time to honor the best games from the
best-selling handheld console of all
time
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
counting down our picks for the top 10
Nintendo DS games just like our ps2 list
narrowing down the best DS games to just
10 was pretty hard to make things that
fit easier we’re setting a limit of one
game per franchise and we’re also
excluding ports from previous systems
although remakes will be allowed number
10
Professor Layton and the unwound future
kicking off our list is the ever so
lovable Sherlock Holmes inspired
inspector who along with his sidekick
Luke helps solve puzzles that somehow
help their situations this one’s as good
as salt we’re giving the nod to the
unwound future for it’s neat time travel
story nice plot twists and the fact that
it has a giant robot that’s always a
plus number 9 Elite Beat Agents a rhythm
game that was one of the best examples
of what the ds2 dues compared to other
consoles at the time he was a
touchscreen rhythm based game in which
stylish men and black inspired agents
solved world conflicts by dancing well
whatever works agents are
comprising some bouncing covers of
popular songs like walkie talkie man and
pant hatch we hope you got a decent pair
of headphones handy for some head
banging on the bus with this one
number eight Advance Wars dual strike
while days of ruin tried to take the
series in a more dark and grittier
direction we’re sticking to the game
that kept the charm going from the Game
Boy Advance series making use of the
DS’s two screens with a mode known as
dual fronts where you have to
simultaneously manage two different
armies on two different maps at the same
time we hope you’re ready for some
nail-biting battles number seven grand
theft auto chinatown wars talk about a
bolt from the blue
bringing the seedy crime open-world
series to the Nintendo DS was almost
hard to believe inspired by the classic
top-down view style of the first two GTA
games this installment is set in a
scaled-down version of Liberty City from
GTA 4 and focuses on Wang Lee the son of
a triad boss who’s almost killed upon
the arrival in the city and has his
family heirlooms stolen as such it’s up
to him to go on a classic GTA rampage to
get it back
best day off the sidewalk until he’s
done
– gram number six Mario and Luigi
bowser’s Inside Story
continuing the wacky RPG style from its
predecessors this game has the Mario
Brothers and Peach inside the stomach of
their arch-nemesis Bowser trying to get
out in some way other than the back door
the interesting spent here is that it
involves the brothers manipulating
Bowser’s body in order to get him to
progress all while trying to stay alive
inside the infamous burning lizard
number five the world ends with you one
of the most unique RPGs we’ve ever seen
came from none other than the RPG
experts over at Square Enix I don’t get
people never have never will set in a
fictitious town loosely based off
Tokyo’s Shibuya district the game
follows a socially awkward teenager who
finds himself stuck in a mysterious game
with no memory of how we ended up in it
the game’s unique dual screen combat
system along with its funky soundtrack
makes it worth checking out if you’re
getting tired of the cliche RPG formula
number four the Legend of Zelda Phantom
Hourglass the Zelda slot was hotly
debated in the WatchMojo office between
this game and Spirit Tracks ultimately
Phantom Hourglass
just nudged ahead when it ranked higher
on our suggestions page following up
from Wind Waker this interesting take on
the Zelda franchise was controlled using
only the touchscreen taking to the open
seas once again in a unique blend of 2d
Zelda game play with 3d graphics clever
players made good use of the touchscreen
to take notes as well number three New
Super Mario Bros
Mario’s long-awaited return to 2d
platforming since Super Mario Land 2 in
1992 was met with open arms
the best-selling game on the DS with
over 30 million copies sold the game
introduced brand new power-ups like the
mega mushroom which saw Mario grow to
colossal size
and she’ll Mario in which Mario gets his
own Koopa shell to spin around it
topping off the gray package was the
immensely fun Mario and Luigi two-player
battle mode and a nice assortment of
addictive minigames number two Mario
Kart DS a series that needs no
introduction the DS version of the ever
so popular kart racing series set
revolutionary new standards that would
become the new norm for future versions
notably the inclusion of retro tracks
from the previous Mario Kart games and
the ability to mix and match your Kart
and driver stats
plus it was Nintendo’s first ever online
game safe to say this was the must-have
title for the DS
before we get to number one let’s run
through some honorable mentions
number one pokémon HeartGold and
SoulSilver with over 20 Pokemon titles
on the DS it’s no surprise that it was
the definitive series for the system and
taking the top spot are the fantastic
remakes to what in our opinion are the
best Pokemon games in the series
it was brimming with content from weekly
events to multiple legendary Pokemon and
16 gyms rather than the series standard
of just eight the game also came with
the Polka walkers which allowed you to
raise your Pokemon even when you weren’t
playing the game their remakes of two
classics that were way ahead of their
time and that is a rare title to earn do
you agree with our list
with so many great DS games to choose
from it’s likely some of your favorites
didn’t make it so let us know what your
favorites are in the comments and for
more top 10s published every day be sure
