Top 10 Best Games of 2015 – DECONSTRUCTED Ep. 5

this episode of deconstructed is brought
to you by the Nvidia shield Android TV
welcome to deconstructed where we take
an old top ten list and break it down
entry by entry to try to figure out why
things placed where they did today we’re
probably doing the newest list we’ve
ever deconstructed the top 10 games of
2015 will also be playing a few of these
games because playing games is fun and
life is short let’s meet the panel we
got Mike on the end hey Andrew in the
middle like he always is and Dave next
to me I oh I am your host Dan let’s
start this off with a comment okay so
this list kicked off at number 10 with
rise of the Tomb Raider I really wanted
to play rise of the Tomb Raider but
unfortunately it was a get Xbox one
exclusive and I don’t own an Xbox one
well ironically it’s the uncharted 2
holdover people waiting for Uncharted
and it’s also an Xbox exclusive
Uncharted 4 now until a definitive
edition makes its way to the other
consoles now this one just barely egged
onto the list at number 10 now I know we
had a few other candidates for that spot
yeah the other two candidates that were
dying the number 10 spot were a rocket
League and ablate Chronicles X this one
it just made it onto the list just ahead
of those two more specifically rocket
League it was just a much more well
refined refined refined and more they
knew what it wanted to do and it set out
to do it and it achieved it it didn’t
push the genre it didn’t do anything
crazy new it gave us like I said an
uncharted experience but he did it
really well and it is one of those must
play games of the year that’s why we
couldn’t put it higher it just didn’t it
wasn’t reinventing the wheel it was just
sort of polishing it all right so we got
another comment to bring us into number
9 which was the tune actually it’s two
comments but you’ll see they’re related
a bunch of vowels over here said
splatoon in splatoon I’m done and gwon
Luka Isabela said clicked off the video
after seeing splatoon so it seems that
some people are not so happy about
having split tuna on the list I’m
willing to bet the people that that say
that it should be on the listing name
implie splatoon it’s like don’t knock it
till you try it guys yeah undertale
syndrome as we call it pretty much yeah
I’ll talk about that later what about
you guys number it’s only at number nine
it’s not
we put it at number one or anything like
that what made it so good was that it’s
really mixed up the competitive shooter
like instead of just being a bunch of
guys with sort of modern ish weapons and
jet packs running around it really put a
huge twist on the whole genre and showed
that the competitive shooter can still
be new and fresh Nintendo is like
constantly supported the game like ever
since it relates like when it came out
it was pretty short it was I only have
like five Maps but now it’s got like
sixteen maps well let me ask you that’s
that like we were we spoke a bit when we
were ranking the list how like it was
one of the best games for the Wii U now
the Wii U hasn’t had that many new games
this year especially not new notable
ones do you think we were a little bit
biased and put it on the list only
because it was a Wii U it was a goodwill
you exclusive no not at all no but I
mean regardless of the system it’s a
really fun experience it’s fresh and
what I really like is that it has the
same appeal for the young ones and for
the adults like it has that universal
appeal and you can’t say it’s dumbed
down for kids or it’s too kitty one of
the best ways a game can market itself
is to know its demographic and know what
it’s doing so and I think so too knows
that really well I think it does that
perfectly so number eight which we are
playing is Super Mario maker and we got
a little comment to kick us off firewall
1998 wonder what he was born says I knew
this list was bullshit when I saw Mario
maker was on it and jc3 wasn’t people
are bitching about cash grabs when Mario
maker is one of the most blatant
attempts to milk the franchise well he’s
not wrong but at the same time that
doesn’t mean it’s a bad game but he but
he is right I mean they are recycling or
they’re they’re dealing with nostalgia
here they’re really hinging on people’s
nostalgia so why do you think that this
is one of the best games of the year I
mean like I said it’s essentially for
old games – the content for me it’s
absolutely a game of the year this is
one of the most fun experiences I’ve had
it justifies having the Wii U absolutely
it justifies the game pad the whole
touch thing you can’t do it on any other
console and you need that to do this
there’s countless levels online and a
