[Music]
hello and welcome to top X where we
countdown the very best of YouTube today
we’re donning our vintage gaming
t-shirts and plugging in our SNES is to
bring you the top 10 retro gaming
YouTube critics these fine channels and
hosts have been selected based on a
number of factors including subscriber
counts monthly views and personal
preference we do have to limit the list
to channels that mainly deal with retro
gaming and better English speaking thus
we must unfortunately exclude the likes
of the game theorists and Judy clingy
news on off conceal otaku yo-jong bejust
apocalypse under mrs. neele
number 10 ahoy let’s go on a journey
into the heart of gaming a holy seems to
have that kind of exploratory attitude
in mind for his videos given his
interests in explaining and analyzing
the intricate details of a gates
creation billions of dollars poured into
education and no expense spared on
technology computers were now an
essential part of academia ranging from
20 minutes to an hour in length his
reviews and other content are part
critical think pieces art documentary
and entirely impressive in their scope
its treatment of the Living Dead is far
removed from modern expectations
essentially a new twist on vampire
legend on top of that a hoist video is
posted tight production technique from
there good pacing to the use of clear
colorful infographics zombies straddle
several eras they endure courtesy of an
occasional willingness to defy
definition and break the rules number 9
happy console gamer how can you go wrong
with an optimistic outlook this cheerful
game critic opts to infuse his reviews
with a more personal touch than most he
goes into detail about how he obtained
certain games what he thought of them as
a kid and so forth which works as a way
to connect with his audience I got it
the next morning
straight to the PlayStation yep on an MN
you know like yeah it was just like
totally virtual reality I’m in this game
happy console gamer taps into that
all-too-familiar sense of awe and wonder
associated with
hood gaming with every point he makes
clearly coming from a place of love I
just I just absolutely adore the game
it’s not just like some fighting beat em
up game oh oh yeah it’s kind of
something I played in my childhood
Streets of Rage
really had an impact on my generation of
course he doesn’t shy away from some
deprecating humorous well how tha did
you come over you go yeah get us really
you know that stuffy no problem ding
ding ding ding ding ding did it did am i
I can do that number eight games AK a to
host show run by Jo Redifer and Dave
White games act is very much a balance
of personality and theme reviews feature
the duo going back and forth in
justifying what games they’ve chosen for
the episode with their individual
preferences and quirks shining through
in the commentary moreover each lineup
of games is chosen based on a common
element being from a particular genre
being launched titles for consoles with
each host justifying their choice our
kids are precious and they cannot handle
these games and I’m surprised you
haven’t gone out and killed somebody
right now well I wanna because I get
really pissed and these games are
causing it it’s a fun dynamic made
better by the hosts chemistry and the
clever end of episode skits

