Interview with the Director of Mulligans

described as the Graduate for a new
generation Mulligan’s is a film that
explores relationships on every level hi
I’m Kara Lena with watchmojo.com and
today we’re talking with actor producer
and screenwriter Charlie David can you
tell us about what the story is about
it’s about a family where the father has
an affair with his college age sons best
friends so then after the affair happens
and the family finds out about it the
the repercussions of that what you saw
with chase was an accident huh an
accident didn’t mean anything cheating
on your wife that is not an accident the
film is about second chances it’s about
how we define our families and our
relationships and when we deserve a
second chance so you start wrote and
produce this film can you tell me what
inspired this home it was when I was
deciding to come out as an actor about
three years ago my business partner
Lynda Carter very smart woman and she
said you know but coming out you’re
going to potentially lose some roles and
gain some roles but the best thing that
you can do is start to create your own
work from there I wrote a couple
screenplays that had way too many
explosions and children and animals and
stuff and she said okay that’s good but
for a first feature do something with
few locations
a few characters something that’s
manageable for us to tackle can you tell
me like an actor who’s come out of the
closet can you tell me what kind of
challenges you faced it was a surprise I
had some people who you know soon after
offered me roles both in hosting as well
as you know acting roles and I also had
people that I thought would be champions
for me casting and producers directors
who are members of the LGBT community
themselves who then got pretty gun shy
and kind of took a step back and thought
you know what mainstream America may not
accept that and I think we’ve seen that
timing and again once an actor comes out
they have a steady career then they come
out and it kind of goes kachunk you know
it’s like derails it for a little while
and then they have to start again for me
it was more important to to just be
myself I think it actually has helped me
as a performer as well because
previously it was like acting the role
of Charlie being the straight guy
playing whatever role i was doing we’re
now I can just be Charlie playing the
role
