Top 10 Television Sitcoms of the 1970s

this was the decade when sitcoms came of
age and became a tool for social
commentary welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’ll be counting down our picks
for the top ten sitcoms
of the 1970s are you crazy moving in
with two girls not my billing it I’ll be
strictly platonic well I don’t care what
it is what does that mean like you and
me Stanley
number ten Three’s Company
come and knock on our door waiting for
you kicking off our list is the show
that brought sex talk to the mainstream
by sharing an apartment Jack Chrissy and
Janet proved that women and men who need
just friends in between there was
physical comedy innuendo and double
entendre galore
oh yeah and Jack had to pretend to be
gay you enjoy being here you mean with
you
the show was silly beyond belief but it
was popular as hell the Frank seemed so
nice he said he wanted me for a friend
yeah and then the next night he brought
the friend number 9 the Brady Bunch the
Brady’s were one of TV’s most famous
families 60 sitcoms focused on the
nuclear family but the Brady’s extended
that vision to the blended family
solving family problems was the name of
the game and there were rarely huge
disagreements within the close-knit
group Masha I’m proud to be a sister and
then I have terrible you look Thanks
while the shoe didn’t have huge ratings
and wasn’t critically acclaimed it did
gain popularity in syndication and
continues to entertain audiences today
not a hair get closer I get any closer
we’ll both be more in the same pajamas
number 8 happy days
50s nostalgia was at an all-time high
when Richie Cunningham and Arthur
Fonzarelli rolled into town we need the
advice of a worldly person and you’re
the most worldly person around here not
the most work but I’m in the top two
Gary Marshall had several huge 70 shows
including Mork & Mindy Laverne and
Shirley and The Odd Couple but innocence
was at its peak on happy days a
middle-class American family everyday
teenager problems and a soda shop
lecture was simple in this world Plus
everybody wanted to be the Fonz
you stare at a chicken pretty soon bingo
works every time you got the town and I
got the tap number seven Sanford and Son
this show broke ground for
african-americans on TV while running
their junkyard widower Fred Sanford was
prone to get rich quick schemes and his
loyal son Lamont kept him out of trouble
there finally comes a time when you know
you ain’t gonna make it
what do you keep saying that boy but we
got 30 bucks between us and we got bills
here to total over $200 lingo making
witty and flat-out funny the show also
focused on political social and economic
problems but no matter what’s going on
fred was usually hoping to reunite with
his wife
you hear that Elizabeth I’m coming to
join you honey
number six The Odd Couple
based on a movie that was based on a
play this show brought together two
mismatched divorced men in the same
apartment
so of course hijinks ensue give it a
chance to settle it terrific once you
get used to it you gonna love it
it was unlike the decades other shows
and possibly because of that it did very
poorly in the ratings regardless Jack
Klugman Tony Randall and the series
itself were constantly nominated for
awards proving its timelessness and
humor cause calm empty full hot I don’t
get it number 5 the Bob Newhart show
in a precursor to the 80s and 90s
stand-up comedian Bob Newhart brought
his deadpan routine to TV with this
sitcom Thanksgivings next can I hate
that too well you will with that
attitude I’m not worried about my
attitude that’s your problem
as a psychologist he was the straight
man to some hilarious patients and
characters Newhart sitcom followed Mary
Tyler Moore’s formula by spotlighting a
group of young professionals and rarely
postulating on hot-button issues but
they also added some wackiness for good
measure I love kids
the way I figured Bob the kids of today
are the adults of tomorrow you’re
probably right number four taxi with an
ensemble cast that included Christopher
Lloyd Danny DeVito Andy Kaufman and more
this was one of TV’s most acclaimed
sitcoms winning 18 Emmys and four Golden
Globes over its run where do I read
playboy magazine oh yes I am studying
attendance I want to be upfront with you
I want to be an American fun guy taking
each day in high gear following a group
of New York cab drivers who don’t want
to be cab drivers taxi included its
share of dark comedy and like many 70s
sitcoms it also covered dramatic issues
before it was canceled twice sync is
having her monthly problem bills bill
number three The Mary Tyler Moore Show
we’ll make it
single self-sufficient and not searching
for a man Mary Richards became a symbol
for women’s liberation how old are you
30
no hedging no how old do I look why
hedge how old do I look instead of
focusing on her struggle to find love
the show concentrated on Mary’s
relationships with friends and
co-workers some of whom became so
beloved they earned spinoff series
societal issues were facts of life and
not causes to be championed and the show
was even able to find humor in death
chuckles the clown is dead it was a
freak accident
he went to the parade dressed as Peter
peanut and a rogue elephant tried to
shell him number to match set during the
Korean War as a commentary on the
Vietnam conflict mash evolved over its
run to be less comedic which is one
reason they struggled with using a laugh
track Jani poo its daddy no no no no no
no no no no I’m eating you up so there
isn’t too much time leave Melones eating
brains candor great writing and a
pitch-perfect cast gave this show a
loyal following won it awards and made
its finale the most-watched TV event in
history with 105 point 9 million
tuning in to say goodbye and everybody a
big pair of feed their cheesy mustache
I’ll think of you
whenever I smelled month-old Sox I’ll
think of you number one all in the
family lies my gosh we had it made
taking the top spot on our list is the
controversial norman lear show the
challenged bigotry discrimination and
the status quo Archie Bunker was a
symbol of bad middle-class attitudes and
political incorrectness but even so he
was a lovable curmudgeon and in the
Bible it says God made man in his own
image he made women after from a rib
cheaper cut number one for five years
the show won awards and had multiple
successful spin-offs but most
importantly it brought real life to the
sitcom format you don’t look like a
