you may have a funky name but his acting
is no joke
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
counting down our picks for the top 10
Joaquin Phoenix performances okay Jenna
that’s fine listen I got us a car but we
gotta move now
we’re not allowed to do that Jack David
the shit’s going down outside these
walls we’ve gotta cover it for this list
we’re taking a look at those
performances that show off this actor at
his finest and/or most memorable so
that’s pressure the fuck I don’t give a
shit
number 10 Merrill has signs were they
playing a man who must hide from an
alien invasion alongside his brother
niece and nephew the fear felt by
brother and former baseball star Meryl
is palpable throughout this M night
Shyamalan sci-fi thriller how certain
are you that this was a male oh I don’t
know any girls who could run like that
Joaquin Phoenix’s performance not only
adds to the overall tension of the film
but in the end it is his character that
has chosen to be the one to let off some
steam and save the day
an underrated movie with strong
performances science was a good addition
to Phoenix’s canon
number nine himself I’m still here I
want to hear if you really if you’re
really getting busy playing around those
eyes
yeah I’m ready already first introduced
to many people with an unusual and
fascinating interview on The Late Show
with David Letterman well can you tell
us about your days with the Unabomber
this version of Joaquin Phoenix took
over his persona for the entire filming
period of this mockumentary with the
actor pretending that he’d retired from
Hollywood to become a hip-hop star Wow
yeah I really wanted to be like a
hip-hop bohemian rhapsody’ car you know
I want it to be epic this unusual
project was buoyed by the commitment of
its star and the illusion he created
with the help of a few friends for me I
you know I have a connection about
though anyone has a connection to any
kind of music you know it’s uh Adam it’s
not where you I’m just I’m just making
sure despite mixed reviews it was
certainly a risky experiment for the
actor and a memorable one at that
Oh what do I have to do but like a shirt
on my head and act weird I’m not I’m
trying to act weird dude all the time to
say you’re doing a movie where it’s like
a cat being a full-body cast that kind
of humor who gives you shit number eight
Bruno Weiss the immigrant mammy are in
the exclusion want to take Spain to what
that matters Bruno is one of the most
complicated characters in a career that
has been defined by nuance as we never
quite know how to feel about the man I’m
sorry you’re in a difficult situation I
need to work I can take you to my place
of business
Peter the benefactor and pimp of a woman
who needs to raise money to get her
sister out of quarantine he begins to
become romantically interested in her as
time goes on in this 2013 drama
knocks tell the pack Oh
lending the roll the sizable gravitas
that made him a star to begin with this
film as a whole leaned heavily on
Joaquin’s broad shoulders and earned him
a Newport Beach Film Festival Award
along with his co-stars navien kochiya
and jeremy renner so you go and you
forget about me and you forget about
this place and you forget about those
things did I miss you too number seven
Leonard credit or two lovers I’m Leonard
yeah of screaming a suicidal man in the
enviable position of having the hearts
of two beautiful women
Leonard is an absolute weirdo he still
has this body bulla problem justice
today the penis it would be nice if you
join us okay and while his behavior can
be downright creepy once again Phoenix
makes him relatable in this romantic
drama I love you
I do every moment you see of him on
screen you can see the wheels turning in
his brain even if you have no idea what
those thoughts consist of which is one
of the roles and films ultimate
strengths ah okay I got no reason to
stay huh I just want to be with you ever
that is I don’t care number six
Larry doc Sportello inherent vice whoa
what are you doing here yeah well let’s
see if you’re free for dinner I’m gonna
freak you out this collaboration between
Phoenix and director Paul Thomas
Anderson again garnered the actor
attention and Award nominations this
time while portraying the perpetually
high private investigator attempting to
fix his ex-girlfriend’s latest problem
grasps at the remnants of the lifestyle
he has lived just as the hippie dream
seems to be ending he needs your help
doc uh
you know I have a an office out that’s
like a day job and everything
dense but fun this crime comedy drama is
mostly held together by Phoenix’s
performances along with the vision of
its director if Mickey was currently
