Street Luge – Hold On Tight

so you like the extreme well what’s more
extreme than flying down the street at
speeds of over 70 miles per hour hey
well turn watchmojo.com i’m your host
derek and today tim is going to teach us
about the sport of street luge what is
street luge steelers is basically an
oversized skateboard made of aluminum
right there’s 27 pounds slide it has six
wheels on it for in front 20 laid out on
it feet first we have got about 120
kilometers an hour I’ve friends have got
160 plus it’s pretty fast and fun can
you tell me a little bit about the
history of Street luge how did it start
well it started off from people laying
down on the skateboards back then I was
in the 70s dad skateboards both that
long and then would lie down on those
and go in on the hill because it get
faster after that the board’s got a bit
bigger there’s some 80 would they
weren’t drop down or everything who is
basically a longboard since that has
evolved into aluminum slides which we
call unlimited street luge so a street
luge considered sport yeah it’s
considered gravity sport anything that
you’re using gravity to propel you is
considered a gallery sport what makes
this slide goes so fast well as I said
it’s 27 pounds weight has a big factor
in the speed because more inertia
creates more force it goes faster that’s
why instead what we use aluminum it’s
lost difference a lot more resilient it
doesn’t flex which makes a lot more
solid therefore wheels up front gives us
more trashy to the turns you can race
with two wheels in front to where they
listen back some people race with four
wheels in front and four and back I
choose this cuz it’s best for my weight
are there any like specific standards
that every street luge will have to have
in competition yeah there’s maximum
weight I believe it’s 40 pounds your
sled is a lot away have your sled goes
faster the lighter slides they turn
better and they accelerate a bit more
how exactly do you turn this then you
lean off the sled and you turn and the
more you lead in the more you turn
exactly it’s just like a skateboard how
do you stop this then when you’re going
100 kilometers an hour with your feet is
drop your feet down lift up on the sled
and you stop pretty quick we have tire
tread we go to the bottom of our shoes
right now I have go-kart rubber its
lakes on the bottom of my shoes it stops
really good it heats up perfectly
doesn’t chatter what about the rest of
the equipment what else you wearing
while you’re out there to protect
yourself or to hell
you go faster Nevitt leather suit the
tide you like this suit faster you go
because ever do that makes plays a big
factor we wear a helmet and once again
it’s faster just more than having over
your years you probably seems a pretty
nasty crash doesn’t probably had a
couple yourself so what’s the the worst
you’ve seen or experienced yourself out
of their competition well the worst I’ve
seen is actually the one that got me
into the sport you guys were going
through a turn one got loose and you got
a little wobbly hit the other guy both
drifted off into the hay bales the one
guy’s leg got trapped in the other guys
board and snapped in two places yeah a
compound fracture just above the knee
and just under the knee in the same leg
and so this is what got you into it I am
me my mom would built my first lose the
next day max max
