author Kim Klein has taught fundraising
in 21 countries and founded the
grassroots fundraising journal in 1981
her specialty involves adapting
traditional fundraising techniques
particularly major donor campaigns to
the needs of organizations with small
budgets working for social justice I
think organizations of an obligation to
diversify their funding and make sure
that if anybody or any source of funding
said well we’re not funding you anymore
organization could say well we’re sorry
we’ll miss you but they could continue
to do their work organizations easily
get into the habit of getting government
money or foundation funding but these
forms of revenue are very uncertain what
happens when someone asked gets elected
introduces tax cuts and the money goes
away or the stock market jobs along with
foundation funding you see a lot of
organizations they have big budgets one
year and then small budgets and big and
small and they get smaller and smaller
and smaller and they lay off people and
they don’t serve society productively

leila i asked kim klein what 10 things
we should know about how to raise funds
in uncertain times be very clear about
your cause you have to be willing to ask
for money you need to keep in mind that
people are giving away their money and
they’re either going to give it to you
or they’re going to give it somewhere
else he’s seven out of ten people give
away money they’re going to give it away
I think a fourth thing is you need a
group of people to help you you cannot
do this by yourself you know that’s a
nature of an organization and if you if
you can’t find anyone to help you you
have to think to yourself does anyone
else care about this I think a fifth
thing is once you get a donation is to
be sure to thank people and to be
grateful and to be appreciative and to
keep track of your people the sixth
thing you know send people information
about how you’re doing either send them
an email cinema newsletter let them know
their gift made a difference
something would be the best person to
ask for money is someone who just gave
you money that’s a person most likely to
give you money and people kind of no no
charity game i’m never gonna ask you
again but if you think of churches how
often do churches ask i mean i use it
down right away 52 times a year so we
really want to ask over and over but
every time we ask we’re like thank you
so much what you did already could you
help us again so you know and if people
can help they’ll say no and that would
be there eight thing none of us can give
money no matter how wealthy we are we
cannot give money to all the groups that
need our support so we’re gonna have to
say no to some of them we want to be
gracious when people say yes and we want
to be really gracious when they say no
we always say in fundraising no is short
for not now I don’t have the money now I
don’t care enough now I’m busy now but a
night thing would be to be be gracious
about other groups I mean kind of know
your group is really important it’s
doing really good work but it’s not the
only group in the world that’s kind of
bringing all the other groups try to
work together try to see what you can do
collaboratively and of course spend your
money wisely all that all the stuff that
goes with that and I would say the temp
thing is actually really sit and think
yourself how should our organization be
funded what is the role of taxes and
funding it what’s the role of
volunteerism what’s the role of
corporations foundations and be clear
about that as a philosophy not just as
where can I get money those would be the
10 things I’d keep in mind