being held against his will in some
private nuthouse then Doc’s immediate
chore would be to try and find out which
one do you like the lighting Oh number
five Jimmy Emmett to die for what about
you James
Jax his first major role after his
teenage years it is this one out of
every character in to-die-for
whose internal monologue remains the
most inscrutable but I taught me to keep
doing what I was doing
yeah please okay then you have to do you
have to do in the beginning
Jimmy Emmett’s motivation to keep the
woman who’s entranced with him happy is
clear but as the comedy-drama continues
and he is overwhelmed by his cohorts his
driving force appears to falter oh now
I’ll do it torn between his desires and
a lack of understanding of his victims
reaction Jimmy is by far the most
interesting character upon repeat
viewings of this Gus Van Sant flick it
was just we were you were what I love
number four
Commodus gladiator take my hand I only
offer it once every great action film
requires somebody to hate and boy did
Commodus rise to the occasion in this
epic historical drama he shouldn’t be
alive affects his face terribly fast
insufferable and whiny
the character could have come off as a
seemingly by-the-numbers bad guy but
there is never a moment where he doesn’t
feel like a wholly original creation
straight
we’ll remove your helmet and tell me
your name altering between board vicious
and scare Phoenix’s typical villain
eventually becomes a monster who
infuriates filmgoers on a visceral level
getting under our skin and never letting
go that makes us breathless doesn’t it
smile for me now
number three Johnny Cash clocked the
line hello I’m Johnny Cash playing a
truly beloved figure like Johnny Cash is
a tough task for anyone which is why it
had to be a sweet victory for Phoenix
that this was the film that finally
netted him a Golden Globe I’m gonna
stand over there over here also bringing
him nominations for Best Actor at the
BAFTA and Academy Awards Phoenix is
surprisingly haunting singing voice may
have been the biopics biggest surprise
when I was just a baby
my mama told me son always be a good boy
don’t ever play with guns topped off by
believably inhabiting the body and soul
of an addict Phoenix arguably gave the
best performance of his career up to
that point number two Theodore Twombly
her hi I’m Dora we all get a little
lonely sometimes and it just so happens
that Theodore perpetually lives in that
state that is until a new presence in
his life changes all of that
and makes him full and much more
complete what do i clayed you have a
name um yes Samantha as a story about a
man who falls in love with the operating
system on his computer my description
alone it probably should have never
worked as a movie good morning Theodore
good morning
oh do you know how to proofread yeah of
course greatly due to the casting of
Phoenix however this dramatic rom-com
works in every way and his Golden Globe
and many other nominations were
certainly richly deserved Jim I’m sorry
to wake you okay I just wanted to hear
your voice and tell you how much I love
you before we reveal our top pick here
are a few honorable mentions hey yeah
yes dr. Lampkin his son
– cruelly a you rascal your comedies are
becoming quite the rage I have to claw
my way to a ticket let me exit a
charming young man in last week’s comedy
I had no idea he was an imbecile
my mother is unaware of the reason for
my visit today hmm she did not give her
consent or consult me in any form this
is a professor Ethan Lerner
good afternoon my associate eat them
Dwight or no afternoon no I want cash
25 look I know somebody else who’s very
interested in this merchandise man say
your name Freddie quell say it again
Freddie quell say it again
number one Freddie quell the master I
shall say one more time just to make
sure you know who you are Frank whoa
grunting nominations for a Golden Globe
BAFTA and Academy Award among many many
others
Freddie was perfectly brought to life in
the hands of this talented actor how did
you come to sanction the auntie where I
was drunken she looked good and you did
it again and again yes a sex addicted
alcoholic World War two vet falls under
the control of a charismatic leader
it is Phoenix’s willingness to remain
quiet and understated that makes this
character feel so real
if it weren’t for the calm before the
storm he could have felt them secured
and unrelatable but luckily for the film
and audiences this character’s ego is
never an issue and the result is this
unforgettable performance you all right
how’s this helping do you agree with our
list
you know what’s your favorite joaquin
phoenix performance it’s just those