lot of them are frankly way more
creative than a lot of the stuff
Nintendo is able to do I personally like
I need a bit of structure I I like
that’s someone who is a game designer
has designed something and I can be that
and then I can measure my progress
against other people who have also
beaten it Andrew you’ve been real
quiet-like
well okay game of 2015
definitely no no definitely top-10
definitely belongs on list I understand
where the criticism comes from because
it’s weird that it’s a full-priced game
considering you have to make your own
content but the nostalgia is very very
strong I played this and I got really
excited when I finally unlocked like
Mario 3 in Super Mario World so let me
ask you this
you take away Mario you put some sort of
random new character in here would it be
anywhere near as fun definitely down but
it still deserves to be on it just
regardless yes because like there’s so
much power in an IP Star Wars
Battlefront if you take away the Star
Wars theme the crafts that I still kind
of liked it exactly so you know just let
people have their game so at number 7 we
had Arkham Knight the console version
now Oh Cody oh says I was really let
down by Arkham Knight maybe the previous
games built our expectations too high or
there was too much hype around it but
for the final Batman Arkham game to go
out like that made me feel pretty sad
there was not one memorable boss fight
and there was too much Batmobile usage
that was why when some of the issues I
had with Batman Arkham Knight it’s not a
bad game which is why it’s still on the
list it still look up some great selling
I kind of loved it I just loved the I
mean granted the Batmobile is something
I could sort of take it or leave it but
I kind of liked it I like the vaulting
out of it or jumping back in I think it
looked amazing call me shallow but it
just it really just looked like a
next-gen game and you know all the
things that I liked about the previous
games there or most of the things that I
liked we’re still there so I’m I’m cool
with it let’s be honest like after
Arkham Asylum and then Arkham City was
like wow like I need more and then you
got more and you’re like this is kind of
too much of the same with those extra
elements but and nothing super memorable
and a predictable twist I really do feel
the game’s struggle with their legacy
like it’s very hard for games to be
judged alone and not next to the games
that preceded it
in their series yeah so if like if this
had been the first game in the series it
would have absolutely blown us all out
of the water but because it was the
third or fourth game in this series our
expectations were just really really
high and that definitely heard it a
little bit number six we had Monster
Hunter 4 ultimate now I got two comments
to explain this a little bit here John
Bertrand says the only one I don’t agree
with here is Monster Hunter 4 ultimate
everyone forgot about it after it was
released and it’s definitely not the
best 3s game of the year I don’t know
what this guy’s talking about I don’t
know what else came out for the 3ds this
year that was better but schemes
fantastic I’ve only scratched the
surface with about 50 hours and I think
I have another comment to support my
opinion Janus H o W says I bought
Monster Hunter 4 ultimate on an impulse
I’ve now spent 1200 plus hours playing
it’s there’s a lot of content in this
game yeah this one is my personal choice
for a game of the year I love this game
so much I picked it up back in February
talks about more than 200 hours what
with the gameplay into it what I found
was the barriers you start up there’s
like a gajillion weapons to choose from
each one I you know for the tutorial
you’re playing the tutorial it doesn’t
really like you follow the arrows you go
fight like you start putting raptors and
a t-rex kind of thing I know that’s not
what they actually are because they
probably have a monster name right but
on the actual regular 3ds you don’t have
if you don’t the Circle Pad Pro which
you don’t for the excel you’re using a
virtual d-pad which is like super
annoying because you have to switch back
and forth from the buttons to that so
it’s kind of jarring when you’re moving
I have the game now and I loved it but I
wasn’t impressed with the demo I think
the only reason this game wouldn’t place
higher on our list this year is those
barriers of entry I think it’s it’s
tough to learn you got to spend two or
three hours just to figure out a weapon
that you want to use and then like the
menus are almost incomprehensible under
all that is probably one of my favorite
games this year I know it was your
favorite yeah but once you once you get
past that barrier of entry and it really
