even in the best of films there are
things that defy reason by spirit I

welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
counting down our picks for the top ten
examples of movie logic that make no
sense
for this list will be scouring various
films throughout history to find those
tropes and trends that seem nonsensical
or bizarre when examined closely I’ll be
learning it whether it’s the physics of
action film the suspense building
elements of four or cinema or simply a
recurring gag in Hollywood productions
we find these Ray’s the most I browse in
terms of logical leaps number 10
destroy the screen destroy the computer
your death amounts to the same as your
life a zero somewhere yes I was saying
need to insure a computer system is
completely and utterly wrecked just
destroy the screen and be on your merry
way
more than a few films operate under the
logic that a monitor is the same thing
as a computer perhaps because the
monitor is how information on a computer
is displayed or due to early computers
such as the Commodore PE T containing
both a monitor and vital internal parts
would he send you
whatever the inspiration for this line
of thinking it’s still a bit ridiculous
you cannot say John Connor watch me
number nine one match to light it all
stay close to the candles the staircase
can be treacherous dark corridors and
chambers beware somebody’s got a match
at first glance using a match a torch or
a lighter to light one’s way seeing is
reasonable enough until the question of
how such a tiny source of light can
illuminate vast spaces comes up
in spite of their small size and limited
ability to produce light in cinema these
are all astoundingly effective be it in
a tight ventilation shaft or the
location of a square dance nothing
appears immune to these small lighted
objects come onto the coast we get
together have a few laughs
number eight last-second bomb
disarmament
thank goodness for split-second timing
and criminal negligence
often in films when the prospect of a
bomb threat comes up the heroes do
everything in their power to stop the
bomb from detonating and at the very
last moment they typically succeed
however this raises a key question why
would anyone put a timer on their bomb
if they could just detonate it right
away 3 2 1 oh it always stops at 1 on
the show
it’s a careless oversight that costs
villains victory at the last second and
it’s usually completely unnecessary to
their plan so I guess you do win and
your prize will be getting blown to
smithereens in about how long this is
macGruber we better scoot we do have a
wedding to plan
number 7 keyboards are the way of the
future
perhaps computer mice are a foreign
concept in films oh you don’t want to do
that I’ll be able to access that as soon
as we generate some encrypted pass codes
can we generate some encrypted pass
codes get some of those at least that’s
what we figure based on the logic fly
didn’t films cuz it seems that
accomplishing anything meaningful on a
computer can only be done by frantic
typing on the keyboard with mice and
other peripherals being of lesser
importance if they appear at all few
more years develop meaning we won’t even
have to dig anymore where’s the fun in
that it’s a little distorted but I know
cadence of computer Montgomery Scott
typing out the formula for transparent
aluminum in Star Trek 4 for example is
entirely based around keyboard use hello
computer just use the keyboard keyboard
Oh quaint
though some computer users in reality
may be able to type that fast it usually
results in spelling errors to say
nothing of the importance that computer
mice possess
number six bullets throw people we don’t
claim to be scientists
but we’re reasonably sure that bullets
don’t work this way you tell you about
my mother yet action cinema continues to
operate under the belief that when a
person gets shot his or her body gets
thrown a fair distance thing is easy to
practice allowed and never ever do it in
heavy traffic
from the Terminator being knocked back
with a shotgun blast the agent Jones
getting shot in the head in the Matrix
dodge this there’s no shortage of bodies
being sent flying from the force of
gunshots now what makes for impressive
imagery it defies logic number five
static equals def Dallas walkie-talkies
are wonderful things but beware if the
person on the other end stops speaking
because in movies if you get static that
means the other person is dead they’re
gone we’re not precisely sure where this
line of logic originated from but it
certainly crops up in a variety of
places typically to raise suspense and
make people both in the film and in the
audience feel uneasy
it’s hard to deny that it’s effective
but there could be any number of reasons
why static comes up in a radio
transmission besides to transmit static
the person on the other end needs to be
pressing the button and that’s hard to
do if they are no longer living number
four landing in water is like landing on
a cloud water may seem safe but in
situations involving a long fall it’s a
deadly adversary
if ever a character needs to make a
quick escape they elect to jump from a
great height into a body of water the
presumption more than likely being that
the water will cushion their fall
unfortunately this is not the case at
least in real life hitting the water at
80 miles per hour is like hitting a
concrete wall the average human body
falls at 120 miles per hour this is
nonsense I’m going
this fact makes scenes like James Bond’s
long drop in the opening of 2012 Skyfall
increasingly unreal take the bloody shot
number three just a concussion no
worries okay kid give it to me suffer a
potentially debilitating head injury not
a problem just walk it off yes
concussions seem to not have the same
impact in films as in reality other than
causing disorientation or worse symptoms
the instead come across as just another
mild wound for heroes and heroines to
overcome consider the frequency with
which Marty McFly gets hit in the head
over the course of the Back to the
Future films at least once per movie we
can do this the easy way or the hard way
Marty is rendered unconscious yet
recovers with no apparent long-term
damage it’s odd to see to say the least
number two wait your turn to fight I
will be the one chivalry is not dead it
seems should a hero or heroine be faced
by a group of foes Hollywood says and it
only makes sense for the enemies to
attack one by one is it because rushing
the hero all at once is unsportsmanlike
is it that the villains believe one
single warrior can defeat the hero
or is it just an unwillingness to
retreat and think of a new plan
we’re not sure but it seems arbitrary
and entirely unnecessary to have an
attack force waiting for their turn to
fight this is how it goes you attacked
me one at a time and I’ll knock you out
with a single punch
okay go dudes good before we unveil our
top pick here are some honorable
mentions
move the car is he open the door open
the door get the door the cops are
following what where the back on the
right page board any taxi driver will
drop you off there I can read a map
tomorrow midday tomorrow 12:00 you’re in
a hurry let’s do this take your pants
off
what you heard me take your pants off
I’m kidding you weirdo don’t do that why
would you do that come on let’s go go go
go number one
everything must explode
from shooting cars to blowing up
spaceships it seems like objects and
film are predestined to burst into
flames explosions are firmly established
in cinema as a signature form of
spectacle but increasingly it seems as
though everything is primed to blow up
whether it’s sand dunes and robots
ships in the vacuum of space or entire
planet
explosions are more or less guaranteed
to occur it’s fun to watch unfold but
we’re certain the real world isn’t that
prone to spontaneous explosions
probably we hope
holy shit now scream do you agree with
our list it’s like a joke
what movie logic doesn’t make sense to
you I don’t think you understood me I
can hear everything you’re saying out
there one called me you go took off me
you take the lead for more logical top
