Bent : A Play About The Challenge of Survival

it’s estimated that over 1 million gays
were slaughtered during World War two hi
i’m kristina anne watchmojo.com today
we’re going to be talking about Martin
Sherman’s play bent which deals with the
persecution of gays during World War two
can you give us a general overview about
what the plate bent is about vent is
about paragraph 175 it’s a long
forgotten law Hitler actually revived in
the time and this law states that
homosexuality is a crime what can you
tell us about the historical accuracy of
what’s portrayed in the plane we did a
lot of research to make sure that we’re
as close to reality as can be we all
know about the Jews and the yellow star
you will see that there but again not a
lot is known about the pink star the
blue the red the green and the brown and
what’s the different significance of
these different stars that you’re
talking about Green is a criminal red is
political we have the pink for
homosexuality we have the yellow for
Jews how do you go about preparing to
direct this work and helping the actors
through with the difficult material
research reading rereading the play
finding all the nuances within each line
each scene each act I have to find the
balance between my vision and what the
actors offer generally I find that this
play more than just attacking the very
specific issues tackle some broader ones
i think that the subject of forbidden
love of acceptance of oneself that
regardless of sexuality speaks to just
about everyone i mean you don’t need to
be straight or gay or bisexual or
anything to really understand those
themes i think we’ve all had someone
that we’ve been in love with who we
can’t express that love i think we’ve
all had issues of accepting who we are
and accepting others from who they are
as well so i think that those are pretty
universal themes it’s peaked ever
tolerance acceptance is very very
important it has to be part of us
