grassroots fundraising is very political
it makes people think about how they
want their community to be run how they
wanted to be funded what should be paid
for it and how it should be paid for so
yeah it’s very exciting people think
it’s some kind of just technical you
know turning out letters and turning out
emails and churning out proposals that’s
part of it but it’s way way more than
that whether you’re soliciting donations
or you’re making them fundraising
affects us all
I’m your host Leila for watchmojo.com
we’d like to help answer your questions
about raising sources of capital and to
do that we’ve brought you a former
recipient of the outstanding fundraising
executive of the Year award
Kim Klein I’d say there’s sort of three
things you need to know about
fundraising
there’s a lot of other things at very
place by place but if you keep three
things in mind you’ll really be set one
is that in order to raise money you have
to be willing to ask for it how you may
ask work is gonna vary place the place
culture to culture where they’re gonna
be more direct less direct that’s a lot
but you do have to be learned a sport
you have to have a cause that makes
sense to people and the third thing is
people do raise money for themselves by
themselves but that’s not sustainable
you really want a group of people who
all think yeah this is a really good
thing and we’re all gonna pull together
and if you have those three things in
place pretty much and you can adapt
according to your culture I mean I’ve
taught fundraising in 21 countries some
very different one from another and if
people kind of kept those three things
in mind and then add it on to it the
cultural realities and economic
realities of their situation they
generally were successful how business
savvy or politically savvy does someone
have to be to be a successful fundraiser
they need to follow some basic business
principles I think of marketing you know
being really clear about what’s your
message what’s your product what are you
trying to do in the world how are you
trying to make it better why do you
think that will succeed ideally either
either the person who starts the program
or someone in the program has some
business sense in terms of accounting
you can kind of keep track of the money
and manage budgets and so on I really
think
for success in fundraising his vision
and commitment
