Creating Mini Therapists | Alison Knowles | TEDxChichester

I could stop now let’s just made my
afternoon thanks everybody my name is
Ali I would say I’m not the smartest
cookie in the tin and for many many
years
dyslexic few learning difficulties and
that used to be a massive chip on my
shoulder and it used to make me believe
I couldn’t achieve anything and to be
fair I’m 52 now so when I was at school
dyslexia wasn’t really picked up so for
example and I can still remember a name
mrs. Dobson
when I was about seven every time I
spell a word wrong her way of helping me
was to get me to write it out a hundred
times well I wrote it out 100 times
wrong so I grew up with this chip on my
shoulder that I could never be as good
as anyone else because of my reading and
writing which is fundamental in our
world now isn’t it you have to be out of
fill forms and do stuff interesting how
fate turns around doesn’t it I trained
to be a therapist but I couldn’t be a
psychotherapist because I didn’t have a
degree so I thought that the one thing
that I really cared about which was
working with people and helping them
through their problems that I could
never do so for okay well I’ll just go
on some courses and see how I get on my
P do so I went on a hit in therapy
course that was fun so don’t the guys at
the front don’t do that because it does
work okay just saying I went on a CBT
course because we all know if you don’t
do CBT you can’t work for the NHS
because that’s pretty much what they do
do you know that pretty much that’s the
truth
and I found that I was really really
loving what I was learning but I was
struggling with it because I’m not that
smart well no I disagree that now I
actually am dangerously intelligent I
decided right we were talking about
surfing for self-worth earlier on and
what you believe yeah that’s the way to
travel chaps
can overcome anything in here so I was
just taking on all this training and I
was anything I could get just to make me
the best therapist I could be but the
one thing that I decided was that I
didn’t want to be the kind of therapist
that kind of clipboard and went hmm
so you’re a number 52 are you and go to
the script the only time that you can
guarantee what a number 52 is is at the
local Chinese restaurant
no I’m saying yeah none of us are
identical and the therapy out there at
the moment kind of needs you to be title
upstream solution I went to a mental
health conference last year and i sat
there listening facts and figures and
I’ll get it out the way right at the
moment 3.7 million kids in the UK
receiving mental health treatment but
there’s no because they don’t know that
was the World Health Organization’s
figures our government will say
something else but they’ll both be wrong
because they might be receiving pay
treatment but they’re not the only ones
that need treatment
there’s probably that figure again the
new treatment but don’t access it why
culture cost stigma you just love the
word mental health that’s gonna make you
just stand up and line up isn’t it I’ve
got a mental health problem so let’s
start right now okay let’s call it
emotional well-being because that’s what
it is it’s nothing to do with mental
health it’s to do with how you feel and
how you see and view the world as a
speakers before me into that so we’ve
got all these people and this is
disappeared so we’re not even talk about
the numbers of adults because you can
times that by 10 and as I said to my
maths Matt’s not good for just a lot of
people do you remember that advert a
little while ago there was a third world
helping out people dying to have gotten
their food which is disgusting might
been in Stone Age and it said give a man
a fish remember that one
yeah well in theory it’s a good idea in
it because if someone’s hungry give them
a fish they won’t be hungry
brilliant but if you have to do that
every day for the rest of their life and
that is counting on the fact was just
him he hasn’t got six kids and the aunts
and uncles living because one fish ain’t
gonna cut it is it think how many fish
it would take over a lifetime I think at
the cost of all those fish financial
cost think of a bigger cost that we
never do think of the emotional cost
that poor bloke she doesn’t want
handouts he doesn’t want to be dependent
all of his life on someone else but he
will be if we just give him a fish and
in my humble opinion that’s what’s
happening with how we’re dealing with
the mental health issue in the UK at the
moment what we’re doing is we’re waiting
until someone has a mental health issue
emotional well-being and then what we do
is we say well okay I can help you if
you’ll fit in this boss please now to be
fair some people do fit in the box
rather well some people actually enjoy
fitting in the box but a lot of us like
hang on I’m here because I’ve got some
issues and you’ve just given me a bigger
one
so I know fit in your box therefore
there’s something wrong with me good
start be fair right I tried be fair it’s
how I did it there’s so many millions of
people and how on earth do you cater for
everybody it’s going to be impossible
surely that’s why we have to put people
in a box fit in this box and if you
don’t get in the box you’re being
resistant to treatment mm-hmm it’s not
the therapist you being resistant so
consequently we have all these people in
the system needing I’ll call it what it
is at the moment mental health assistant
and because there’s so many of them
we’ve got this backlog of people that
really do need to access mental health
assistance but the Karma because there’s
no nefarious and there’s a waiting list
did you know Cambridge where I’m from
