The Beatles and Cirque du Soleil

all together now is a documentary that
details the coming together of the
Beatles and Cirque du Soleil to create
the show love hi I’m Carol and you’re
watching watchmojo.com
and tonight we’re talking to director
Adrienne Willis so the Beatles and
Cirque de Soleil how did that happen
I’ve been working for cert for like
seven years as a freelancer
so I started by eating smaller portraits
of artists and then I kind of built my
way up and so my producer who I’ve been
working with for like seven years he’s
giving the interview there he was like
send me a Christmas card maybe a year
before I actually did this gig and he
was like how about a film with Serkan
the Beatles Merry Christmas and I was
like yeah that’s awesome so they were
like just come in please shoot for us a
little bit we’ll see what happens and I
just kept shooting and I just keep
shooting and shooting and shooting
because I saw there was a lot of
interviews with Paul McCartney with
Ringo Starr was that easy to do were
they very cooperative to work with yeah
they were great I mean Ringo Starr it
was like a 16 minute interview of which
twelve are in the film just because of
the nature of who Ringo is there are
only two of us now but in spirits as
followers you know with Paul McCartney I
spent about an hour with him talking he
was just really generous I mean I wake
up some morning to think you know I was
in the Beatles she’s like nope there’s
only four people could say that in the
world in the universe as much as it was
like following the circus process and
the Beatles process I was really
interested in trying to capture the
emotional relationships between what was
going on in this film
George Harrison had passed away George
and G who’s like the head of Cirque de
Slade had a friendship and they were
like you know we should do something
together and of course you can imagine
all the red tape and all that kind of
situation and then George passed away
and I think Olivia Harrison basically
came in and said well listen this is
like George’s last wish so all of a
sudden all the Beatles were involved so
is it a big kind of shock when you
decide when you found out that you’d
actually be able to interview Paul
McCartney and
for me was like George Martin George
when he was 36 signed the Beatles
I spoke to brew at length for about an
hour and a half with Giles they were
both really generous and when he told me
about the last time he’d seen John
Lennon you know I had never read that
I’d never heard that
suddenly out of the blue he said to me
you know George if I could I’ve recorded
everything we did again I said you can’t
be serious job I said we did some great
stuff what are you on about he said we
could have done it better
there was kind of that also the
camaraderie between the Beatles and
everyone inside the recording studio
they were talking about conversations
that they had had 40 years ago can you
talk a bit about that that was part of
the whole thing too right it was like
that’s why we mic people around them so
that they didn’t really know that the
cameras were on them because you can
imagine they’re in this big space
they’re putting on a show
and yet it’s not like these guys hang
out it’s not like George Martin and Paul
McCartney see each other every Saturday
morning for a cup of coffee
so you knew that if they were coming
together and they were working on
something but the chances are pretty
good that that working relationship is
going to re-establish itself and I was
like and that’s historical like you’ve
got to capture that but for me what’s
really strange about this is remembering
writing these things you know which is
so little a little guitar little old
piano a little bit of paper and a pencil
the back of an envelope exactly no
sergeant pepper or something just so
it’s just a little process and look
what’s happened to it
