watchmojo.com and today we’re counting
down our picks for the top 10
Christopher Nolan characters it’s not
who I am underneath but what I do

look at the most interesting original
and memorable characters as well as
existing character interpretations from
all Christopher Nolan’s films we will be
talking about these characters at length
so this is your spoiler alert know you
don’t really wanna know number 10
Alfred Pennyworth the Dark Knight
trilogy some men just want to watch the
world burn Michael Caine has become a
regular in Nolan’s work but it’s his
role as Alfred Pennyworth that truly
takes the cake why do we fall
so don’t we had love to make ourselves
up every Batman film is essentially
about the conflict between our masked
hero and a villain who threatens Gotham
City
the Caped Crusader’s story would be far
from complete however without his
so-called Butler enjoy most away taken
they’ll hate you for it
but that’s the point of Batman serving
as his servant advisor and parental
figure mr. pennyworth holds together
both Bruce Wayne’s house and his mental
state I suppose you’re gonna lock me up
as well as your accomplice accomplice
I’m gonna tell them the whole thing was
your idea number 9
Olivia wenscombe The Prestige same man
he wears padded gloves sides as damaged
fingers but if you look closely you can
tell
Olivia pours even more intrigued into an
amazing rivalry and stands at the center
of two magic acts pretty assistant is
most effective foam restoration after
the death of his wife Hugh Jackman’s
Robert Angiers hires the beautiful
Olivia as she is slim enough to fit into
the compartments he’s already built a
point lead estranged if you doubt fate
used by Robert in a power play that
ultimately backfires she’s the one who
gives him his enemy’s diary a move that
would ultimately be his undoing the
great Dan Tony the blind fool his
notebook like another supporting
character in the film Nikola Tesla she
does not get the same amount of
attention as the two leads but they both
steal our attention I’ll let people know
it can be so much more than ears I can
show you how number eight
Moll Cobb inception after you watch the
trailer for inception it’s the
astounding effects an incredible action
that may get you into the theater but
it’s a characters and performances that
keep you watching and coming back for
more
tell me
did the chicken miss me as the wife of
the film’s lead who went too deep and
could no longer accept the true world
and thus had to face deadly consequences
Maul served as a warning of what could
go wrong my dreams were still together
she even becomes the heart of the sci-fi
thriller despite the fact that she’s no
longer living so it’s truly devastating
to find out how she died
we’re going home to I real changing no
no no no while you listen to me alright
and you feel the weight of it through
every subsequent scene the idea that
caused you to question your reality came
from me number seven Eames inception
what you have to do is start at the
absolute basic which is what the
relationship with the father played by
the extraordinarily talented Tom Hardy
Eames is the expert forger of the group
in the dreams where a lot of the movie
takes place he perfectly impersonates
others an hour I was supposed to have
all night to breakfast he and his cohort
Arthur are the glue that holds together
all of the plants and schemes the dream
team attempts to pull off hmm
also you’re still working with that
stick in the mud he is good at what he
does right oh it’s the best imagination
effortlessly charismatic team steals
almost every scene he’s in your
condescension as always as much
appreciated Arthur thank you our only
complaint about his role is that there
just isn’t enough of him mustn’t be
afraid to dream a little bigger darling
number six
Walter Finch insomnia – sleep well
it’s impressive just how good Robin
Williams was at being bad in this
psychological thriller considering it
was only one of the few times the
esteemed and hilarious actor played a
villain during his career
I’m not who you think I am no a crime
writer who became every bit as dark as
his characters Finch beats a woman he
was interested in to death and then
cleans her body of any trace of him
working on a new book mr. Finch have you
read any of my books I haven’t his
career as a crime writer provides him
with enough experience to allow him to
stay one step ahead of the police
talk about a truly fearsome foe I know
how easy it is to kill somebody at
ultimate Apple it doesn’t exist outside
our minds number five Bruce Wayne /
Batman The Dark Knight trilogy
means to fight injustice to turn fear
against some suppressors
the story of Bruce Wayne is known far
and wide a child whose parents are
killed in front of them he becomes a man
bent on protecting the world from
similar criminals as a man of flesh and
blood I can be ignored I can be
destroyed but as a symbol
it’s a symbol I can be incorruptible but
just because we know the story doesn’t
mean we won’t be captivated by a time
and time again if put in the hands of a