and this is a fact you pretty well have
to be suicidal before you get on the
list because the waiting list is that
long I’m therapists I have kids and
adults come to me if I have met them six
months earlier they’d have had a
low-level anxiety and some self-worth
issues which is not to be stopped
because that creates what all of us in
this room are because we’ve all gone
would carry them from childhood by the
time I get them because they’ve waited
and waited and waited I’ve got 10
year-olds are self harming for goodness
sakes and with eating disorders because
that low self-worth has escalated now
that’s not sensationalism that’s the
truth so what’s going wrong not enough
therapy so what did the government do at
this conference I said well okay I know
we’re gonna do we’ll just throw more
money at it and create more therapists
Brillion no help
it will help cause it will come fire
fighter but it will help it’s like
giving a man a fish but it will help
provided you fit in the box of course if
you don’t fit in the box it’s not gonna
help you hey Who am I and they asked for
an extreme solution now me I need things
to be simple because if they’re not
simple I don’t understand and if anybody
uses a long word with me I’ll switch off
cuz I don’t need no idea what they’re
talking about and I quite enjoy that I
don’t know used to bother me now I’m
like I’ve no idea what you’re saying
and good before letters anything over
that you’re on your own it works there’s
more of us than there is of them it’s
true I used to work with just adults and
then because I’m quite childlike
somebody brought that kid to me and his
name was Holly surprisingly and I said
hey what’s the matter of you anyway I’m
angry okay that’s nice
tell me something else about you I see
it I’m just angry
how do you know you’re angry mum tears I
am okay I only mum that teaches I am as
well and what happens it’s these kids
then take on that generalization of I am
angry and once they’ve got it blame it
out do they do it well he was the best
angry I’ve ever seen he was he was class
act but you see that’s what I mean about
putting people in a box because what
happened is he was kicking off at school
or whatever he was doing and teachers
st. Joe’s parents don’t anyway oh my god
that’s definitely an angry behavior he’s
angry that’s their perception have any
of you seen that iceberg we’ve got the
tip of the iceberg angry and then
underneath frustration scared guilty all
this that’s what was really going on but
of course young lad couldn’t tell me
because he didn’t understand what an
emotion was now schools are doing a
fantastic job they are really blooming
trying and it’s not their job I think
it’s all of ours parents family but the
schools are really trying so every
school I go into cuz we work in a lot of
schools now and let you go into the
recession I pulled up on the ball w
empathy resilience self-worth the kids
I’m working with can spell that which to
be fair is more than I can do what it
means and they don’t know how to put it
into action but you do let’s play this
is why this is a fundamental problem can
you all please point your brains it’s
anyone that hasn’t can the guy next and
just help them quietly and I laughing
you do this one slow well done can you
all point to your hearts please well
done brilliant it’s good can you’ll draw
a heart in the air please I didn’t need
you to do that I just was really cute I
did do that right just brilliant
okay you’re at TEDx talk so you’re very
smart people I know this can you all
[Music]
you get the point yeah can you’ll draw
me an emotion yeah right every day in
school at home CBT in the fairy room
we’re saying to the kids do you know
what you need excuse me picking on you
you’re sat in the wrong place you need
more emotional resilience young man and
you really need to sort out your
self-worth and build up your self-esteem
you’ll be a much better person with a
little bit of empathy trapped in just a
sip some goodwill you’ll be a lovely
person really we’re asking kids to deal
with an emotion that they can’t touch
that can’t feel they can’t get hold of
they break the bone they know
approaching the bone yet solid I can
feel it but if an emotions not quite
happy you’re not quite working what do
you do it’s not real well what you do is
you put them in a box and if they get in
that box you tell them they’re being
resistant and you throw them off the
list that they’ve been on for five
months trying to get help that’s what
you do so it was quite apparent to me
that we could actually make emotion
solid if we could make them into
something fundamental the kids can touch
feel shape that they could relate to
them a bit better and then you can do
something even better and the reason I’m
telling you this is because there is an
oxonium solution we can carry on
firefighting I’m a therapist I trained
therapists and we are flat-out trying to
help the kids and adults that have
emotional well-being issues and we will
be doing that forever
which is your business really isn’t it
so I should just leave it down a food
Wow
what if we could stop it surely
prevention is better than intervention
very radical fall in there obviously
because when I put my hand up at the
conference suggested it all these suits
when I’m your partner I do I did have a
t-shirt and jeans on probably wasn’t the
approach but that’s me
so what I could then do is if you were
brought to me because you’re angry okay
I see no no no no you’re not angry it’s
just a motion that sangre and I could
pull it out amazing feeling happened all
of a sudden little that and really
wasn’t angry anymore
just this part in my hand so he dropped
