these small screen characters showed
true courage your fire is this because
I’m a LESBIAN welcome to watchmojo.com
and today we’re counting down our picks
for the top ten coming out of the closet
TV scenes her name’s Veronica
but Veronica’s a girl’s name did you
know that I’m marrying a woman um I’m
gay for this list we ranked the best and
most memorable scenes on TV where a
character came out of the closet about
his or her sexuality yeah I’m gay I just
don’t usually say it like that how do
you usually say it I don’t usually say
it as usual we are limiting it to one
per series okay don’t act like you
didn’t have to explain that cuz I mean
no sense at all number 10 Callie Torres
Grey’s Anatomy
dad this is Arizona Robbins this is home
dating now while this medical drama has
plenty of happy moments things aren’t
all good all the time and the admission
of this orthopedic surgeons true
sexuality to her father certainly wasn’t
you’ll fly home with me today and I’ll
talk to the chief explained the
circumstances no no dad no I’m not
moving back home don’t worry
everything’s gonna be okay everything is
oh okay we first witnessed her bisexual
interest in her relationship with
cardiothoracic surgeon Erica Hahn
she later starts dating Arizona Robbins
and although the two hit it off
Callie’s declaration of their
relationship to mr. Torres strains
things between father and child if he
can accept me for who I am I come off as
shown in sweet surrender he’s not the
most understanding type and his strict
Catholicism means he does not take the
news well but it’s still a memorable
episode nonetheless I mean you’re
supposed to love me no matter what
that’s what a parent does number nine
Justin Suarez Ugly Betty I get it it’s
okay but you know if I do go no one
would have to know anything although
this character often seemed
stereotypically gay due to his interest
in fashion and Broadway it took him
nearly four full seasons of the show for
him to finally tell his family we told
him to come here after class and when he
walks him we’re all gonna shout we know
you’re gay and that’s okay he has a gay
mentor in mark but he still can’t quite
bring himself to tell all you don’t have
to say a word until you’re ready once he
decides it’s time though he reveals the
truth in moving fashion by taking the
dance floor with his boyfriend Austin at
his mother’s wedding
number eight Mickey Milkovich shameless
I understand better than anyone that
you’re afraid of your father we have
your wife you’re afraid to be me ma some
choose to come out quietly but others
are much more aggressive about it in
this character from the American remake
of the British series shameless is
certainly in the latter camp he keeps
his relationship with Ian secret for a
long time in large part due to his
insane father Terry listen mimic their
dad some evil psychotic prick you’re
just gonna let him ruin your life oh the
cop in season 3 the senior Milkovich
caught his son having sex with in and
forced Mickey to sleep with and marry a
prostitute
things come to a head during the next
season though when pressure from his
wife and Ian leads Mickey to tell the
truth to everyone attending his son’s
christening at a local bar like
everybody’s attention please
ash want everybody here to know I’m
fucking gay the results are catastrophic
especially considering the violent and
homophobic tere is in attendance number
seven max bloom happy endings to sluts
and a Nazi what do you into max uh dudes
I’m into guys what we say luckily for
this character the conclusion to him
coming out to his folks was exactly the
name of the sitcom in which he’s
featured sweetheart II never need to be
scared to tell us anything what matters
to us is that you’re happy and that
you’re surrounded by people who love you
although max bloom appeared comfortable
with a sexuality from the minute we met
him he’d yet to tell his parents at the
beginning of the first season in fact he
even told them that the gay porn under
his mattress belonged to his buddy Dave
look in college my parents got my corner
Neath my mattress and I panicked I said
it was yours why would my porn be under
your mattress I panicked again and I
said that used to lie in my bed and were
obsessed with me you are not good under
pressure don’t you think I know that
thankfully mr. and mrs. bloom end up
being a okay with everything and they
even tried to set their son up with some
of their friends gay sons oh you know
who’s gay is Rhoda Kaplan son and he
owns a discotheque oh and Irma Schaefer
son just came out he has three kids
Howie
we’d have grandchildren number six Jack
McPhee Dawson’s Creek
are you gay jack
would you care that is not an answer
even if it weren’t an amazing scene in
and of itself we’d still pretty much
have to include this character on our
list because he broke ground by taking
part in the first gay male kiss aired on
u.s. network TV this before that though
Jack McPhee reveals his sexuality to his
father and friends and it’s an
especially poignant moment considering
his budding romance with Joey ask me the
question again ask me if I’m gay