sucks you in like you can take this game
online play with other hunters you can
or play locally which is something
that’s a rarity these days the guys say
that everyone forgot about it but like I
still find low level games all the time
on it yeah I still find
find time for it especially on my way to
work cool all right moving on
I think our number 5 entry here
undertale is probably the most divisive
game we’re gonna discuss today and
probably the most divisive game of this
year and to exemplify that I got a few
comments blue sparkles PPG says no
undertale should be number one for
goodness sake
however ray Cardenas says undertale but
no halo 5 who the or making these lists
and Owen Hart he says I’ve never played
undertale the short clip i was the first
i’ve ever seen it i never heard of it
what was that mess looked like pure shit
who would play that i will just open up
by saying don’t judge a book by its
cover it makes you look like a dummy
dumb a top game doesn’t need to push the
pixels it doesn’t need to do all that
this one it gives you that Super NES era
graphics has so much humor it’s you
don’t know what to expect I think this
one really explores how RPGs work and it
kind of plays against your own
predetermined tropes about what to
expect in an RPG
yeah and it’s one of those games that
it’s written so well that you
automatically become invested in these
characters just by the way they talk and
by the way they act and what’s really
cool about this one is you could play
the whole game and not kill anyone like
you do a pacifist runner or you could
kill everything that you see do you
think it was just like it pushed its way
half way just on the strength of its of
its writing and all that but like we
still like couldn’t rate it higher just
because it’s not quite our type of game
yeah I wish it was a little higher but
yeah you can’t push those triple-a crazy
blockbusters out of the way that we’re
not only like well done but like push
the genre forward well again it’s also a
very tight list because like the ones
ahead of it we’re also really really
good games so next up is another game
that we’ve actually already discussed
here on be constructed or already played
it’s Metal Gear Solid 5 the phantom did
a little comment to kick us off here
before you begin I know you’re eager
Mike Lambert here says Mel Gear Solid 5
off Konami
love you Kojima yeah Metal Gear Solid 5
left me with very split emotions once
I’d finished buying it because it’s a
fantastic game it the gameplay is just
so solid certifying it gives you
multiple ways to approach your your
objective but it’s not finished
there was tons of spots where I was just
like man this said this could use a
little a little beefing up but as goofy
as the story is I don’t think that
that’s that much of a detriment because
it’s nuts
but the game is just really really fun
any transitions into an open world
phenomenally well and that’s something
that a lot of games are struggling to do
I have no problem with the goofiness but
please finish the story like it’s it’s
not that it’s wacky it’s that it’s
unfinished and then you say it
transitions well into an open world I
agree with that except the open world
itself there’s not a lot in it if the
game wasn’t open well do you think it
would still be as good as it is I still
think it it was definitely a step in the
right direction it’s just like a step
that they have to keep on walking with
so number three is fallout 4 which we
are playing from the couch because it
video is nice enough to lend us this
fancy new shield which allows us to
stream from our gaming PC which is
actually in another room and record the
footage so convenient anyway we got some
comments here that talked about fallout
4 Sandeep’s Angelle says all at four for
me was disappointing compared to the
previous fallout like some of the new
features but the I guess he means I like
some of the new features but the game
won’t be good until they release all
DLCs this was my personal favorite game
of the year even though there are some
other games that deserve to be higher on
the list like this but this game just
absolutely captivated me it was just so
much freaking fun the gameplay loop is
brilliant because of the crafting system
you’re always like lusting to go out and
get more stuff and then you come back
and you bring the stuff back and then
you make some loot with it but you just
need a little bit more adhesive so you
go out to get more stuff and like the
loop is really no there’s definitely not
a reason to scrounge around like in
fallout 3 and even in you know Skyrim
oblivion every single object you can
pick up every fork every basket or
whatever but there’s no reason to
