Top 10 Secluded Jobs

[Music]
physically it’s it’s not a very
demanding job the only thing that can
get a bit trying up here during the
winter is the tremendous sense of
isolation well it just happens to be
exactly what I’m looking for if you like
to be alone then these careers are
exactly what you need
has it been five years six it seems like
a lifetime welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’re counting down our picks for
the top ten secluded jobs for this list
we’ve ranked the jobs and professions
that demand the most isolation number 10
writer novelist to begin to begin how to
start I’m hungry I should get coffee
coffee would help me think it can prove
difficult to strike a work-life balance
as a writer with many authors rarely
seen away from their desks I’m outlining
a new writing project and five months of
peace is just what I want while the rest
of us are busy hustling and bustling
ourselves through everyday routines the
writers are busy writing about our
mannerisms no mix of words or music or
memories can touch that sense of knowing
that you were there and alive in that
corner of time in the world
typically surrounded by scrunched up
bits of paper used notebooks and
overused coffee mugs writers do
occasionally venture outside of their
front door but often only for research
reasons our trip was different it was to
be a classic affirmation of everything
right and true in the National character
a gross physical salute to the fantastic
possibilities of life in this country
the call of the keyboard is just too
tempting to ignore alone again
[Music]
number 9 long distance runner for no
particular reason I decided to go for a
little Oh anyone who’s really serious
about his or her running inevitably
spends vast amounts of time with no one
but him or herself for company
the next morning due to sheer
embarrassment Miranda got what she
needed a running buddy who pushed her
into the 9-minute mile group you don’t
get to be the best by sauntering along
with your buddies in the slow lane so
you’re forced to ditch your friends for
training racing even eating if you’re
really dedicated and even when there are
people around cheering you on from the
sidelines it’s still solely down to you
and your mental toughness the runners
wall wasn’t built for two eventually
you’re gonna hit but runners like to
call the wall and when you do you won’t
be able to breathe or think or you’d
move all you gonna want to do is give up
number eight nature documentary in’
landscape photographer being lucky
enough
elephants gorillas there are few places
on planet earth still untouched by human
exploration but the best documentary
makers and photographers are headed to
those exact areas and even when they’re
not at especially far-flung corners of
the world they are working in locations
where human beings are rare sure there’s
sometimes a small crew but there’s no
one else in the surrounding wilderness
which can sometimes stretch for hundreds
of miles the isolation is worth it
though if it means getting certain
animals on film because to comes they
interact with each other they interact
with a mom so I knew when I saw those
Cubs I was just really excited because I
thought this is a jackpot number 7 a
night watchman a nightshift taken
anywhere it doesn’t usually boast the
most social of workplace atmospheres but
there are some that seem particularly
lonely the museum is undoubtedly an
interesting place to work but once the
lights are out the stuffed animals and
statuettes can get a little creepy
the solitude is even greater though if
you’re after hours down a mineshaft
those places are claustrophobic at the
best of times let alone when you’re on
your own with just a hardhat and a
reading light so when it collapses you
know about it oh you know about it you
feel it you hear it you see it before it
even collapses number six fire lookout
good morning
I have 51 degrees RH 51 percent my winds
are out of the East at 3 cloud cover is
20% with some patchy Valley fog in the
north for a hugely important role but
hugely isolated as well lookout posts
for wildfires are scattered all over the
world don’t look out go ahead Glacier
fire
Valen can’t desert in desert regions
heavy forests and generally inhospitable
spots people are employed to serve a
large areas of land searching for signs
of danger but even with binoculars
there’s rarely sign of human life on the
horizon the existence is a little
comparable to that of a park ranger
particularly in closed season when
fishing and game hunting is forbidden
it’s important to meet with the park
rangers they are the first line of
defense hey girl
both jobs bring you closer to nature but
cut you adrift from ordinary society I
do have a water source it’s my own
accord and my own half from here so it’s
two and a half three mile round trip
number five prospector we all know that
the earth is abundant in resources
minerals and gemstones but not many of
us know exactly how to find anything of
value beneath the ground that’s where a
geological prospector comes in
painstakingly searching for miles with
the hope of landing on a literal gold
mine before all the heavy machinery and
efficient technology there’s a person
armed only with a metal detector a
pickaxe and durable clothing designed
for long treks
[Music]
so spare a thought for the prospector
next time you’re shopping for something
sparkly
really write home about
number four truck driver not just a
lorry drivers murdering prostitutes
first we’re not talking about the ice
cream truck here we’re talking truckers
that are in for the long haul long
distance driving is one of the loneliest
jobs on the planet especially if the
driver is navigating along sparsely
populated roads sometimes all you see is
the inside of your cabin and unchanged
scenery for hundreds of miles and
there’s always the risk of breaking down
in the middle of nowhere
must’ve been worse than I thought I can
give you a lift to a service station in
the movies truckers are often
questionable characters be sure and tell
them Large Marge sent Jeff what’s not
questionable though is how secluded
their lives are well we know is he’s not
the Stig but he is the Stig’s lorry
driving cousin
he’s 100 for the son
number three outpost researcher he in
some saying no we don’t want to go on an
NSF expedition say no we don’t want to
spend three months stuck in a cabin in
the Arctic Circle with an anal nut bag
often deeply immersed in their work
scientists lead fairly removed lives
even under normal circumstances however
some researchers work in almost complete
isolation in some of the most
inaccessible regions of the planet
remote laboratories are set up as work
places for men and women intent on
investigating the unknown especially
with regard to climate change a secluded
job especially synonymous with Arctic
regions you have to be clever to take it
but you have to tolerate cold weather as
well in less than three days we begin
the winter over the sky turns black and
it stays that way for half a year now
nature did not intend for you to survive
out here but here you are here I number
two lighthouse keeper house keeper in
the world he’ll understand me
there are increasingly fewer lighthouse
keepers working in the modern world with
technology taking over their duties but
for those that still man the maritime
stations life can be very lonely
Canada currently has around 35 staffed
buildings in British Columbia and Italy
as of 2011 has 62 the UK automated its
last lighthouse in 1998 while the only
keepers still working in the USA are
volunteers however the US has recognized
the importance of the job a fleet of 14
ships built between 1996 and 2000 were
named after famous lighthouse keepers
to marry a lighthouse keeper and keep
him
penny before we unveil our number one
pick here are some honorable mentions
[Music]
number one astronaut ground control to
Major Tom
ground control to Major Tom
lock your Soyuz hatch and put your
helmet on appropriately positioned at
the end of our countdown no jobs more
secluded than an astronauts at least
every other occupation takes place on
the same planet as everybody else
admit one thing can’t beat the view if
you’re an astronaut then you’ve got a
choice of two views in one direction
there’s the curvature of a globe on
which everything you’ve ever known
exists and in the other there’s endless
black both views are enough to blow in
everyday person’s mind it’s all black
believe me there’s no doubting that
astronauts are awesome but there’s
surely no job more inherently isolating
do you agree with our list do you know
what’s going on here which secluded job
did we skip for more insular top 10s
published every day be sure to subscribe
to watchmojo.com I’m pretty tired thanks
I’ll go home now
