turns let’s change things up a bit with
a fresh-faced Spartans welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re counting
down our list for the top ten sequels
that changed the lead character for this
list we are looking at movie sequels
that shifted their focus onto a
different character whether the new lead
is in the original film or is new to the
franchise I think we just found a
transformer we are basing our choices on
how iconic and memorable the switches
are but not necessarily if the change
was for the better one team of number 10
Jim to Doyle
28 days later 28 weeks later
Danny Boyle’s zombie infection film
features a group of survivors making
their way across the British countryside
led by Jim portrayed by Kelly and Murphy
shame Jim
despite high praise for his character
Murphy was unable to return for the
second film which kept the setting but
introduced a new batch of survivors this
time with Jeremy Renner as sergeant
Doyle are you sergeant Doyle Delta move
top unit as a Delta Force sniper Doyle
was much more of an action start than
Jim while also managing to be just his
emotionally complex as well as a brave
and selfless character I’ll need you
there number 9 Nancy Thompson to jesse
walsh a Nightmare on Elm Street a
Nightmare on Elm Street 2 Freddy’s
revenge the horror genre has a tendency
to take an iconic villain and feature
him harassing a new protagonist in each
film therefore it’s no surprise that the
second film in The Nightmare on Elm
Street series kept Freddy Krueger but
swapped out the original heroine Nancy
for a new face Jesse the next time
around
now though she did not appear in the
film
Nancy’s influence was still felt in
Freddy’s revenge since Jesse moves into
Nancy’s former home and discovers her
journal which recounts the events of the
first movie and gives insight into
Freddy’s powers and vulnerabilities
Nancy Tom’s 1428 Elm Street that’s right
here
number 8 Sam Witwicky Takei Jagger
transformers trilogy transformers age of
extinction okay here’s the dream you’re
be – dream gone the Transformers
franchise is no stranger to swapping out
characters switching out the female lead
Mikaela Bane’s from the first two films
in the third flick for a new character
Carly Spencer for example this is over
and when time came for a fourth film age
of extinction the human cast received a
complete overhaul including its lead
character young Sam Witwicky played by
Shia LaBeouf Sam began his arc in high
school are you Samuel James with wiki
descendant of Archibald Witwicky
yeah but in film 4 in his place was a
new character single father Cade Yeager
portrayed by Mark Wahlberg and he was
much older and much more experienced
than Sam I think we just found a
transformer did he make the franchise
older and more experienced as well hmm
that’s up to you to decide I need to
know how it works I’m an inventor this
could be a game changer for me
number seven major Allen duck Shafer to
Lieutenant Mike Harrigan predator
predator – I couldn’t see me the first
predator film follows a Special Forces
Group tracking a deadly alien through
the Central American jungle
kill me me coming the team has some
pretty tough characters including Dutch
played by Arnold Schwarzenegger
one team of after negotiations for
Schwarzenegger to appear in the sequel
fell through things were changed up the
second time around moving the time
period from the present to the near
future and changing the setting to Los
Angeles which hit in Harrogate a party
big kid and kid just have a seat up in
Laughlin but the biggest change was of
course getting a new lead Mike Harrigan
played by Danny Glover who though he
brought a very different energy to the
sequel didn’t help the movie earn very
good reviews obsessive-compulsive
personality a history of excessive
physical force however the film still
had a modest showing at the box office
number 6
Leonidas – Themistocles 300 300 rise of
an empire bold Leonidas gives testament
Wow bloodline 300 famously brings the
historic last stand of the 300 Spartans
at Thermopylae to the big screen with
Gerard Butler as the spartan king
leonidas spotters prepare for glory of
course the fantasy war flick takes some
artistic license with history as does
the second film which chronicles the
greco-persian war during and after the
events of the first four turns
better your breakfast in Itachi but
tonight we died and he’ll rise of an
empire focuses on Athenian general
Themistocles beginning with the Battle
of Marathon and then moving to
Artemisium which happens concurrently
with the last stand of the Spartans and
culminates with the Battle of Salamis
while the follow-up did quite well
commercially many felt that Butler was
sorely missed this time around yes
number 5 Jason Bourne – Aaron cross
Bourne trilogy Bourne Legacy this is
Jason Bourne I was wondering when you
were going to make this call Matt Damon
breathed new life into the spy genre in
2002 when he played Jason Bourne in the
Bourne Identity I can’t remember
anything that happened before two weeks
ago after the film went on to become a
smashing success two sequels The Bourne
Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum were
