Top 10 Biggest Cliches in Hip Hop and Rap Music

I am the greatest Oh Mike check
WatchMojo all up in this list five one
four represent this is mine
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’ll
be counting down our picks for the top
ten
rap song cliches for this list
we’ll be looking at overused elements in
rap songs and videos this list will only
look at songs which are primarily rap or
hip-hop and not pop songs where a singer
or collaborator raps of verse number 10
introducing themselves at the beginning
of a song or verse Matt Campbell in the
house um okay anyway mentioning your
name at the beginning of the song is
something most rappers new school or old
are guilty of while it can be annoying
it has cultural roots in the beginnings
of hip-hop back then it was helpful to
give lesser-known rappers more
recognition to introduce
nowadays a quick Google search can give
us the info we want but there was a time
when rappers had to verbally stamp their
property so next time you hear a rapper
needlessly yelling their own name think
of it as a throwback to the old school
cuz I’m snoop doggy doggy
mr. Bluff yup
where you at King scrap fillet so I know
they got you cap to stay on hard from
getting your old dogs the hoods you
threw up with number nine this is Lily
from respect your way so now it’s time
for the doctor to check your way disses
and other insults have always been found
in rap songs it is usually taken quite
seriously if a rapper this is another
rapper in just a few bars but there have
been entire track solely created to rain
down disrespect on other artists you a
fan a phony or fake a pussy a stain I
still with your ass you 36 in the karate
class dissing zorgons are most likely
from the rap battle culture which was
used to entertain but over the years
dissing has escalated and has even led
to violence first off you’re bitching to
click you claim westside when we walk on
me quickly game you claim to be a player
but up show why we put some bad boy for
life other times though dissing is used
as a tool to gain more popularity and
become more recognized in the hip-hop
world I don’t know if do a red arrow and
do the sick shit all right in 2 to 6
with number 8 air horn and gunshots
the appeal of airhorns is pretty easy to
get your head around they make you feel
like you’re partying in a giant Stadium
but God do they get annoying if overused
it works well in reggae and dancehall
music where it originated but they
shouldn’t be forced into rap beats hop
in Eddy bow and go bball 6 the net
pocket is so much flour gettin fresh
gunshots are another cliche that seems
to be widespread and rap tracks they do
add to the imagery of the lyrics but can
get stale and the track from the song
and if I die before y’all a boom drop a
whole background effects are cool and
all but they’re best used in moderation
there they go back in stadiums as shady
sit disco nuts they go macadamia nig no
so ballistic whoa
number 7 product placements so is this a
song or an advertisement it’s hard not
to cringe when you hear or see
strategically placed brands and movies
and it’s no different in rap imagine
Britney Spears singing bout a Bentley
she owns or a garage band writing about
Gucci bags it is clear most rappers do
it to get something out of the company
like nelly getting his own shoe line
after Air Force Ones became popular
Busta Rhymes as past the core Voisine
part 2 also drove up sales of the liquor
leading to massive profits for the
parent company which in turn did
business with Busta’s enterprise if
you’re going to sell out at least
promote your own brand
number six add lives we all respect the
time-honored art of freestyling but on
the opposite side of the improv line we
have yelps yips and other general noises
which are used as filler interestingly
enough over time a lot of these ad-libs
became signatures for more popular
artists DMX’s dog growls and barks fit
well with his natural voice and the
image he is portraying a lot of ad-libs
are just laughter but they become as
recognizable as if the rapper yelled out
their own name as the case with Jadakiss
and Wiz Khalifa to the max yo sleek some
have become truly unique like Birdman’s
pigeon sounds what happens today boy but
others can get annoying if used too
often just putting that out there
Little John
yeah
swimming in women with their own condom
mini number 5
lyrics always about money’s about the
Benjamins one this is another cliche
that rappers are allowed to get away
with whether true or not the narrative
most rappers try to portray is that they
started with nothing and worked hard and
hustled until they made it rich this
makes flaunting wealth and throwing cash
money into our faces more acceptable
it helps us live out the fantasies we
probably won’t be able to experience a
big Aranea he’d never make a ring like
southern california luxury cars mansions
an unfathomable amounts of bling might
make listeners jealous but other than
rap where else are you going to be able
to hear a song about just being rich why
you all in my ear talking a home number
for swearing get back you know don’t be
like that
oh hell yes swearing has been and raps
on since the beginning but has actually
declined in the new millennium cussing
at his peak during the gangster rap
years from the mid 1990s to early 2000s
ironically when rap came into the
mainstream the N word is the most used
profane word in rap but actually wasn’t
used that often when rap first began
fedia to the put on property deliberate
is a murder murder machine while cussing
might turn off some people sometimes it
is necessary to convey certain emotions
other times they are used as filler
words to help with the tempo or meter of
a verse
problem but even though they could be
replaced with less offensive words
cursing does help us notice a song as
well finding somebody raise you cry
alone bring a girl to the crib maybe
weakest out
number three songs about illegal
activity I’m in love with this bull bull
this rap cliche has been around since
the beginning of the genre and is still
used frequently not only do we see songs
with specifically reserved verses about
illegal activity there have been entire
songs written about certain prohibited
acts now I’m in the US making tales damn
it feels good to be a gangsta countless
verses and songs have been released
about selling drugs prostitution robbing
and even murder Gerber was making creamy
most of the time this blurs the line
between music and reality and the really
heavy songs can leave you wondering if
your favorite rapper actually used to be
involved in these questionable
activities as this risks influencing
younger and even adult audiences it’s
best this cliche finds itself locked up
soon
there’s no gonna sign open it no it’s
not a little friend if you let it move
fast I have to slow down pizzicato
number two bitches and hos Oh bitch get
out the way
yeah ah the misogyny why is it that we
only hear rappers calling women bitch ho
or trick
why not lady fair maiden or respected
equal we’re still why do the women in
the video seemed to like it
it doesn’t provide the greatest of
influences and is entirely overused sure
most rappers are male so we are getting
their perspective but even female
rappers like Nicki Minaj use these words
because of the disrespect to an entire
gender this cliche makes our list before
we unveil our number one pick here are a
few honorable mentions we in the bed
line started from the bottom now we’re
here started from my dishes in your
pussy number one bragging and
braggadocio the back of the course a bit
more white this way to pump the back of
the club map it holds my cooch behar add
most of what we have on this list
together and we find a common theme
bragging a lot of rappers are modest in
person but while performing they can
come off a tad arrogant some of course
aren’t modest often my either um Kanye
and Kanye
Oh
funnily enough bragging and any other
genre of music could be seen as being in
bad taste but it is acceptable and even
expected hitch more BMX in billboard I
got a label deal in the mattress cook
I’m King push want that cash show off
those women for her to your past crimes
and even claim you’re the greatest it’s
all fair game I got so many to the
vampire down in al-anbiya Jeff with
light butter still big campus while
bragging can get old it will most likely
always have a place in rack be king
think not why be a king when you can be
a grown so do you agree with our list
what are some other rap cliches you can
think of for more hip-hop and top 10s
