beach and the head of the home team
isn’t happy about it elephant seal alpha
males are called beach masters and each
is a master of his harem of females when
another male shows up to challenge him
the resident Beach master has no choice
but to defend his turf our incumbent
beach master tries bellowing but it
doesn’t work and so welcome to
Thunderdome Beach get ready for nature’s
version of sumo wrestling each
contestant has approximately 4,000
pounds of battling blubber
this is a bloody full-body slugfest that
can go on for up to half an hour
the wounds look terrible but usually
they’re just superficial
sometimes the slashing they can do with
their three-inch lawn k-19 can cause
some nasty flesh tears like on this
guy’s proboscis
but these battles are almost never light

champion challenges like this one can
happen up to five times a week during
mating season and the loser is banished
to the far end of the beach to rest and
recover from his wounds
