
and their proper order and they’re safe
this is where it’s happening this is the
painting booth so we have the
ventilation and everything
we have to follow very very strict rules
to respect the environment when you saw
the first section where we stripped the
bikes this is where they end up here on
your line okay and once the bike is done
what you have on this side here this is
a done bike so it’s painted it’s
everything you went through the December
icing Department it’s painted put
together by the student so this is where
they end up we get around 5,000 bikes a
year donation wise so it’s a huge number
so we have to treat all these bikes we
put back about 3,000 bike I think in the
system and all the rest is shut down and
we build stuff with it so we don’t lose
anything we make candle ears we make
table we make all sorts of stop whatever
to you what makes this project unique I
think it’s the human side I think that’s
important with it was the lower the way
they take care of their employees the
way they help at least a hundred people
per year build their skills and you know
find them jobs there’s also the
environmental side to it so since 2007
we’ve been working on the 3 R’s reduce
reuse and recycle and as Louisville Oh
does the same thing with bikes so
sometimes we think something is all that
we can just get rid of it but you know
what it can have a second life and it’s
better for the environment thank you
very much thank you
you
