these women wowed us until the end of
the century kochu I’m a woman
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
counting down our picks for the top 10
era-defining actresses modern addition
for this list we’ve looked at actresses
that were especially successful and
influential within the modern era and it
means something for the purposes of our
countdown we are defining the modern era
as the years between 1970 and 2000 oh
god this is part of a series of videos
on Aaron defining actresses throughout
the ages but I know something of a woman
in a man’s profession
number 10 Nicole Kidman oh is just about
to go off duty this Australian actress
accelerated herself towards superstardom
during the 90s
starring in a string of movies that made
her a household name a role alongside
her husband-to-be Tom Cruise in Days of
Thunder could be considered her
breakthrough and I think he’s actually
standing before while her part in Batman
Forever earned her even greater
attention I thought your dreams might
need changing by the time she starred in
1999 Eyes Wide Shut cinema-goers
eyes were very much open for Kidman she
had become a queen of the silver screen
let’s smile you spout crap
he finds me number nine Jane Fonda
you’re not gonna get hung up on me are
you growing up within one of Hollywood’s
greatest ever acting dynasties Jane
Fonda had expectations to meet and boy
did she manage to do that take during
the 70s and 80s especially we were all
fond of Fonda she picked up her first
Academy Award in 71 for a provocative
role include what heart is there in that
before scooping her second statuette in
78 for coming home do you remember me
Stanley and iris proved to be her final
feature for 15 years in 1990 but by then
her work as an era definer was done
number 8 Judi Dench I’ve read the brief
one of the greatest British actresses to
have ever lived Judi Dench is a modern
moviemaking marvel yes the illusion is
remarkable she began her career acting
out the classics on stage garnering a
certain sophistication which she took
into her cinema work as well because if
I want sarcasm mr. Tedder I talk to my
children thank you very much a
supporting role in a room with a view is
a particular highlight two lone females
in an unknown City
now that’s an i-cord irritation well
she’ll always be known as em to any
James Bond buff
good evening ham Prime Minister’s
waiting for an update her Oscar came in
98 for a portrayal of Elizabeth the
first and Shakespeare in Love an
appropriate role for acting royalty I
bear witness to the wager and will be
the judge of it as occasion arises
number seven Angelica Houston what’s for
you
another diamond nestled within an acting
dynasty Angelica Houston is the third
generation of Academy Award winners
within her family I heard that before
a supporting role in Prizzi’s honor
earned her the Oscar and she would also
receive consecutive nominations in 89
and 94 enemies a love story and The
Grifters who come to age what are you
doing a very versatile performer Houston
is also a children’s favorite her
performance as Roald Dahl’s Grand High
Witch was terrifically terrifying and
another effort of the era
number six Sigourney Weaver we have been
here for three and a half hours how many
different ways do you want me to tell
the same story to be considered an era
defining actress it would help if you
starred in an ear at defining film
Sigourney Weaver certainly did that puts
her interested in this the Alien
franchise changed science fiction
filmmaking forever and we were wound up
with a Hollywood high profile as out of
this world as her character that’s not
all by no means a one-hit wonder however
Weaver also impressed as Dana Barrett in
ghostbusters what a lovely scene where
she must have and Dian Fossey in
gorillas in the mist
from spaceships to spirits to
Silverbacks Sigourney made great movie
after great movie after great movie get
away from her you bitch number five
Diane Keaton well
okay our next leading lady seemed a
little unconventional at times but it’s
unsurprising that she garnered so much
success okay come on Diane Keaton is
perhaps most well known for the work she
did under Woody Allen’s direction during
the 70s starring in hit films such as
played against am and sleeper is this
the best they could offer before winning
an Oscar for any haul I got to sing
tomorrow night so I have to rest my
voice the fact that her breakthrough
came with a role in The Godfather is
often forgotten which is a testament to
just how good she really was
number four Emma Thompson indeed my lord
back to Britain with our next entry and
to a lady that can make us laugh just as
much as make us cry just as much as make
us do anything really Papa me I was born
to speak Alma and no matter Emma
Thompson is one of the most impressive
all-around actresses in history long
much ado about nothing proved she had
much of something while Howards End won
her an Academy Award tonight with your
permission yes she would like to sleep
at Howards End not bad for a girl who
started off her career goofing around in
Cambridge University’s famous footlights
troupe not bad at all dude dude
number three Jodie Foster Deshmukh with
you next an actress who’s been in the
public eye for most of her life and has
deserved every ounce of admiration
that’s been given her it’s her 1976 was
the year that really put Jodie Foster at
the forefront of our minds as she
starred in Bugsy Malone and was Oscar
nominated for her role as an underage
prostitute in taxi driver see that guy
over there
you go talk to him his name is Matthew
I’ll be over there wait
since then success has blown freely
similarly intense parts in the accused
and the Silence of the Lambs have
especially ensured that her mantelpiece
is aching with awards do you think I I
asked for that is that what you think
number two Julia Roberts great let’s get
started the chick flick is perhaps one
of cinema’s most prolific genres in the
21st century and Julia Roberts is one of
the major reasons for that why is that
Robert Slade some serious foundations
for the format during the 80s and 90s
and is rightly thought of as one of the
most talented actresses of her
generation the fame thing isn’t really
real you know pretty woman has become an
iconic film and Notting Hill was richly
received and don’t forget I’m also just
a girl more than just a rom-com her
though her Academy Award for Erin
Brokovich in 2000 was long long overdue
anything less than that is a waste of
our time before we unveil our top pick
here are some honorable mentions I’m
sorry Harry
I know it’s new usually I know you’re
feeling lonely but you just can’t show
up here tell me you love me and expect
that to make everything all right for
you I’m getting ready to watch a video

like scary
uh-huh what are you doing nothing
you were masturbating yes you are
I’ve never seen anybody killed before
except you know sometimes you pass on
the freeway you see a couple of people
do let’s go to your lives meow
number one Meryl Streep to edge out our
other actresses to this top spot you
have to be something seriously special
and Meryl Streep is just that my kid
took a painting to myself with three
Academy Awards to her name and a record
19 nominations as well as eight Golden
Globes and an incredible twenty nine
nominations the statistics definitely do
not lie I’m going to run for leader
party Kramer vs Kramer Sophie’s Choice
and the Iron Lady brought the most
success but the street back catalog is
full of filmic victories please don’t
fuss an inspirational era definer she’s
one of the best the industry has ever
seen those who would say hold back there
are those who would make us retreat but
we shall never give in to them
we shall never waver not for a second