unfortunately mr. McPhee denies the
truth making for a sad but moving scene
of television you are not gay yes I am
you know it number five Emily fields
Pretty Little Liars okay
I’m gay next on our list sadly is
another unhappy coming out after the
teenage swimmer Emily fields tells her
father the truth he tells her mother who
doesn’t take the news so well Oh
fixin this is not like buying of braces
this is who she is
luckily for Emily her friends are quite
a bit more supportive but it’s not until
mrs. fields gets her daughter’s
girlfriend Maya out of the picture in a
later episode that she can begin to
accept Emily for who she is you’re no
longer allowed to see her you can’t do
that
watch me this doesn’t change the way I
feel about her however it’s the coming
out episode we’re concerned with here
and while we feel bad for Emily in
moments later we certainly admire her
I’m not okay with it
the whole thing makes me sick to my
style number four Willow Rosenberg Buffy
the Vampire Slayer
it’s complicated because it Tara
this Scooby gang member was a longtime
fan favorite on the show and we
appreciated her even more for her
relationship with Tara you have to if
the person you love I am although she
previously dates the werewolf Oz she
eventually Falls for Tara forming one of
the first all-female couples on American
TV I feel horrible that everything I put
you through and I’m gonna make it up to
standing right now as she makes clear to
Buffy when she comes out to her though
she’s just in love with this person and
doesn’t identify as a lesbian and this
makes her admission all the more
powerful I don’t know what to do I I
wanna know I don’t do it makes you happy
number three
Oscar Martinez the office know that is
the fun of this place I call everybody
faggy why would anyone find that
offensive Michael Scott has never been
the most politically correct guy and his
treatment of this character didn’t help
his reputation okay I think that’s where
just like if he’s lame or something like
that
that’s what faggy means no not really Oh
after calling Oscar faggy Michael then
apologizes to him in front of everyone
ensuring that the accountant sexuality
is now public information Oscar why
don’t you take this opportunity to
officially come out to everybody here
however you want to do it go ahead
Sandow the boss is later kissing up
Oscar in an attempt to fix things
reveals Michaels true stupidity but it
also makes for a hilarious scene things
work out just fine for Oscar though
since he’s offered three months of paid
vacation and the company car so that he
doesn’t sue Dunder Mifflin for
everything that’s happened all I had to
do was sign something saying I
wan-soo Gill and I are going to Europe
kids sometimes it pays to be gay
number two Kurt Hummel Glee dad I have
something that I want to say although
this character’s father doesn’t
completely accept his coming out this
fact makes the scene from Glee no less
powerful hmm what I am is okay as mr.
Hummel explains he never doubted his son
sexuality due to Kurt’s proclivity
towards feminine clothing but he still
can’t quite wrap his head around the
idea I know really I’m known since you
were three all you want for your
birthday was a pair of sensible heels
despite this he’s clearly trying which
makes for a moving scene I guess I’m not
totally in love with the idea but if
that’s who you are
nothing I can do about it I love you
just as much even better
show creator Ryan Murphy took the scene
from his life thus explaining its
realistic feel you sure right yet I’m
sure I’m just tech before we unveil our
number one pick here are some honorable
mentions
you
from Jude and I’m gay you know I don’t
think I can keep doing this I know we
all have to promise
because I am super gay for you yes Roxy
is gay at least she was when we were
together or in school yes oh you heard
rumors no I have first-hand knowledge
I’m gay good
so you anything straight up do you like
dudes
yes I do one in particular
well somebody owes me money number one
Ellen Morgan
Ellen so that’s basically it you know no
no major problems nothing pressing what
kind of vibe do you get from me we had
to give this scene the top spot on our
list due to its awesome real-life
parallels actress and comedian Ellen
DeGeneres came out publicly to Oprah on
her talk show and this was followed the
same day by her character coming out on
her sitcom to her therapist played by
you guessed it Oprah herself has there
ever been anyone you felt you clicked
with and what was his name Susan given
the year of its broadcast the episode
set a powerful precedent for LGBT
characters on TV that would soon be
matched as we’ve seen Susan I’m gay
still Ellen’s frankness and self comfort
make this scene the gold standard of
them all well I’m sorry I don’t know
what else to do I was scared I was
ashamed and now that it’s out you know
what it’s funny do you agree with our
list I did that double spit-take to
illustrate how insane you sound right
now what coming out of the closet TV
scene inspired you I can’t imagine why
everyone thinks you’re the sweet one for
more revealing top 10s published every
