Top 10 YouTube Movie Critics – TopX Ep. 1

hey it’s Dan and welcome to
watchmojo.com and I’d like to welcome
you to the very first episode of top X
where we countdown the very best that
YouTube has to offer we’re starting the
show off with a doozy as we’re counting
down the top 10 YouTube movie critics
here on top acts as I mentioned before
we countdown YouTube channels that cover
a variety of topics this week we’re
doing movie critics and viewers while
many of these channels feature what you
might consider standard reviews we’ve
expanded our definition to include large
scale podcasts and non traditional
experimental forms of reviews
we’re not ranking these guys and gals
based on how many subscribers they get
but rather on a mix of their style
popularity votes from our users and
overall impact on the YouTube community
lastly a lot of people who do movie
reviews also have channels that are
mostly focused on let’s play or video
game content so if you’re wondering
where all they ended up you’ll have to
tune in next week number 10 mr. Sunday
movies now right off the bat mr. Sunday
movies lets you know that he knows a lot
about movies he knows his stuff
he gives you a lot of context for his
reviews a lot of background on the on
the movie or the series or whatever
shows that he really knows his source
material for instance for his gone girl
review he references a lot of Fincher’s
work for the new Transformers movie age
of extinction he references the other
movies like he talks about how the
stupid humor from the second one isn’t
present in this one he lets you know
that he he’s done his homework he’s seen
a lot of movies he’s not just some noob
so to speak gana Shia LeBouf tad
Hamilton Megan Fox and blonde Megan Fox
and in a Mark Wahlberg another guy and
this girl now that being said nerd
culture is definitely his forte if you
take a quick look at his page it’s
mostly sci-fi and superhero stuff that’s
not a bad thing but if you’re not into
it you’re not into it
the upshot to that is that he does a lot
of different stuff he does countdowns
aside from the actual reviews of course
speculative things like who’s gonna be
in the next Marvel movie he’ll do vs
battles I think as far as the style of
this video goes it’s not what I would
call the most high production value but
it is very redundant every time he
references something he shows you
exactly that so there’s never any
confusion as to what he’s talking about
when he talks about saying his age of
extinction review he says the new Shia
LaBeouf and he’ll show you the actor
he’s talking about you don’t have to
speculate or anything like that
also he’s content is all 1080p and very
tightly edited so it’s a nice little
package number 9 red letter media
created way back in 2004 red letter
media was
the creation of Mike’s kalasa and Jay
Bauman which was not exactly a YouTube
channel but more of a film and
production company now these guys rose
to attention when they released a
seven-part review of The Phantom Menace
that is Star Wars for those of you who
don’t know in this still classic
showcased what is now famous his
monotone speaking voice nothing in the
Phantom Menace makes any sense at all
comes off like a script written by an
eight-year-old
what’s also notable about this is it’s a
seven part series each that’s ten
minutes long so it rivals it’s about
half the runtime of the actual movie
it’s an extensive review aside from that
the bulk of their content like their
half in the bag show are sort of
roundtable discussions with beer it’s
usually two or more people with a couple
of beers just talking about a movie now
if you’re an aficionado of really crappy
movies they have a best of the worst
series which is exactly what it sounds
like they talk about the best of the
worst movies out there remember at the
end when the trolls about to rape the
girl and then he sees the bug Christmas
I’d say red letter media is good for
people who like to hear discussions on
their movies it’s more of a podcast kind
of thing where if you like instead of
just like is it good is it bad if you’d
like to have a number of personalities
talking about the movie in different
ways these are the guys for you number
eight
schmooze know next up are the guys with
the credentials now schmoes know are
actually the first YouTube channel to be
certified by Rotten Tomatoes and they’re
also the official reviewers for movies
calm and the Heidi and Frank radio
station now being reviewers with such
credentials their reviews are a lot more
traditional they offer a rating out of
five I think it’s like three out of five
schmoes and they also have a policy that
they never reveal spoilers in their
reviews something that we’re also quite
guilty of here at WatchMojo despite
their relative fame they’re actually
probably the channel with some of the
most engagement with their fans they
have a weekly podcast where they
interact with people on Twitter and
Facebook the podcast is also super high
