What Bo Jackson Never Was Never Injured? – Future Considerations

welcome everybody to the first official
episode of future considerations hope
you enjoyed our pilot
sorry malcolm gladwell about the name of
future considerations is the name we’re
going to be using here on out my name is
julian i’m with ash this week if you’re
not familiar with what we do here we
basically debate what-if scenarios in
the world of sports what if this move
happened what if this player got traded
what if this player got injured and for
this week’s episode we are going to be
talking about bo Jackson what if bo
Jackson never got into we know him as
the to sport legend that we know him to
be playing baseball and football but
what if he never suffered the injury
playing football which cut both of those
careers to a halt let’s start off with
this question would bo Jackson be the
greatest athlete of each 20th century
well he was actually three stor it’s not
quite Jim Thorpe level but he actually
was also a star in track and field
there’s no sure he was not you know
there was no money he thought in track
and field so it’s a sport his family
smart guy decided to pursue baseball and
football look he’s the only guy who’s
been an all-star in baseball and
football uh but at the same time I think
the the challenge with bo Jackson really
was that he actually wasn’t it was
impossible for him to play both sports
so in some ways he was kind of
shortchanging you know one or both of
those careers he would basically play
football throughout the year sorry he
would play baseball the whole year and
then he would show up like week eight of
the NFL season so in some ways while I
think he was a supreme athlete and
there’s no doubts about the fact that on
any given day he was probably the best
athlete on the field when you look at
the totality of either season I just
feel like there was always a handful or
even dozen better players in each sport
and even at their position again in a
given play he could run over anybody as
a running back and as an outfield that
her hitter he could probably do better
than most players but over the totality
of the season no I don’t think he would
have gone down as the greatest athlete
because the greatest
athlete is not just a greatest athlete
on a play unfortunately you have to look
at seasons and careers and I think you
kind of a short change myself in that so
so I’ll say this while I agree with you
in the fact that you may never be
wouldn’t as be seen as the greatest
athlete I think a lot of people would
have recognized Jim Thorpe I think Bob
Jackson would have been recognized as
the most exciting athlete of the 20th
century and because of the fact that we
were able to see his exploits on TV well
the people in 20th century able to see
his exploits on TV the Bono’s ads with
Nike and the fact that there seemed to
have been this kind of godlike mythical
sense about him there are all these
legends like like from the 34:30 about
him about how when he was like an
eight-year-old or an eighth grade he
just dumped a stick and everyone was
amazed about how we dunked the stick or
how he took this rock and killed this
ministers Pig in his area there’s a
whole bunch of crazy stories about Bo
Jackson that kind of make him into this
godlike figure and then to see him go on
the football field and run people over
while as a member of the Oakland Raiders
and and and to see him kill it as a
baseball player
there’s something about Bo Jackson that
kind of endeared a whole generation of
kids around him as here’s the throw guy
a go
[Applause]
not to get all semantics I don’t think
it was the most exciting player because
very respectfully to Bo Jackson even as
runningback Barry Sanders was more
exciting you know and there’s more out
exciting outfielders and I think he was
probably the most impressive athlete I
think he was just fundamentally this
beast this thing out of the ordinary
that could again like he could topple a
linebacker into the end zone as he did
Brian Bosworth but he could also catch a
field a ball yeah and then run over like
the fence and come down and he’ll break
a brand on it so yes he was the most
impressive athlete but in any case I
think yeah I mean there’s no doubt that
he was this out-of-this-world figure but
I remember a great figure in many ways
yes absolutely but remember if he was
healthy completely different story let’s
go to question number two would it be a
better baseball player or a better
football player personally I think
football player he had the pedigree
going in from college a Heisman Trophy
winner a number one draft pick by the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 86 going down is
one of the greatest college players ever
then obviously coming in to the league
with that high status and then obviously
killing it with the Oakland Raiders I
don’t know I think within the 91 yard
run running into the running through the
tunnel running over Brian Bosworth also
there’s no baseball game with bo Jackson
but there is Tecmo Bowl player in Tecmo
Bowl bo Jackson so let’s start playing
on the Raiders on bo Jackson so I think
Bo Jackson with a full career already
with a full career he would be a better
football player in the baseball okay
partly has this contemporary and another
player who did the two sports Deion
Sanders it’s hard to talk about bo
Jackson without referencing Theon’s head
what about D on prime time would say
that football was his wife baseball was
his mistress I actually think that with
Bo Jackson was the opposite I think
baseball partly maybe because there was
safer maybe more versatility you could
play defense and offense I think I think
if you look at it he was a great running
back but again showing up at on week
eight you have to take that into
consideration I think setting aside his
college career where yeah he was Heisman
he was like the crazy
he had a far better college career as a
football player but if you ask me about
the pros I think baseball was probably
where he was a better player so that’s
the caveat if you look at the pros only
very quickly
who
better between the two Deion Sanders or
bo Jackson well look I think Dianna had
a better career in terms of team
accolades I think he won the Super Bowl
and the World Series he was the only
player to do both he did a TD and a home
run in the same week but I think on any
given day even Sanders would admit that
in the Sugar Bowl bo Jackson kind of
toppled Sanders and when they played
against each other
Sanders who is always not the most
modest of guys unlike Bo Jackson round
of time my final comment is he Sanders
stated on the record that he goes Bo
Jackson was one of the best athletes to
Don a uniform so I think if you look at
just strictly the player
bo Jackson know that okay so I’ll say
this much even though the time is out
here Deon statistically probably the
better player but bo Jackson I think if
I was alive in the 80s I’d be wearing
Bono’s clothes and I’d be a big fan of
bo Jackson but to be fair the reason
though the careers were better was the
injury which I think was a tragedy I
mean both still around with us
thankfully but that’s the tragic figure
that was bo Jackson getting eliminated
from disqualified from his last year in
Auburn in baseball because the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers visited him and essentially
allegedly lied to him and then the
injury which was a kind of normal play
that he was so strong as he carried I
think it was a safety or a corner he
kind of dislocate it just tragic figure
but ultimately I think you’re right
about that assessment Ashe always a
pleasure to talk these sports topics
with you whether on camera or off camera
if you have any suggestions for topics
we should discuss on this show please
leave them in the comments we may even
take one for a future episode for Ashe
