we’re going into a world that as long as
humans have been on this planet they
looked across the surface of those vast
oceans and what went on below was out of
sight and out of mind
I was in Kimba in 1996 and I remembered
these blue glittering reefs
I made some pictures for a story called
the Carl Eden and I said I’ve always
wanted to come back here the great
island of New Britain like big banana
cradles this little Bay and there’s a
long Peninsula that sticks out of it
it’s a place of seamounts rising up from
great deeper water almost to the surface
the sea mounts are full of Carl it’s
like no other place throughout the great
archipelago of Indonesia Bradford is the
most spectacular dive yet as a sea mount
called Bradford Shoals it rises up from
the deep it is rounded steep shouldered
and has an immense school of Chevron
Barracuda which swim around in great
circles almost making funnel shaped
clouds round they go
spooling upwards
when fish move in a circular pattern
they create the rarest thing in the sea
which is a geometric pattern a place
that has no corners and no edges
geometry and a place of weightless chaos
there’s another place called an Sophie
there is a field of absolutely beautiful
purple lace Carl and we worked there
photograph
picture half and a half out of the water
one of the things I particularly like to
do and as we were working father and son
came up and dug out they were fishing
there and fishing in front of us stayed
there for a little bit and gave them one
lunch later on it was one of those
lovely days where everything worked out
I want to be able to tell a story I have
to be able to tell a story to peel back
the layers of the ocean to try and
explain how important a vital and at the
very base line how intensely beautiful
the oceans over