made both directed by Paul Greengrass
however when Greengrass elected not to
return for a fourth film Damon left the
project as well meaning that the series
needed a new leading character and an
actor to play him any diminished
sensation nope legacy follows Aaron
cross played by Jeremy Renner and the
fallout surrounding the events of
ultimatum I’m Erin by the way reviews
for the fourth film were mixed so
perhaps it speaks volumes that both
Damon and Greengrass are slated to
return for movie number five David Webb
that’s your real name
you were born for 1571 at Nixa Missouri
why don’t you come in and we’ll talk
about number four Dominic Toretto
– Brian O’Conner – Shawn Boswell The
Fast and the Furious too fast too
furious The Fast and the Furious
Tokyo Drift I live my life a quarter
mile at a time without a doubt the faces
of The Fast and the Furious franchise
are Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto and
Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner – Don was
had you you’ve never had you never had
your car both characters featured
prominently in the first film of the
series with Corrado in a slightly more
prominent role let’s go for a little
ride however when Toretto was not
featured in 2 fast 2 furious O’Conner
stepped into the spotlight that’s the
final Connor school baby
the third film though featured an
all-new cast with Toretto only appearing
in a brief cameo allowing Lucas black to
play a new lead
Shawn Boswell in Tokyo Drift I’m new
here
ah Danko say hey Bo’s Erica possible
yes-man hey got a Scott as one of the
worst review films in a series is it any
wonder that the other two actors came
back for the sequels
number three dr. William will Rodman –
Malcolm Rise of the Planet of the Apes
dawn of the Planet of the Apes I’m
taking him out of here right now James
Franco was chosen to lead the reboot of
the iconic Planet of the Apes franchise
as will when it was rebooted in 2011
risks you give your own father
experimenting truck I could finish your
career with one phone call saying the
trouble I quit however the reboot sequel
was taken in a new direction with a
directorial swap while many of the ape
characters carried over from the first
film dawn of the Planet of the Apes
featured an all-new human cast led by
Jason Clarke is any of this making any
sense to you Clarke plays Malcolm much
more of an everyman and an average
survivor in extraordinary circumstances
in contrast to will who’s a scientist
that invents an Alzheimer’s cure with
unintended side effects on Apes and
humans Caesar I’m sorry this is my fault
this has to stop both domes were
commercially successful but it was the
ladder that was praised especially for
its acting and although another sequel
has been announced the cast is still to
be determined
number two Sarah Connor to John Connor
The Terminator
Terminator 2 Judgment Day then you’re
from the future – is that right right
right the main character of the
Terminator franchise is a hereditary
title in the original film the title
character is sent back to 1984 from a
post-apocalyptic future to exterminate
John Connor before he ever even existed
by killing his mother Sarah face now I
know it’s naming the sequel Judgment Day
follows a similar premise but this time
around John is a preteen while his
mother now having gone a bit off the
deep end takes a supporting role nobody
believed her not even me
in further sequels John is an adult and
a full-blown action hero while Sarah
does not return from t three onward
you’re John Connor before we reveal our
top pick here are a few honorable
mentions special agent Graham was an
unexpected pleasure I’m sorry to bother
you can talk to Lecter I know it’s very
late well
don’t quite nano respond to that well
all I’m saying is that I just like
taking care of you that’s all uh I am a
scientific Explorer hi and he’s uh yeah
Hank Hank
number one dr. Alan Grant – dr. Ian
Malcolm – Owen Grady Jurassic Park the
lost world Jurassic Park 3 Jurassic
world and he slashes at you with this 6
inch retractable claw like a razor on
the middle toe he doesn’t bother to buy
2 jugular like a lie and say no no he
slashes at you here here the first film
in the Jurassic Park franchise centers
on paleontologist Alan Grant played by
Sam Neill with Jeff Goldblum as a
bizarre Ian Malcolm in an auxiliary role
that is one big pile of shit
Malcolm was promoted to the star player
in the lost world giving us more of a
glimpse of his unique perspective
that’s why she’s like you were gonna
document what you think you were gonna
say animus Jurassic Park 3 through Grant
back into the lead role and the
long-awaited fourth installment gives
audiences a brand new lead oh and Grady
played by Chris Pratt evacuate the
island however one thing is clear about
this franchise the dinosaurs are always
the real stars of the show were it not
for the cataclysmic events which
overtook them it is entirely possible
that Raptors rather than humans would
have become the dominant species on this
planet do you agree with our list which
character switch do you think was the
most memorable for more transformative
