rock journalist and biographer Sylvie
Simmons tells us five things you should
know about the life of Leonard Cohen is
a very serious writer and a very serious
musician and the interesting thing is to
him they’re both the same there’s no
difference between music really careful
music
Leonard Cohen before he became the
person who wrote Suzanne and Alleluia
and some musicians so many know as a
poet must considered the Golden Boy of
Canada in fact we had a documentary made
about him way before he was signed to a
record deal called ladies and gentlemen
mr. Leonard Cohen and his moving some
music didn’t happen and so on his first
album which was at the end of 1967
beginning of 1968 and so he came into
music very late in life for the sixties
back then if you were over 30 everybody
said don’t trust anyone over 30
then it was 33 when he made his first
album Leonard had many beautiful lovers
and many of them have been preserved in
songs some of the most famous a Suzanne
a Montreal woman she was not the Suzanne
that Leonard had two children with just
happened to be a coincidence of names
also Mary Ann who was not very
unfaithful but Mary Ann Gilligan a
beautiful Norwegian model still alive I
love it when you call it like that I
believe that I’m going to meet my love
it’s going to be some girl who calls out
even later in life he was engaged to
Rebecca De Mornay the actress who was in
had to rock the cradle and she was given
an executive producer credit on an album
and a whole album was dedicated to her
yes Jesus was a sailor
when he walked upon the water and a 12
color called I am a Jew and he wrote
that poem in response to a lot of
assumptions people made after he became
an ordained Buddhist monk but he had
changed religion as he said that isn’t
religion it’s a discipline there’s no
God involved and so he’s been a real
seeker spiritual seeker all his life
they’re still at you and a practicing
Jew he sought many different paths back
in 1968 he was for approximately a year
a Scientologist and those who love his
music will know the song famous blue
raincoat with a line
did you ever go clear which was a what
you do in Scientology did you ever go
clear
and yes you did go clear in his archives
our founder a certificate he is an
operating feet and I believe the term is
he and Tom Cruise could give themselves
the the handshake but he got out of the
religion very early on it was something
he thought had as he put it good data it
was very good for dealing with people
who were troubled in their soul but he
got out as soon as I realized what they
were about
Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen had a
conversation at a cafe in Paris I wish
I’d been there to eavesdrop on but then
had reported it to me he said Dylan came
to him and said hey that song Alleluia
you wrote you know it’s more like a
prayer than a song he said hey how long
did it take me to write them and Lenna
said about two years he said I was too
embarrassed to tell him it was five six
maybe seven years and he are still and
how long it took him to write a
particular single he drew it and then he
said fifteen minutes in the back of the
cab but Alleluia is kind of a bit of an
all-purpose him for for our age and also
an instruction in how to write songs it
goes like this lithography
well I know that there were endless
verses to that song and so it has so
many different moods and styles to it
you know you can do different
adaptations myths of different versions
have it either happy ending or the cold
and broken hallelujah
300 people have covered it at last count
even Leonard wanted a moratorium on the
song I think after it became used in a
sex scene in the Watchmen a film about
superheroes
some kind of 50 large snow I guess one
of the strands of the DNA have landed
and what I found out is that all of
these strands really all fed into each
other and if you took one part of it
away the whole system would collapse and
who wouldn’t be Leonard was this this
depression that he suffered pretty much
from his late teens early twenties on it
seemed to be something that he inherited
rather than from anything that came
about in his life his mother had been
hospitalized at one point with
depression and so he was fighting in his
whole life it was very serious from how
he described it that it wasn’t the glue
as he said is you wake up every morning
is how the hell do I get for this day
and so a lot of things that were the
engine of his work and the way he did
often had a lot to do with trying to
beat this particular problem that he was
born with but finally through his life
mostly through discipline and a lot of
these spiritual pursuits were not to
find another God or another culture they
were to find a discipline in which he
could make sense and get through pretty
much the pain that he had to go through
of his depression
depression implies depth and I think
that would Leonard what came out of it
was not so much that dark lost you know
blank quality but that there was some
real profundity in his work