production value they have full studio
proper lighting and camera work
celebrity guests the whole nine yards
when you couple that with how in tune
they are with their audience it makes
for a very rewarding channel to follow
number seven screen junkies
now these guys are actually the most
subscribed channel on our list even
though by YouTube’s standards they’re
pretty young having only been around
since 2011 their channel is split up
into essentially two kinds of videos the
first kind is what we would call more
traditional discussions podcasts that
sort of thing now the second half of
their channel is probably what you’ve
known them for whether you know it or
not they have these things called honest
trailers which are essentially what they
call an honest trailer of a movie where
a very gruff sounding narrator is
essentially pointing out the gimmicks
the quips the silly things the
shortcomings of the movie from the
studio that finally learned how to make
Pixar movies and the songwriting duo
behind hasa diga a boy comes the
feature-length music video for let it go
close it these are very satisfying for
people who have actually seen the movie
already and are looking for someone to
sort of make light of it or to point out
the things that you’ve noticed in it now
these essentially serve as more of a
de-facto review they’re not exactly
whether you should see it or not is it
good or bad you have to sort of gather
from what they’ve interjected what their
opinion of the movie is now I realize
that these aren’t exactly what you would
call a traditional review it actually
helps to have already seen the movie
that said it’s also they’re also
extremely satisfying if you’ve seen the
movie or even if you’re just interested
in it or if you already dismissed the
movie is something you don’t want to see
it’s great because you really feel on
the inside of a pretty funny joke number
six the flick pic so the man behind this
channel is Jon flick sir I’d really like
to believe that’s his real name anyway
the channel is mostly him talking and
it’s all him the whole thing is his
personality him talking in the screen in
a very traditional straight at the
camera kind of wet although pretty much
all of YouTube hinges on personality the
flick pick really depends on John’s
style now he’s very enthusiastic he
makes a lot of crazy gestures he loud he
shouts so your enjoyment of his channel
definitely hinges on whether or not you
like his style but he’s got those baby
blue eyes that are really easy to get
lost in so that shouldn’t be a problem
while his style may seem very simple at
first you know it’s just mostly just him
talking in front of the camera he’s
clearly got the attention of the right
people he’s
on his show he’s got interviews with Ali
Larter and Sean Bean I looked for others
that couldn’t find any but there’s
clearly more to come and so he’s
definitely doing something right number
five
Chris Stockman on paper the stuck man is
actually very similar to John Flixter
it’s his reviews are straight-up just
him talking in front of the camera
talking about the movie his reviews I’d
say hinge less on his personality that’s
not to say he doesn’t have a personality
it’s just that there was less voices
less crazy hand gestures less outbursts
his um his reviews carry a much what I’d
call a more serious tone than a lot of
the other straight at the camera Talking
Heads reviews now I am a big fan of the
first Sin City I thought it was a very
visually interesting film with a lot of
really cool stories as well now that’s
not to say he doesn’t have fun his
hilarious ad reviews are reviews
completely devoted to terrible movies
now these reviews are thorough for
instance his review of Shaquille
O’Neal’s movie steal is 24 minutes long
it goes in-depth just how bad this movie
is shot for shot it’s actually in these
hilarious ‘ti reviews that I find his
tone really shines the sort of dry non
monotone as I said but the the more
serious tone that he has definitely
sells the the crappiness of the movies
even more and makes it funnier to just
point out how terrible their number for
your movie sucks so judging by the name
of the channel and the picture you might
be quick to brush off the host atom as
just an angry troll I mean with the name
like your movie sucks you’d think all he
does is rip on films oh my god is that
how people run in the future it looks
like it’s just Jada this isn’t a rescue
that oh my god your accents weird too
that run though that’s not to say he
doesn’t rip on the occasional movie but
there’s a lot of depth and context to
his analysis for instance in his gone
girl review he mentions that Fincher
made his actors text now this shows a
keen attention to detail as a viewer and
a deep understanding of the moviemaking
process all this analysis is actually
very nicely packaged while other
channels focus mostly on the
personalities of their hosts while Adam
does have a personality that shines
through the bulk of the jokes are