great actor director combo as proof we
present Christian Bale’s portrayal of
Bruce Wayne to be you standing by my
side saving the world understanding
right belong between you and the people
of Gotham
turning his body into a lean mean
crime-fighting machine and peeling back
Batman’s many layers Bale delivered
arguably the most complete and darkest
depiction of the Dark Knight ever put on
screen I never knew I don’t know I swear
I swear to me number four Joseph coupe
Cooper
interstellar Cooper
I can’t tell you anymore unless you
agree to pilot this craft a widowed
father who accepts a mission to space in
an attempt to save humanity coop serves
as the hero of interstellar who explores
wrong mission airboat although we can
tell he’s excited to go on the adventure
he’s always felt he was destined for
it’s the moments of regret he
experiences that earned him a place on
our list
don’t don’t mind don’t make me leave
like this come on Murph when he watches
several years of missed video
communications from his children and
discovers that all his decisions has
taken on them his silent tears
overshadow all of the movies awesome
action and cement his place as one of
Nolan’s most unforgettable characters
number three Leonard
memento you don’t even know who you love
yes I do I don’t have amnesia
I remember everything right up until the
incident I am Leonard Shelby I am from
San Francisco that’s who you were a man
that has lost the ability to make new
memories following a physical
altercation
Leonard Shelby spends his days waking up
in unknown situations again and again
it’s my memory amnesia
no no no it’s different from that I have
no short-term memory I know who I am I
know all about myself I just since my
injury I can’t make new memories unlike
the majority of us who would probably
spend our remaining days trying to find
a situation that makes us comfortable
and diminishes each new shock Leonard
becomes sort of a detective write
yourself notes and where you put your
notes that also becomes really important
driven to find his wife’s murderer he
tattoos his body leaves himself copious
notes and always remembers the story of
Sammy Jenkins in an effort to get his
man remember Sammy Gannicus memento is a
film that’s told in a manner that allows
us to feel his confusion enabling
Leonard to haunt you
for days you know the truth about my
condition officer you don’t know
anything
sheíll angry you don’t know why number
two Dom Cobb inception what is the most
resilient parasite bacteria a virus
Dominic Cobb comes off as slick and
stylish at first glance but all that
belies his inner sorrow he’s haunted by
the death of his wife and his inability
to be involved in the lives of his
children see I thought about calling out
to them so they turn and smile and I can
see those those beautiful faces of
theirs but it’s all too late
although inception has many compelling
characters it would all fall apart
without somebody to provide a strong
emotional core luckily for the film and
its many fans Leonardo DiCaprio is one
of the greatest actors of this or any
generation just a shade you’re just a
shade of my real wife or the best I can
do
I’m sorry it just not good enough he
holds a narrative together with a
multi-layered performance that feels
entirely human before we reveal our top
pick here are a few honorable mentions
cousins because he’s dangerous dangerous
how how dangerous you keep on saying
he’s dangerous you never want you never
explained to me why why you’re so afraid
of him marry me did you love her sure
she was nice she was nice
Wow well that makes me all soft inside
Malloy what you’re my son you’re just
one man no we’re – we I did exactly what
you told me to do I went to Dodd and I
told them that I didn’t have any of
Jimmy’s money or the drugs look at the
man this is the truth this is a
performance why this is why no one can
detectives
total devotion to a jar not
self-sacrifice everybody good
plenty of slaves for my robot colony I
gave him a humor setting so he’d fit in
better with his unit thinks it relaxes
us a giant sarcastic robot number one
the Joker the Dark Knight I believe
whatever doesn’t kill you simply makes
him a stranger it’s hard to believe
there was a time when fans were up in
arms about the casting of Heath Ledger
as the Joker I thought my jokes were bad
taking one of popular cultures greatest
villains to a whole new level Nolan and
Ledger’s interpretation of the Joker
perfectly rides the blade of insanity he
turns to me and he said why so serious
although the trilogy’s other villains
like Ra’s al Ghul to face and the
intimidating bane are great there’s no
question about who reign supreme in
Batman’s rogues gallery this town
I’m gonna give it known
incredibly menacing the Joker is the
Clown Prince of Crime and thanks to the
chaos he causes we love every single
second he’s on screen in what I am I’m a
dog chasing cars I wouldn’t know what to
do with one if I caught it you know I
just do things so do you agree with our
list watch out sir who’s your favorite
