excuse me that’s a bad oh he’s the one
that started the whole superhero trend
but how much do you really know about
him
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
counting down the top 10 facts about
Superman I want to know at all
everything Olsen I want to see photos of
him everywhere no I want the photos
number 10
he couldn’t always fly faster than a
speeding bullet more powerful than a
locomotive able to leap tall buildings
at a single bound when Superman first
onto the scene in 1938 Action Comics
number one he could do a lot of things
that no one else could although he could
leap 1/8 of a mile and jump over a
20-story building he couldn’t fly he
first started flying in the animated
cartoons of the 1940s because it was a
lot easier to animate the powers-that-be
at DC Comics saw the result and soon the
Man of Steel was regularly soaring in
the clouds and beyond to save the world
number nine Darth Vader trained Superman
when I left you I was but to learn no I
am the most okay so not literally
although we would love to see that
crossover on the big screen by the way I
mean David Prowse the actor who
physically portrayed the Sith Lord
helped the actor who played Superman on
the big screen Christopher Reeve to get
in shape when Reeve was hired for the
1978 movie the actor had a great look
and the right attitude but his body
didn’t have the mass that the character
needed enter Prowse who had just been
the physical vessel for James Earl Jones
his voice in Star Wars the bodybuilder
and trainer helped treif pack on thirty
pounds of muscle so he could
appropriately fill out soups his costume
number eight some people believe in a
Superman curse here in his home on
Benedict Canyon on June 16 1959 George
Reeves died of a gunshot wound is being
in a Superman movie or a TV project a
curse probably not but it does sort of
feel like it beginning with George
Reeves star of the 1950 Superman TV
series whose mysterious death was ruled
a suicide but which many believe was
murder
when Larson turned around he saw Toni
Mannix on the bedroom floor examining
two small bullet holes why would the
sight of a suicide have multiple bullet
holes subsequently Christopher Reeve
Marlon Brando and Richard Pryor from
several Superman movies passed away as
did the actor who played Perry White on
the Lois and Clark TV show even Lee
Quigley the infant who played baby
Christopher Reeve died while just a
teenager kinda freaky
number seven he’s vulnerable to more
than just kryptonite
everyone knows that the glowing green
rock from his home planet can weaken or
even kill Superman but the man of might
also has other weaknesses put him under
a red Sun for example and he pretty much
loses all of his powers also magic has
been shown over and over to really do
him in
that weakness to magic extends to
creatures like werewolves and vampires
as well
number six one type of Kryptonite alters
the sexual preferences of straight
Kryptonians exactly what other life is
that I’m supposed to have this is one of
those facts that we bet Superman fans
would rather forget in a very memorable
story from 2003 set in an alternate
timeline Superman gets exposed to a new
form of Kryptonite pink kryptonite as a
result he temporarily is transformed
into a super gay stereotype it’s
essentially confined to a single pan but
it made a huge impression and not
necessarily a positive one intended to
be played for Laughs the swish factor
involved makes it positively
embarrassing wait a second we’re not
allowed to be up here Lois Clark snap
out of it
number five a bizarre number of people
in Superman’s life have the initials ll
– Lois Lane still going where no
reporter has gone before
a little alliteration is nice but the
cast of characters around Superman take
it to an extreme the list of people with
the initials ll starts of course with
the perennial love interest Lois Lane
good timing Lois I want you to be the
first to know I’m hiring a new guy on
the city desk but there have been other
girlfriends that fit this category teen
sweetheart Lana Lang college crush law
real amorous and Kryptonian lover while
are all of course archenemy Lex Luthor
also sports this initials and super
girls original secret identity was Linda
Lee Lois his sister Lucy has also hung
out in Metropolis on occasion it kind of
makes you wonder what the ll is going on
with Superman’s writers what are you
writing miss lane number four Superman
and Batman’s artists went on double
dates you’re late what took you I uh
need um think you’d understand Lois Joe
Shuster was the guy who drew Superman
originally and sherry Robinson was one
of the early artists who gave Batman his
classic look in many ways these two are
the fathers of Superman and Batman
respectively so it’s interesting to note
that they often took out girls together
Robinson referred to these as his
Superman Batman double dates what
happened you tell me I don’t know I
Schuster is reputed to have been a bit
of a bodybuilder and Robinson was more
the contemplative type so the comparison
is especially apt
I’d like to stay and look into it but
I’m expected back in Metropolis another
key to the city number three Clark’s
disguise goes beyond just a pair of
glasses
there’s something I have to tell you I’m
really I mean I I was at first really
nervous about tonight what kind of
reporter can Lois Lane be if she can’t
figure out that Clark Kent is just
Superman wearing glasses in fact
Superman’s efforts go beyond just
putting on specs first those lenses are
tinted to make Clark’s eyes appear at
different shade and though they have the
same hair color they part on different
sides loose Ruby clothing disguises
Clark’s impressive physique as does a
tendency towards poor posture also
Clark’s voice is higher and softer
lacking Superman’s beer aisle tones
finally Clark’s meek personality is a
disguise in and of itself so we can cut
Lois a little slack but only a little
considering how much time she spends
with both of them look I’m Clark Kent
no I’m Superman mild-mannered reporter
superhero number two kryptonite
Perry White and Jimmy Olsen first all
appeared on the Superman radio show I
know I’m gonna get rapped in the mouth
with this but so what
Superman may have debuted in the comic
books but he quickly became a multimedia
sensation comic strips movie serials and
radio programs quickly followed his
funny book debut Jimmy mr. Clark
I mean Kent mr. Kent welcome back oh my
god all of these fan on the ideas and
characters created in the comic book but
the radio show made its own
contributions to the Superman mythos
Kryptonite itself only exists as an
excuse to put Superman out of commission
for a few days to give the voice actor
bud Collyer a vacation from time to time
of course the books were quick to latch
on to the radios kryptonite as a
challenge for the increasingly powerful
man of tomorrow ah careful I’m sorry
just clumsy I guess before we reveal our
top pick here are a few honorable
mentions what’s the S stand for
it’s not an S on my world it means hope
well here it’s an S number one the guys
who created Superman sold all their
rights for a measly 130 dollars I
thought it was a terrific idea and we
went right to work right then and there
Superman may be able to do just about
anything but not even he could keep his
creators from making the biggest mistake
of their lives
writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe
Shuster were quite happy when they sold
their creation for a mere 130 bucks in
order to make money in that game you
have to buy for a little and sell for a
lot right granted 130 dollars went a lot
farther in 1938 than it does today but
it still doesn’t compare to the billions
that the character has generated over
the years it may not exactly be a
victory for truth and justice but it
certainly is the American Way
do you agree with our choices well they
say confessions good for the soul I’d
listen to this man what other facts
about the Man of Steel should we have
included for more enthralling top 10s
published every day be sure to subscribe
to watchmojo.com that was a great scoop
