this week’s questions right ok any big
top level decisions regarding the app so
the app I think the conclusion
preliminary was that the majority of you
want an app 91% said yes but most of you
say nothing’s really broken either so
we’re looking at the data we’re
considering two courses of action I
would say within three to four weeks
we’re gonna come back present you those
options you guys get to vote and then we
proceed we did get a lot of questions
I’d like to actually steal the mic and
ask you your thoughts on two related
questions one was which top 10 was the
most debated and argued by staff at
WatchMojo and the second one was are
there any videos that we started making
but then we stopped can you think of any
yeah well anything politics history
related that’s kind of controversial is
definitely controversial in the office
as well so we did dictators we did worst
humans in history we did you know
infamous mass shootings or school
shootings so those were all really
heavily debated and there are definitely
contingents in the office that say we
shouldn’t do them at all but we decided
that it is beneficial in the in terms of
that I adage you know
those who don’t know their history are
doomed to repeat it so but anyway the
the main one that comes to mind is top
10 hate groups which we recently put out
that one I started researching about a
year ago and decided that it wasn’t
doable in terms of how we do things it
was just not worth it so we put it on
the shelf then we brought it back off
the shelf started debating it
and came and asked you guys on what’s
your mojo what you guys thought and we
decided on an angle that we were all
happy with comfortable with and we put
that one out but it was definitely a
process for that one for sure yeah as we
say our videos are infotainment some of
them are informational some of them are
entertaining not all of them have to be
both I think with the hate groups we
were initially kind of for it then once
we discussed it we were against it and
then I personally changed my mind and
finally greenlit it when I think you
guys gave us an over overwhelming yes
let’s do it so so there was another kind
of related question how do you settle
who’s right and then also king awesome
34 asks who decides the positioning and
what’s on a top-10 let’s better not be
insinuating it’s me I mean the reality
is from day one when we decided to go
big on lists I never wanted our list to
be one person’s list
I think our initial approach in
researching was oftentimes one person
did a lot of the heavy lifting so no
matter how much they tried to make it
objective there was that bias that could
seep through very easily the lists were
still very good but then we adjusted we
introduced a suggestion tool which gives
us a lot of data from you but then we
also have our famous matrix which you
know does take a look at are you ever
gonna share the details of this famous
matrix I think one day sure I mean it’s
on rocket science but the matrix is just
you know what we refer to as looking at
previous lists and having a snapshot of
you know the research what do others
think about this and I think the beauty
of it is it kind of balances the passion
of feedback from the Mojo holics the
offices feelings towards a list
objective and subjective as well as what
the research suggests right so that
takes me to my next question by mrl 2007
in a top 10 if a suggestion gets the
highest number of up votes is that
necessarily the suggestion you list as
number one and then just figure out
something to say about why it’s number
one believe it or not it’s actually rare
that the number one on a suggestion list
becomes the number one unless if the
whole office kind of supports it but
also the matrix the other previous lists
also supported in fact once in a while I
won’t mention which one but one list
very recently that we discussed we went
against that and it would know that
everybody discussed the the debates and
it made more sense to go with what
should have like
say the number two or what could have
been number two we put that number one
but I would say in a nutshell the Mojo
holics are very passionate and vocal and
we love that but those who really use
the list of the suggestion tool a lot
are a bit younger so what we do between
the matrix the previous lists and the
suggestion is balanced out for the age
because we feel like our lists should be
representative and if you’re a thirty
year old or forty year old who wanders
through the watch motional channel you
shouldn’t be like ah this is clearly a
channel for you know 18 or 16 or 14 or
20 year olds it should be pretty
accurate the only time when I would say
we definitely do adjust things is to
take into consideration that our
audience is heavily male so we have 80
to 90 percent men on our channel now we
do 160 million views a month so the 10
to 20 percent female is 20 30 million
views it’s a big number and on a future
show we’ll discuss why we’re considering
launching either a female channel or a
series more geared towards the ladies on
the watch module channel but that’s
later so cool
last one suggested by Leo Cortes if you
had an offer for a TV show again like
topics would you consider it so I’ve
never discussed on YouTube
either through video or in the comments
who topics was for I did write an
article about it and I may link it below
the video for you guys to read if you’re
interested but it was from Mark Cuban’s
access so Mark Cuban we all know him
great entrepreneur he’s a shark that the
deal that we made for access made a lot
of sense early on but then we decided to
focus on YouTube and the Mojo holics and
then you know we exploded and when push
came to shove for us to renew and commit
to a longer slate it did not make sense
so we kind of picked you guys over Mark
Cuban it’s not a bad thing you know that
we’re saying there now last week I said
I don’t believe we should have an app
for the sake of having an app and I
don’t think we should have a TV show for
the sake of having a TV show so if we
were to do a TV show that distracted us
from you I would kill that idea it
sounds very you know great and
altruistic but I think that just that’s
just common sense but if we did a show
that could basically help us get more
mojo holics and promote the YouTube
community I’d be all over that but we’re
doing a TV show for the sake of doing a
TV show I’m not that interested now I
actually have a last one for you so a
couple of questions where will you bring
back the Travel Channel by the way we
have WatchMojo travel still available
I mean we don’t publish that much on it
will will you also be doing any of the
cooking videos which you used to do so
you’ve got a lot you’ve done cooking
interviews how to’s is there like a
specific video or style of videos that
you prefer so I’m one of those people
that can’t pick favorites but so I liked
everything the cooking videos were a lot
of fun because I got to eat food and got
to make food and I like to cook so that
was fun and it made me really popular
with my co-workers but they were also
kind of stressful because some of them
didn’t go great and that was a little
stressful the travel videos it was
always really interesting to learn about
places that I’ve never been so you know
that was a blast except for you know
those times where it’s the middle of
winter and I’m just like I want to go to
a beach it boxing is obviously something
I would never do well it’s not obviously
but something I’d never do outside of
work otherwise so that was a fun
opportunity anything like that trapeze
I’ve done which was also something I you
know they’re searching all these things
that I know that’s what I’m a little bit
stressed out about the trapeze one it
was I was sore for a month fact anyway
basically the point is I like everything
the interviews it’s I love meeting new
people so it’s really fun to just meet
these people and then be able to say hey
I interviewed them when I hear their
song on the radio now just to give you
the flip side one of the reasons why we
don’t do those videos as often is or
anymore it’s because you know we used to
hear from you early on and it took us
six seven years to reach 100,000 subs
and then we grew in one year from
100,000 subs to a million and in the
last six eight months we’ve gone from 1
million subs to almost 5 million
subscribers and the reason was you guys
would say listen we don’t know what to
get your videos are interesting but one
day you’re doing a cooking show the next
day it’s a travel video and the day
after it’s a music video it’s confusing
so we just decided to make a bet on top
10 lists largely versus origins on pop
culture topics and and it’s paid off so
before we wrap up just a couple of
housekeeping items one is we take great
pride in doing you know have you metal
videos country videos techno videos rap
videos if you see a video you don’t like
make sure you want to click on it to
learn and maybe you know discover a new
genre that’s great you could also then
use the suggestion tool and even email
us to say listen why are you doing so
many lists on this why don’t you do more
on something
but what we don’t want you guys to do is
go on those comment sections and just
start using profanity and insulting one
another I think for us we’ve always said
watch mortals kind of like a restaurant

but if you start to disrespect someone
else and use profanity we’ll throw you
