Top 10 Times Advertisers Bailed

[Music]
sometimes we come to regret our
decisions and these companies sure did
Halleck said last week that phelps his
recent behavior was not consistent with
that image welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’re counting down our picks for
the top 10 times advertisers bailed with
the police on her tail kate fled to
france and the modeling contracts with
the likes of H&M Chanel and Burberry
dropped like flies for this list we’re
looking at situations where advertisers
pulled ads from television programs or
sponsors abandoned spokespeople due to a
scandal or controversy I always wanted
to be after it was over just live a
normal life anyway
number 10 Paula Deen and casual racism
words are so powerful they can hurt they
can make people happy in 2013 it came to
light that celebrity chef Paula Deen had
casually made use of racial epithets
including but not limited to the n-word
under him she was asked have you ever
used the n-word yourself yes of course
things just got worse from there for the
Georgia native when it was also alleged
that she considered a wedding for her
brother with exclusively black waiters
and also commonly made sexist jokes in
response companies like Walmart Target
QVC and Sears pulled ads and she was
dropped entirely from the Food Network
so I’ll ask it to you bluntly are you a
racist no no I’m not by birth by choice
by osmosis you don’t feel you have
racist tendencies no did she learn her
lesson well two years later a photo
surfaced of her in a costume with her
son in brown face yes
number nine Magic Johnson and HIV I was
just devastated talk about rubbing salt
into a wound it was a pretty big deal in
the 90s when Los Angeles Laker Magic
Johnson revealed to the public that he
had contracted HIV because of the HIV
virus that I have attained uh I will
have to retire from the Lakers today
rumors ensued that he was gay or
bisexual though he denied both claims
though many saw his announcement as
heroic various sponsors including Pepsi
and Nestle dropped him as a spokesperson
things ultimately worked out for him
though as he was praised for his bravery
was called a hero by George HW Bush and
even returned to basketball as a coach
and player here comes battle he’s gone
Magic gone number eight Kate Moss and
the cocaine scandal Swedish fashion
retailer H&M dropped this English model
after photographs surfaced of her using
cocaine in 2005 British tabloid The
Daily Mirror published an expose
featuring one of the photos and dubbed
her cocaine Kate Chanel also decided not
to renew her contract though they said
it had nothing to do with the scandal
while Burberry dropped their current
campaign with the model designer
Alexander McQueen showed his support for
Moss by wearing a shirt reading we love
you Kate Moss’s career survived the
controversy as she was able to continue
modeling after British police dropped
the charges against her from avant-garde
to the classics she stands for luxury
and for punk number 7 Michael Phelps and
bond gate with every mistake that you
make you obviously have to pay for the
consequences that come your way when
photos of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps
allegedly smoking marijuana out of a
bong at a party came to light a year
after he made headlines with his sports
achievements he faced huge backlash
including the loss of Kellogg’s as a
sponsor Wolff it’s been a week since
Kellogg’s announced they’d be no more of
this on their cereal boxes and since
then groups and sites like this one have
been springing up online
additionally US
a swimming the governing body for
American competitive swimming suspended
the world record holder for three months
what were you thinking obviously not
much and you know it’s I mean like I
said a bad judgment he later announced
that he no longer used drugs and was
still allowed to compete in the 2012
Summer Olympics where he won another
four gold medals bringing his gold medal
total to 18 he’s the best I’ve ever seen
and maybe the best ever in terms of
visualization he will see it exactly the
perfect race number six Madonna and the
like a prayer music video no stranger to
controversy
Madonna’s 1989 music video for Like a
Prayer proved to be the start of another
big one for the Queen of Pop many
religious groups protested the music
video for its use of racial and sexual
themes alongside Christian imagery in
fact the Pope himself encouraged
Catholics to boycott her Italian
concerts
[Music]
after pressure from protesters Pepsi
eventually caved in to their demands and
stopped airing an ad that featured the
song
Make A Wish the corporation was so eager
to distance themselves from the video
that they let Madonna keep her five
million dollar advance
number five Three’s Company and sexual
content come a knock on our door waiting
