developers designers or directors who
created memorable and enduring
franchises that still affect the way
that video games are developed today
things are so connected that uh you know
in some sense we’re not even trying to
entertain individuals were trying to
entertain communities or hive minds of
people that’s almost a different way to
think about it number 10 Sid Mayer was
really our feeling that turn-based was
not just because we couldn’t do
real-time it was a genre that made sense
that that that allowed a lot of people
to play who might not be comfortable in
real time game Sid Meier’s made a name
for himself by creating some of the most
addictive and rewarding strategy games
of all time and you know stamping his
name on every single one of them
Sid Mayer’s Pirates Sid Meier’s
Civilization Sid Meier’s railroads if
you’re a fan of the strategy genre
you’ve almost certainly known his name
his games combined simulation and
strategy in a way that give players
ultimate power and who doesn’t
occasionally want a little bit of that
who drinks the water I forgive him says
the Lord will have a spring inside him
welling up for eternal life
number nine Alexey paggio you’ve seen
this man’s games everywhere whether you
know that he made it or not it’s on your
phone it’s in your browser it’s on your
consoles the Russian designer has earned
his spot on our list for one of the most
iconic puzzle games of all time
Tetris a game that he didn’t earn
royalties for until 12 years after the
game’s release so basically I did it on
my spare time and I was the just a
programmer in computer center of Academy
of Science more recently this Russian
game designers worked on hectic and
hectic to which many Xbox players should
be familiar with number 8 war inspector
I hope the pinnacle is some decades
ahead of him – I’m not done yet
producing both tabletop and video games
Specter has done plenty to earn his fame
in the gaming community Deus Ex Ultima
system shock and thief are all under his
belt and are considered gems of the 90s

the building lately he’s dabbled with
Disney to produce the Epic Mickey series
but Specter goes beyond producing he’s
an academic a critic and is trying to
change the way that people talk about
games for the better so I’ve had a

Gabe Newell
we’re always advised to stay in school
and that seems to be a pretty solid plan
unless you’re Gabe Newell dropped out of
Harvard and went on to become a
millionaire
thanks to work at Microsoft and in
software before quitting to found the
valve corporation and that’s a perfectly
fine alternative to while he’s more of a
producer than a developer his
involvement with a little series called
half-life is notable enough even if you
choose to ignore the fact that the steam
network has changed the PC gaming
landscape all together and is poised to
take the living room next everything
that we do at valve is really a
collaboration I tend to show up that
award shows that everything we’ve done
our games and steam is a result of the
collaboration among all of us number six
will write I think you can convey a lot
of very deep emotional philosophical
cultural viewpoints through games
whether you’re lording over your
carefully crafted city or micromanaging
a suburban household we have wheelwright
to thank for letting our inner control
freak run free the most successful and
addictive PC simulation games on the
market are born from Wright’s genius
nowadays you can’t even hear the word
simulation without thinking of his
iconic games like SimCity Sim farm and
of course the Sims there are a thousand
other fields out there that will bring
you into kind of interesting areas that

Hideo Kojima
snake hideo kojima always had a vision
he dabbled in writing illustrating
filmmaking and designing but one fateful
day he brought all those skills to
konami
and helped create the series that
revolutionized the stealth genre Metal
Gear he also made the adventure game
snatcher and policenauts
but the Metal Gear series really blew up
with the release of Metal Gear Solid 4
the ps1 and Kojima has been a household
name ever since or at least any
household that has a PlayStation number
for Shinji Mikami chain soon every genre
has one mastermind who perfected it or
at least came pretty close Shinji Mikami
is that mastermind for survival horror
games with his phenomenal Resident Evil
series the franchise essentially founded
the genre and is still cited today as an
influence for game designers trying
their hand at horror
he’s also largely responsible for
classics like the hack and slash gem
Devil May Cry series the Zelda inspired
artistic adventure Okami
as well as his latest survival horror
tale the evil within number 3 Hironobu
Sakaguchi
konichiwa I will misakiguchi ah je
m’appelle you don’t know Ville Sakaguchi
when most people hear the term JRPG they
think of spiky hair big swords adorable
mascots effeminate male characters and
strategic game plan
and a lot of that is thanks to Sakaguchi
and his brainchild the Final Fantasy
series but his work doesn’t end there as
his resume also covers Chrono Trigger
Blue Dragon Lost Odyssey and the last
story he may no longer be with Square
Enix but he continues to charm audiences
with nostalgic heartfelt JRPG goodness

two John Carmack I knew what I wanted to

sort of my I heroes as a teenager a

and innovative games to name a few
Commander Keen Wolfenstein doom and
quake if you weren’t playing at least
one of these on your dos based or
Windows 95 based computer you were doing
something wrong John Romero may take the
limelight on occasions but Carmack’s
assembly programming skills to make the
3d engines ahead of their time makes him
the true pioneer of 3d gaming
he’s now attempting to push games into
yet another dimension by working on the
oculus rift virtual reality project
before we reveal our top pick here are
some honorable mentions

the world it’s the name of this man

of his accomplishments because he is the

contributions helped to revive and
essentially save the videogame industry
in the mid 1980s