delivered in the editing there’s a lot
of smash cuts and sound bites that
really sell all the jokes and make the
videos very punchy and fun to watch
number three cinemasins these guys are
famous for their everything wrong with
blank videos which much like the honest
trailers serve a sort of de facto
reviews where you kind of point out the
problems and sort of gathered for
yourself what whether the movie is good
or not
while it may it first seemed like just a
laundry list of everything wrong with a
movie the mix of sarcasm and wit
actually serves as a pretty good crash
course in movie literacy as they often
point out problems with continuity plot
character motivation things that a lot
of people may not be up to snuff on I’m
not sure now all this space debris
avoids the escape pod but apparently it
has the same aim as bad guys in movies
if you’re looking for more standard
reviews they also do those as well they
cover pretty much all the major
blockbusters so if you’re a fan of their
everything wrong with videos you’d be
wise to check out the reviews as well
because you can be sure that they’re
reviewing the movies with the same sort
of scrutiny that they apply to these
everything wrong with lists number two a
nostalgia critic and the League of super
critics the nostalgia critic is actually
Doug Walker aka the guy with the glasses
and his channel the League of super
critics now includes a nostalgia chick
Todd in the shadows and cinema snob
all of whom deal with their own specific
style of reviews as his name implies the
nostalgia critic deals with older movies
generally he or rather his on-screen
persona has a very distinct look his
glasses t-shirt and tie combo and hat
are all essential symbols of the channel
itself his slogan being I remember it so
you don’t have to hello I’m the
Nostalgia Critic
guy I remember it so if you don’t have
to we talked a lot about eccentric
personalities and nostalgia critic may
take the crown from all of them his
videos also feature a lot of inside
jokes there’s an elephant that will
appear when someone skips over a touchy
subject also he has a thing only Chuck
Norris could do that when someone
attempts the impossible Lord nothing can
stop this killing machine well except
maybe one Chuck Norris so while his
style might not be the best for those of
you who don’t enjoy loud noises the
inside jokes and the dependable lunacy
of the channel make it very rewarding
for those who watch it for a while 10 is
way too small a number to list all the
critics on YouTube and there were a lot
that unfortunately couldn’t make this
list so here are a few honorable men
that just didn’t make the cut to date
x-men The Last Stand is still the
highest-grossing film in the franchise
both stateside and worldwide I know when
you review spider-man 2 when you view
the basis Batman – it’s on blu-rays on
Digital Copy and I watched it on a plane
when we came out of the screening people
are having an awful lot of argument
about how the thing matches up and as
Ridley Scott said there it’s it suggests
towards alien but we’re not there yet at
least two more we are at least two
movies away Superman the movie was
released across the United States and
most parts of the world on the 15th of
December 1978 and was a huge success for
Warner Brothers is it I heard that there
were there were stories that we’re gonna
change the ending some people have read
the book will be in surprise and
everyone who walked out said that’s the
same I’m doing it’s the book number one
Jeremy Jones despite being the top
reviewer on our list Jeremy Jones is
actually the most restrained and
controlled just kidding he’s nuts from
the opening shot I was like alright this
CGI is terrible maybe it’ll get better
not the CGI is completely horrible a
couple of scenes looked like it had sets
which that was cool
he speaks fast and his editing style
even cuts out all the breaths meaning
his videos are very fast very punchy
very in-your-face what’s interesting
about John’s is reviews is that you
always know what you’re getting
they’re very polished and very clean
even though the production value doesn’t
seem very high it’s generally just a
talking head in front of a red
background because it’s so simple and
clean it makes it look like the
production value is actually probably
much higher than it is this cleaner
style carries over into the length as
well his reviews are actually very short
other guys on our list have discussions
that range from twenty to thirty minutes
for a single review well there is a
place for that
what’s good about Jeremy’s reviews is
that you always know what you’re getting
they’re always done in about five
minutes usually closer to three all this
makes for a very tight and consistent
package great for binge watching well
that’s it for our very first episode of
topics we are always open to feedback so
please let us know in the comments if
there’s something else you’d like to see
in the show and
next time
