When Action Heroes Go Soft

they’ve entertained us with over-the-top
action and violence but for some reason
they have decided to star in
family-friendly kids movies welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’ll be taking
a look at what happens when a Hollywood
action star gets domesticated
Hollywood is full of action stars who
maximize their skill set by blasting
away bad guys one of the film industry’s
more disturbing trends is when these
action heroes find themselves on the
losing end of temptation to gain wider
box office appeal and they have proven
time and time again that they aren’t
beneath embarrassing themselves in
devilishly elaborate ways perhaps the
earliest example of this phenomenon is
the 1978 action film every which way but
loose this film took the hard-nosed
Clint Eastwood and partnered him with an
orangutan named Clyde while not marketed
as a kid’s film per se it did reach a
wide crowd especially since it perfectly
mixed Eastwood’s gruffness with a new
sense of lightheartedness by despite
this early success it wasn’t until ivan
reitman x’ offbeat comedy Kindergarten
Cop that this genre shift was seen as a
genuine career boosting technique as a
pissed-off detective named John Kimble
Arnold Schwarzenegger went undercover as
a kindergarten teacher in order to get a
drug dealers wife to testify
surprisingly the film drew in over 200
million dollars
despite its shoestring budget
unfortunately Arnie’s decision to go
full circle and give birth in jr.
succeeded in putting off even his most
devout fans undisguised
he later exploited the holiday spirit in
jingle all the way
as a father going to great lengths to
buy his son a popular toy I’m not a
pervert I just was looking for trouble
and all by this time the floodgates had
opened and a vast array of action stars
had chosen to enter the family-friendly
arena
these included professional wrestler
Hulk Hogan who starred in not one but
several kid-friendly flicks among his
many attempts to redefine himself as a
hero for the family where 1991’s
suburban commando and 1993’s mr. nanny
in which he was a bodyguard to a CEOs
children if that film proved anything
it’s that not even a wrestler could pull
off wearing ballerina tights may I offer
you tea
perhaps watercress sandwich knock it off
yeah meanwhile Joe Pesci was an actor
whose claim to fame was brutally
murdering people in Scorsese films he
changed this by playing an inept burglar
in not one but two home alone films
what’s even more unbelievable is that he
handled the slapstick with dignity you
guys give up oh yeah thirsty for more
sadly the same cannot be said for
martial arts legend Chuck Norris he
decided to match his tough-guy persona
with a shaggy dog in the disney canine
buddy cop comedy top dog it’s hot enough
that the bad guys in the movie were
white supremacists but what’s up with
the film’s posters if you thought Norris
was the only martial artist seduced by
the genre think again over a decade
later Jackie Chan got sucked into
starring in the babysitter with a twist
situational comedy The Spy Next Door
this set off a string of several similar
attempts however if one action star
could be said to have inherited the
genre it’s Dwayne the rock Johnson once
thought to be the man destined to own
the action genre
Duane has instead chosen to kiss Steve
Carrell and get smart perform ballet in
the game plan drive alien kids around
and race to Witch Mountain and take the
genre to the next level
by becoming the tooth fairy is it pure
boredom of firing heavy artillery and
spouting kick-ass one-liners over and
over again or is this phenomenon proof
that tough guys are sensitive and want
to appeal to more than their usual
all-male demographic