number seven the gaming historian
sometimes to know what the future holds
it’s important to look back
enter Norman Caruso a gaming enthusiast
with a degree in history who’s not
afraid to dive deep into gaming’s
storied past so let’s dive into the
history of the Famicom disk system what
it was why it was created and how it
failed his work as the gaming historian
definitely has some of the most range of
any retro gaming critic Caruso has
discussed specific developers
intercompany conflicts and even the
historical basis of certain games it all
revolves around a big legal battle
between two juggernauts in the video
game industry whatever the subject
gaming historian remains clear and fair
in his analysis even when
contextualizing some of the gaming
industry’s most divisive and
controversial moments
although significantly less popular than
Mortal Kombat night rap was just as
controversial number 6 metal Jesus rocks
get ready to bang your fists thrash your
hair and enjoy some delightful criticism
metal Jesus rocks has an unspoken focus
on the early to mid 90s in terms of
retro gaming critique with the spotlight
off and landing on obscure or forgotten
titles when the bosses are these huge
fish
oh yeah you know the games gonna be
great right yeah what’s disarming but
absolutely welcomed is how open-minded
and affable metal Jesus used to be he
gets along well with his co-hosts and
guests talks candidly about the
aesthetic choices and experimental games
of the 90s and maintains a healthy
amount of curiosity about the medium
despite getting good reviews when it was
released the game sold very poorly in
North America however it was recently
revived for the Wii and remade in 2009
number 5 lazy game reviews LGR
commentary history and snark on retro
computer games and more trust us the
name is not indicative of the quality
here lazy game reviews posted by Clint
Basinger tackles the wide world of early
PC gaming with a particular attention
paid to the 80s and 90s
Clint’s greatest strengths as a critic
is his in-depth understanding of the era
he navigates the minutiae of older
computing technology with ease and never
ceases to impress with his surplus
effects the way it plays with the
aesthetic of the levels and the pacing
of the combat
masterful to the point where having one
without the other is doable but why
would you do that it’s also clear right
off the bat that Clinton prides himself
on seeing the good and noteworthy
elements of games even while thoroughly
critiquing them balanced and insightful
it’s a winning combination much like
SimCity and like that game it’s probably
best to play in a higher resolution mode
with fewer colors since you get a better
overall view of the gameplay however I’m
going to be playing in the lower res
256-color mode because it’s how I first
played it and I just like chunky dos
games number four patch the NES pump
well he certainly has got his priorities
in order based in New Jersey pat the nes
punk mostly reviews significantly flawed
or atrocious Nintendo Entertainment
System games though the creations of
other Golden Age game companies
occasionally rear their heads – there’s
also an awkward jump punch a crouching
punch and the ability to crawl probably
to the control deck to push the power
button that approaches reviews from an
informative let’s play s manner taking
the audience through the experience of
playing this or that game it’s a solid
angle that makes grasping how a game
does or doesn’t work very easy and it
leaves pat room to squeeze in amusing
asides and double entendre so plenty
everything shoots white balls white
balls here white balls here more white
balls being shot enough with the white
balls number 3 classic game room talk
about a channel with an interesting
history appearing initially in 1999
classic game room only ran for about a
year before cancellation but was revived
in 2008 in its YouTube based forum and
this is a new series called classic game
room HD the show has regularly dedicated
time and energy to reviewing older games
and gaming themed paraphernalia though
it doesn’t stray away from modern titles
either it’s big draw is its host Mark
Butler who exudes confidence when
speaking about games and manages to
capture the youthful whimsy that older
games inspiring people when you’re
sniping people it gives you this drug to
take that like slows down your heart
rate it keeps you from shaking as much I
can’t I still can’t pronounce it that
guy’s a friend that the show proved
popular enough to inspire the creation
of the ECG our undertow spin-off channel
isn’t surprising
my number-two jontron so anyone looking
for a conventional content creator would
do well to turn back now
you see jontron directs much of his
energy into producing surreal and
unorthodox video reviews his videos have
included the likes of skeletons with
guns the ghosts of still living
celebrities living Garfield phones and
that’s usually before you get into the
often obscure games that John tackles
hello oh god I forgot this body a body
fortunately the sheer absurdity of
jontron is held together by excellent
production values and John’s
wholehearted embrace of his characters
slightly unhinged persona it’s wacky and
weird material of the best variety
unlike you after your mass extinction
okay I get a second try and huh I think
I know or I’m going to direct this oh my
god that’s so mean
before we unveil our top pick here a few
honorable mentions

number one Angry Video Game Nerd
cinemassacre the title screen looks like
ass the text is so sloppy I can hardly
read it I think they made a typo he’s
angry he’s a nerd and in the early days
of criticism as entertainment he was a
major trend setter
[Music]
james rolfe the nerd of the title
published his first review in May 2004
with the scatological humor and
elaborate skits that defines the show in
the coming years but what I do need to
read again and again constantly is the
morning Sun has vanquished the horrible
night
how about vanquish this horrible game
however what’s remained consistently
part of AVGN and the production company
cinemassacre as a whole is the
underlying creativity of rolf and his
team the jokes are lowbrow but well
handled the nerd character manages to be
entertaining ly pessimistic and there’s
been an increasing effort made to
deliver heartfelt thoughtful commentary
on games
well that’s our list but there are
probably many more praiseworthy
retro-gaming critics out there so tell
us about them in the comments below be

Instagram and Facebook and for more top