there’s no groom dungeon that you need
all your brooms for whereas in this game
you know there’s a reason to pick up the
plastic in the lead and the steal and
then we touched upon earlier when we
were talking about Arkham Knight how if
it was the first game in the series it
would have been amazing because everyone
was just like well you know they don’t
have the Arthur
elements of the previous games they they
have the Jake eNOS that the other game
still had they haven’t fixed it yet I
think every legitimate criticism against
this game stemmed from people’s
expectations from the game that came
before I just want to say yeah the
expectations were super high some people
are complaining that it didn’t push the
graphics as much as they wanted but I
mean that wasn’t from the beginning the
developer even said where it’s not about
pushing the graphics like to new
extremes it’s about doubling down on all
the things everybody loves I do feel
like the the dialog trait could have
been much better than it was like it was
so a bridge like you sometimes you
didn’t realize why your character was
saying like when my 10 miles liked it I
accidentally convinced another character
to commit suicide I was like oh shit no
no no no no don’t do that
but like despite its shortcomings I
still think it’s fantastic and and I
think we acknowledge the shortcomings by
not making a game in a year I fully
agree like I know people who are gonna
end up on the side of a milk carton for
disappearing because they’re just this
is their life now anyway I’d love to
just talk about fallout forever but we
got a move on number 2 almost at the end
now we have blood-borne so starting it
off with the comments we got it’s Jordan
blood-borne and pretty much every Dark
Souls game are so overrated
literally I think people get peer
pressured into playing the game because
try-hards say they’re fun because they
are difficult and then they act like
it’s fun to hit hit no I took me a while
to start playing the souls game because
I was like oh this is only gonna be fun
because it’s hard but then when you do
try the game you’re like it’s
challenging but the challenge is like it
doesn’t it’s not cheap it’s an enormous
amount of fun and the challenge is only
one aspect of what makes those games so
freakin good and blood-borne is you know
the culmination of everything they’ve
built so far into their best games so
far yeah it’s really good the atmosphere
is fantastic as well like they the
lighting is brilliant the the way they
are the villagers call out to you it
really sets you into the into the this I
come in with the world’s coal but it’s
so eerie and and it’s it’s just
fantastic I think it would have been an
easy choice for number one for it not
for our number one choice which leads
into so number one
the witcher 3 wild hunt this was
definitely my personal game of the yeren
we were talking before about how there
were shortcomings in Fallout 4 and Metal
Gear Solid and we also mentioned that
like you know for a game that’s got to
be the game of the year you shouldn’t be
left wanting in any area and I really
feel that the witcher 3 sort of covers
up the shortcomings that both of those
games had if you’re talking about maybe
like the emptiness of the open-world in
Metal Gear Solid this games got that
you’re talking about the story
shortcomings in both of those games this
game has got that like I just think that
like there really was no area where it
really needed to be strengthened I know
people had issues with combat and stuff
like that but I don’t really think that
carries a lot of weight
I think the combat it did what it needed
to do it was and it was really engaging
at the same time well I find really
interesting is yeah it started off as
fantasy novels actually ladies it’s
other than people think it’s from the
eighties from 86 it was a Polish fantasy
series there’s tons of books and to me
Lord of rings is for film from the
novels then you’ve got Game of Thrones
to television this is that equivalent
for video games what’s almost most
remarkable is that they can take
something that’s really obscure like
polish fantasy novels and then turn it
into something that’s like a worldwide
success as a game that defines like next
generation not just graphics but
gameplay story this is the game I feel
like best defines next-gen it’s the one
that said the will set the standards for
that for other games to come with this
generation it’s just that good it takes
all the boxes it’s it’s hard to find
fault with this game that’s that’s the
beauty of it that’s why it’s number one
I think that’s a better way to end it
than I could have thought up so thank
you David well this concludes this
