[Applause]
hi this was initially set to take place
at my old primary boarding school lab at
house so as you can imagine a whole load
of memories went back and I remembered
once there’s a bit time when me and a
few girls stumbled across a pot of red
paint and thought would be a really good
idea to work to the bottom to dine use
and attempt to replace the ground signs
welcomed and set up in the house with
welcome bobbins so needless to say we
didn’t get very far but this memory made
me think that we must have done anything
for some fun when we were at school but
instead of assessing and conforming and
learning about subjunctive and
prepositional phrases and a units of
measurement all of which are important
and I know that school can’t be all of
the fun of the seaside well as it can
but I’ve questioned whether we are
encouraging the most beneficial skills
needed for the future I think that we
are so obsessed with league tables and
fixated on grades that I think it can
skew the development of critical skill
we all need both in our personal lives
and our professional lives and that is
how we communicate and connect so I
managed to deduct some old school
reports form of my time at Lovett
homeless and art ratings to pages so the
first page highlights my academic
ability and I was pretty much getting
these new pluses all the way through
probably went damaged a bit officer and
then the second page that I’ve created
highlights something different visible
my personality so these are comments
that were made by my house mistress my
host mistress
my former teacher and I just
specifically highlighted the word
nervous that we saw because I was really
nervous and I found this win frustrating
because I knew that I had a voice and I
knew that I could be brave
I just couldn’t when I walked into the
classroom I would get these surges of
anxiety and my way of dealing with this
was to sit at the back of the class but
my home for my face and just pretend to
be invisible so I was doing well
academically but I was not developing as
a competent communicator after all
things improved a little when I went to
the local state school at 11:00 me and a
teacher took me aside after a couple
years and she said to me you don’t speak
up in class and you get really nervous
if I ask you a question
I was quite tired of being known as the
nervous invisible title so I thought
right I’m gonna go to school today and I
did and I was so petrified and nervous
that I didn’t speak and I didn’t get in
Asli so a friend of mine who’s actually
here today called me about a week later
she did that she definitely had more
influence than me but she said I’ve
spoken to the drama teacher and we need
we need someone and this is all like
okay right what is it and she says it’s
playing to happen I was like okay fine
I can do this so I played the servant in
Nicholas Nickleby and this was brilliant
for me because I realized that I could
skip in front of people and was gonna
die so if I give anything to push myself
outside my comfort zone and drama and
dance a music professor in terms of
helping me manage their anxiety and
developers are more confident
communicator but I really wanted to
learn how to put my hand up in class and
ask a question or express my views
clearly or manage that
dominant personality and I didn’t learn
this a school I didn’t learn it a
university so I went on quest to find it
and I learnt this when I went to work
for a corporate training development
company and we trained about 80% of
leaders from well-known blue-chip
organizations to communicate and what’s
fascinating is that companies were
paying thousands of pounds for one-day
training and I was seeing directors and
senior managers come on to our programs
and go back and they would continually
win pitches or they would considerably
embrace the staff motivational levels so
it was really clear that communication
training is quite transformational so I
thought actually it’s not just people
that excellent need this
it’s the ratchets it’s the middle
managers people trying to get to the
next level so I went off and I studied
various training and creating models and
code above it some programs with the
people that worked there to help the
graduates in the middle managers get to
the next level and then in exchange for
me in 2003 when my mom had a nervous
breakdown
and she went into a hospital and me my
sister my brother and I would go see her
and sometimes we couldn’t understand
what she was saying and sometimes just
wouldn’t speak at all and one day I was
sitting on the bed and there was an a4
notepad by her bed and she had clearly
written down how she felt so my comment
is about this to the nurse and the nurse
said this is how we can encourage
communication and encourage healing so I
learned more about the importance of
communication throughout this whole
process with my mom than any work or any
study that I’ve done and I saw other in
need of communication to progress in the
business world
you need communication to help you
unravel difficulties in your personal
world and I looked at my own challenge
with communication and it was a real
catalyst for me to go out and help
individuals unlock their voice and
manage pressurized situations like
interviews and meetings and this and
after a few months I was meeting many
people who had outstanding seen these
but they simply got too nervous when it
came to you nervous and they found it