for you
[Music]
premiering in 1977 Three’s Company was a
sitcom that involved two females who
lived with a male who pretended to be
gay to make their living situation
acceptable to their landlord me move in
here with you – are you serious yeah of
course
you’ll have to share everything some
accused the show of being too racy which
caused Sears to withdraw ads and
encourage other companies to do the same
there were the second look at Sears
where America shops for value the
decision was criticized by many in the
industry claiming it was wrong for Sears
to spread their opinion of what should
and shouldn’t be on TV the TV series
would last for eight seasons and even
won two Golden Globes and an Emmy wee
baby doll
[Applause]
number four the World Wrestling
Federation and the raunch factor
exchanging words in the spinor of the
Ring once good friends but this time
businesses got in the way in 1999 the
World Wrestling Federation now known as
World Wrestling Entertainment or the WWE
ran into some trouble with advertisers
coke Wrigley and the US Army either
ended sponsorship deals or pulled ads
from the controversial Smackdown program
due to its language violence and sexual
content in response the entertainment
company agreed to tone down some of the
show’s material and the sports series is
still currently running number 3 19 Kids
and Counting and the molestation scandal
in a statement on the Duggar family
website Josh calls himself the biggest
hypocrite ever saying while espousing
faith and family values I have been
unfaithful to my wife the most recent
scandal on our list involves Josh Duggar
the eldest son of the titular 19 Kids
and Counting on TLC and the revelation
that when he was between 14 and 15 years
old he inappropriately touched five
girls including four of his sisters a
police report says josh was given a very
stern talk by the officer but no charges
were filed when this became public TLC
pulled reruns of the show and over 20
advertisers including Walgreens Pizza
Hut and Crayola dropped their ads from
the reality TV series after a few months
of deliberation the show was ultimately
cancelled and that resulted in an
estimated 25 million dollar loss to the
network kept trying to help them along
and then I would find that they were
just basically you know relying on me
completely number two Tiger Woods and
the infidelity scandal I am also aware
of the pain my behavior has caused to
those of you in this room I have let you
down
in 2009 professional golfer Tiger Woods
became the subject of much media
scrutiny
after reports of a car accident surfaced
during which his wife Elin Nordegren
helped him from his SUV soon enough the
bizarre story became a little clearer
when rumors of his alleged infidelity z’
emerged over the course of a few months
many companies dropped sponsorship and
advertising deals including gatorade
Gillette AT&T and General Motors the
total shareholder loss from woods affair
scandal is estimated to be between five
and twelve billion dollars the couple
divorced in 2010 and woods career has
not been the same since of course it
hasn’t happened he’s gone oh for 2010
it’s been a terrible year before we
unveil our number one pick here are some
honorable mentions I was not talking
about her sooner so we were talking with
the Talent Competition and it got
misconstrued OJ Simpson’s eye he’s very
much a character out of Shakespeare play
here’s a man who had everything and lost
everything could it be the end of the
road for Lance Armstrong amid mounting
evidence of doping the sporting icons
lost Nike as a sponsor and others are
set to follow
number one Bill Maher and cowardly
America yes somebody called so we called
you directly and said and said you’re
fired
less than a week after the events of
September 11th 2001
Bill Maher made one of the most
controversial statements of his career
on his show politically incorrect
we have been the cowards lobbying cruise
missiles from 2,000 miles away that’s
cowardly like that is a staying in the
airplane when it hits the building
that’s say what you want about it not
powered when he called his own country
cowardly the backlash was huge and cost
the pundit various advertisers including
FedEx and Sears
despite issuing several apologies for
the statement the program never
recovered and was ultimately cancelled
in mid-2002 and mark credited its
ultimate demise to a struggle to find
advertisers in the aftermath of the
controversy he’s since begun an HBO
program called Real Time with Bill Maher
but in the end it seems politically
incorrect was destined to live up to its
name to ruin it do you agree with our
list as you know this this is our last
show of the season what do you think is
the biggest controversy surrounding
advertisers and sponsors I’ve had a lot
of time to think about what I’ve done
