he’s open for Usher and jay-z and his
career is definitely on the upswing hi
I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com our host Malik she got the
chance to chat with trey songz about his
R&B style and his evolution as an artist
she
the girls
let’s talk about you as an artist and
elevate your career to where it is now
when your first commercial released
album was in 2005 and today in 2010 you
know I mean you’re a big artist how do
you how would you describe your
elevation as an artist for every album
was bigger than the last it’s very much
appreciated the the way that I’ve grown
with every step I learned more about the
business from being a start to dealing
with celebrity status dealing with money
dealing with the business versus blowing
up instantaneously and not being as good
of a performer as good of a record a
song writer not knowing how to handle
money and not knowing how to associate
myself with certain people how to handle
myself insert meeting it was definitely
guys playing for me to escalate the way
I did the way no fake maybe we if you
look over the last ten years even 2005
when you jumped your first album I feel
there’s less and less R&B soul artists
in an age where it’s very electro is
very polished how do you maintain your
status times as RB so far but never
folded but never control in my body to
that of what people think music should
be and it’s sad because new artists as
they come Nate they have to kind of do
what the world wants to do what the
labels want them to do it’s kind of like
when jay-z wanted to death of autotune
you know because he wanted hip-hop to
remain hip-hop you didn’t want the
culture to die because you needed to
have a puddle tune to be on the radio
it’s almost like now you have to have a
pop record to be played on the radio to
be a popular eyes and that’s one thing I
love is well about my success and the
growth of it because I had the time to
continue to keep steady with the rmv
which soulful music and find my niche
and I you know while everybody else is
trying to fit in I want to stay
doubt
hey no telling
and we could
it’s called the music business and a lot
of artists only focus on the music what
I’ve seen that you focus on your
business and I know you have a great
ship with your management team tell us
the importance of focusing on your
branding and your business it’s selling
a product whether you want to believe it
or not if your artist you’re selling
product and that product is you going
through the things I went through in my
rise to success the potholes I’ve hit
you know when I go back down that same
street I know to turn when I get that
you know I know what relationships are
about I know what to take person or what
not and it’s all about who you align
yourself with and how you see your
future you know the compromises you’re
willing to make any things you’re
willing to stand up for and I think
we’re doing everything right right now
and there’s still more work to be done