really difficult to engage with somebody
else and so after a time I became really
interested in working on career
development programs and helping young
people and in 2013 I’ve teamed up with
an organization who go into schools and
write study skills and communication
programs and at the beginning of the
year I realized that I’ve trained over
10,000 people now and when you do go
into a variety of organizations and
schools you see some magnificent leaders
and some wonderful teachers but you also
notice a lot of gasps when I go in I’ve
always asked is 7 in a secondary school
who wants to come out and present back
their work and I get this competitive
sure pants and then I ask it eight and I
ask in I and I usually get about thirty
or fifty percent of people who want to
come out and share their piece and then
I go up the years my house to attend
eleven and I used to get about one or
two people who want to come out apart
from the handsome source I was in school
in North London a few months ago and all
the year elopements wanted to come out
and they wanted to share their ideas and
so I said to the headmistress at lunch
when I met her
Wow all the students wanted to come out
and they wanted to present as she said
she made communication particularly the
spoken word a priority and so it
inspired confidence in the student
but why does this matter I’m gonna share
with you three reasons today so firstly
Jack Mar the billionaire businessman
ported in the World Economic Forum at
the beginning of the year but more than
800 million jobs could be replaced by
robots in the year 2030
he said that robots will soon be able to
do what humans do so he urged teachers
to teach differently to start teaching
human skills like independent thinking
like communication skills he said if we
don’t we’re gonna be in some trouble for
now also my son were being adult then so
how am i children gonna compete with
robots
secondly technology I love it and I know
that I can be a bit of a junkie but I do
think this damaging the way that we
converse and what I mean by this is that
we are so used to texting and emailing
and you can constantly be in control of
how you’re being perceived and you can
reject perfection but then you have to
go into me sitting or in interview or
presentation if you little bit about
yourself
because suddenly you’re not in control
of how you’re communicating anymore and
actually it’s the vulnerabilities and
the imperfections and the messiness of
being human but give us that character
and inspire and connect well of people I
was in school a few weeks ago called
Alpha Team Community College and a few
days before that Andrea supp/rap you won
the world best teacher of the Year award
totally interested by the listen and I
was working with some GCSE students and
I said so why do you think she won the
award and after bit of hand up and he
said well she speaks our language she’s
different
so how is she different he said we know
she’s child like she’s painful but
that’s me sounds like a human spirit in
character connecting
but thirdly and the subject this close
my heart is mental health more than one
in four people according to status
recently will suffer from mental health
problems in the future and I like many
other people in this world because in
the full spectrum we know boy you
approached me recently to tell me that
you had mild depression right the way
through to the black hole that
talking listening understanding the
impact that we have on others can
alleviate suffering so if we want our
children to compete with robots to fight
for what they believe to inspire other
people with their ease and their ideas
then we need to be encouraging
communication skills at school how do we
do this not just explore here but I
would suggest we make well-being a
priority and the physical part of the
culture at school not just a room at the
end of the corridor that doubles up into
the stationery cupboard also encourage
debating encouraged presentation skills
encouraged performances I actually found
a school that’s near me I’m Gord Fern
Hill and they have an initiative called
Penn speak and I’m really interested by
this I wanted to find out more so I
called them and they told me that all
the students learned through
presentation skills programs and they
run monologues and juror logs and she
said to me that have made a big
difference how confident the students
that not only in all of their subjects
but it helped them reveal skills that
they simply didn’t know they had and I
would love to see these initiatives in
all schools so I’m still that nervous
girl but the difference is it doesn’t
harm me hold me back in any way in fact
quite the opposite
thanks to a few people I know
how to turn it into an entity that
continues to take me down this
wonderfully one key part of
unpredictability exploration and
discovery it’s my only hope that my
five-year-old meets people along the way
that are able to unlock his most
confident voice he came home from school
a few months ago when he was only four
and my dad and he had a badge on a
school counselor called me and said so
what does this mean darling
word for word he said I went into a
meeting today mommy and I did maybe sit
into the drink
and I talked about how my comics were
better so even if he is inheriting my
burning desires of I’ll on about proving
education at least he is learning that
most valuable skill there is just speak up and communicate