the generalization of I’m angry it
managed to open up his world to the
possibility that he’s not and that
there’s something else going on and even
more wonderful what we could then do is
ask to angry what was going on because
nine times out of ten a kid won’t tell
you because I’ll get someone into
trouble or get ourselves into trouble
but they’re quite happy to da one
another in so if you actually make the
problem part of them something
completely separate
they’ll be in all day long and then you
couldn’t even get to the problem and get
to the root but you can do something
even better and I think this is a key
this is what we’re not doing
give a man a fish feed himself give the
child a therapist who puts them in a box
maybe if they can fit and you might be
right for a few weeks but you still have
to go back because that therapist fixed
him so if it gets broken again couldn’t
hate that you’ll have to go back down
good business forever and ever you could
have these people coming back to you
because they’re always gonna need fixing
what if we did something really radical
we might be allowed to because I’ve seen
magical upset too many people but we
already believe in doing it anyway wife
when we pulled this part out rather than
me saying okay what you need to do to
sort this one out is give it more
empathy self-worth and some resilience
all this seems you understand
what if I actually said it what do you
think would help him and the strange
thing happens when I do that just tell
me what would help him and by doing so
the solving their own problem by doing
so they’re empowering themselves to
overcome the problem damn salad to that
business model if you came to me because
you’re angry and I showed you how to do
that I would really hope that you would
come back every time you were broken and
I could help you again but if you don’t
live worked it out and this isn’t just
for kids it’s for adults as well little
guy I’m angry we sorted to act we showed
him how to do with it and he does
himself now little while later primal
died and he was really sad I said doing
his talk anyone pulled it out and
Brillion on one hand I’m fantastic he’s
sorting himself that we’re moving on I’m
empowering the nation’s thought in it on
the other hand I thought Jesus I maybe I
worked
it’s a really rubbish business model but
it works we can’t put people in boxes if
we do any interventions not gonna be a
hundred percent successful and we’re
going to keep throwing the problem if we
wait until there is a problem and we
can’t stuff it there’s so much going on
social media oh I don’t have problems of
growing and learning I think there was a
time where the family unit was closer
together grand grandma all those are you
know but I wouldn’t ask my mom anything
I went to Grandma is safer but we can’t
listen I we do that so you don’t have to
give her any more family and it’s not
the same people are working on browser I
don’t know what it is
texting rather than speaking to one
another playing on computer games
remotely rather than socializing and
interacting with other kids how kids are
really suffering they don’t know how to
deal with emotions but it’s not rocket
science
we already utilizing this in schools and
you know what the teachers are blending
fantastic because they know that if I
just worked with you and I helped you
feel superpowers pull it out and sort
your emotion out and then I send you
home or back out into the classroom okay
and you sat there when you got home
right and mom said don’t try to your
bedroom
and you said hang on a minute I just
need to you get a slap so what we needed
to do was to educate everyone around the
child to use the same language so that
childhood exercise the muscle so now
we’ve got teachers using their
superpowers
it’s a coolest thing we’ve got parents
using superpowers no more naughty stairs
actually had an email we’d have a
naughty step anymore now we have
superpowers and even dads found is happy
superpower I’d like to take phrase for
that one but it’s not me
see here’s the thing we we can keep
firefighting we can keep giving the guy
fish right it’s a lovely thing we do
it’s the right thing to do if the man’s
hungry yeah but it’s going to cost a
fortune apparently at Media Matters
basically the customer emotion as well
and is juice connected and their kids
it’s not the solution or we should teach
them to fish I don’t know how much a
lifetime of fish costs I know how much
lifetime of therapy costs at the moment
on average apparently each child 10,000
to 36,000 pounds and that’s if they
don’t have to go back because they fit
it into the box nicely the first time
but if there’s a leg hanging out or
something put a number not on that it’s
big big expense isn’t it and it’s now
into it but radical idea what if what if
what if we actually told the kids how to
control their emotions rather than be
controlled by them what if instead of
dispelling empathy and resilience they
knew what it mean and they used it can
you imagine that world all the news at
the moment that world would not exist
within a generation my dreamer now we’re
proving it all we need to do is educate
the children from the off and give them
half a chance that they don’t need
therapists how much would that cost I
don’t know an hour fishing rods about 30
quid a lifetime of fish my dream is that
somebody somewhere other than the lovely
teachers and parents are already picking
up and running with this know it is
someone with the power to make the
change to make the difference that will
make all the difference records going
forward it’s time we taught our kids to
fish thank you for your time everybody [Applause]
