actress and former model mia farrow is
now a well-known activist and UNICEF
Goodwill Ambassador one of her most
urgent causes is helping the people in
the Darfur region of Sudan hi I’m
Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today faroe discusses
this conflict this is not a war this is
an attack upon a defenseless population
to characterize what is happening in
Darfur as as war is is really a misnomer
that implies two armed groups with a
dispute most of the suffering and death
is against defenseless civilians women
and children the ICC has issued an
arrest warrant for Omar al-bashir they
stopped short of accusing him of
genocide but the accusation doesn’t mean
we can go and get him it is disgusting
to see the red carpet treatment that
he’s been getting in the various
countries that he’s visited since the
indictment Pharaoh has visited Darfur
numerous times but understands that not
everyone has that opportunity so how can
we help I was part of a generation that
stopped a war in Vietnam because we
considered it to be unjust and I think
it was all those voices people saying no
this is not acceptable I’ll give you a
story by the late Senator Paul Simon of
the Rwandan genocide Paul Simon said if
just a hundred people had phoned in from
each district the US would have taken
action to have stopped the genocide
we’re not government officials here so
I’m not sure how they do it do they
impose a no-fly zone why not do they try
everything to persuade cartoon to
readmit those aid workers are they
trying their best if not can they work
with those countries friendly to Sudan
to persuade them to admit some kind of
aid workers to fill that gap I don’t
know but that’s up to the government but
just say you’ve got to do something call
one eight hundred genocide and that will
put you in touch with elected officials
or the White House during her trips to
Sudan Pharaoh documented the tragedies
to paint a clear picture for us these
pictures are not easy to see but she
says they’re worth more than words I
took this in 2004 an older woman going
to get the firewood sorghum requires
more than two hours cooking on an open
fire and so firewood has become crucial
now the deforestation around the camp
exceeded 10 miles this means women who
leave the camps are exposed to attacks
torture rape especially I talked to one
aid worker who said that he felt that
all females over the age of eight a
hundred percent had been raped in the
camp that he was working of course the
government denies it women told me their
breasts were burned and they couldn’t
feed their children feeding centers were
I saw these children they have shut down
so there is no way to keep these
children alive these children’s drawings
her given to me by kids in the camps and
I collected over the years they
described very well the porosity of the
tax in 2003 and 2000 for a little girl
drew herself running her mother cooking
breakfast I was the last she saw of her
mother there’s a pregnant woman an
attack helicopter bombing at complicated
drawing actually of a rape back in 2004
again we need protection I don’t think
there can be a more visceral plea from
the human heart than protect us we’re
not safe save us I think this is our
defining moment for us do we care and
are we galvanized and are we going to
push our leadership or are we going to
turn away it defines us and it’s of
course a seminal moment for the people
of Darfur whether or not they’re going
to starve to death so there’s never been
a more appropriate moment for us to
holler and scream that this is not
acceptable to sit around and watch over
a million people die of starvation and
thirst
Oh
