anime is a gorgeous medium and the
fusion of anime style animation and
storytelling with Western themes is a
match made in heaven
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’ll
be counting down our picks for the top
10 anime influenced animated shows sorry
no prize for second place yeah
for this list we’re taking a look at
animated programs created outside of
Japan but with the visual style story or
tone inspired by anime this naturally
excludes any and all anime native to
Japan as well as Japanese animated
features like the Studio Ghibli films
there’s no work for you here got it
try somewhere else number 10
Star Wars Clone Wars
long before anime was a mainstream term
Japanese cinema was already inspiring
the legendary George Lucas fittingly
anime played a huge hand in shaping this
2d animated series while art direction
stays true to the look of Star Wars much
of the imagery is also reminiscent of
Akira or Neon Genesis Evangelion part
we’re being jammed we have no
communication action is played out in
that familiar anime style of quick cuts
with minimal animated shots its emphasis
on visual storytelling over corny
dialogue is an added bonus
impressive most impressive yes I promise
that’s it laughs number nine Jackie Chan
adventures given Jackie Chan’s
propensity for over-the-top action and
mayhem it’s not surprising that the
cartoon series Jackie Chan adventures is
a perfect fit for the anime style what
is surprising however is how fun Jackie
Chan adventures truly is the freedom to
experiment and have fun with the medium
goes a long way with Jackie taking on
everything from demons to dragons while
performing stunts worthy of the
real-life Chan himself
ah in what could have been a gimmick
cashing in on Jackie Chan’s brand name
the show turned out to be full of humor
adventure and culture with an animation
style that really made it stand out come
and get it
number 8 Kim Possible when you think of
energetic over-the-top action mixed with
high school drama you’re probably
thinking of anime it only makes sense
then that Kim Possible a cartoon about a
crime-fighting high-school student is
gonna have anime influences never be
normal that’s the Ron stoppable motto
the parallels between this hit Disney
show and anime are right out there in
the open especially when considering its
charismatic schoolgirl lead you should
have stuck to babysitting
what made you think an ordinary teenager
could possibly defeat me from airing
when most women in action shows were
supporting characters Kim Possible was a
strong independent heroine helping
Western culture tear down a couple of
gender barriers
number seven over the garden wall by the
mill blood of moon all that was lost is
revealed
over the garden wall borrows elements
from a variety of classic stories like
the Grimm’s fairy tales and the wizard
bombs the anime influence is also
prevalent throughout the miniseries
particularly in terms of its bizarre
characters and otherworldly atmosphere
sometimes creepy sometimes funny and
always unique it draws on the lines of
miyazaki spirited away
beware fear no fear the Beast and may
this woods you can like spirited away
over the garden wall is a new entry in
popular culture but the story feels as
if it’s been around for centuries and
will undoubtedly stick with us for some
time now hold on everybody let’s not
jump to any conclusions whoa number 6
Batman the Animated Series
DC animations have seemingly adapted a
more anime esque look with each new
series although not blatant in its anime
influences Batman the Animated Series
was arguably the first DC show to take a
page from Japan its dark tone
exceptional choreography and stylistic
backdrops have animate written all over
them interestingly the art deco design
of the Batman world would go on to
impact anime like Cowboy Bebop and
tobago the Silk Road travels both ways
now look my rude friend we can’t have
people cursing at each other on the
freeway it’s simply not polite number 5
Samurai Jack every episode of samurai
jack is a perfect blend of ancient
legend meets futuristic space opera
amounting to a new timeless fable years
of hard work we have rebuilt our
glorious past much of the show’s appeal
derives from the animation itself which
often plays an even greater hand in
moving the story along than the writing
and dialogue Samurai Jack owes its
success to the art and mood of various
anime not to mention the films of Akira
Kurosawa I know your artists way
but I have been trained to use the light
of course
series creator genndy tartakovsky also
gave the show its own original signature
through playful humor diverse characters
and fast-paced timing number four
The Legend of Korra oh this is the
sequel to another anime influenced show
that may or may not appear later on this
list
The Legend of Korra continues the Avatar
mythos in all the right ways what are
you talking about bending is the coolest
thing in the world Michael Dante
DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko not only
brought their wonderful Eastern inspired
world into the future but delved further
into the avatar origins – Korra
maintained everything that made its
predecessor terrific while also
distinguishing itself with political
drama the triple threats the red
monsoons the Agni Kai’s all the Triads
are muscling up for something real big
being a Nickelodeon series Korra may
have been too sophisticated for its own
good but it’s legacy will live on for
generations
number three The Boondocks
I am the stone at the Builder refused I
am visual the inspiration that made lady
sing the blues I’m the spark dimension
idea pray the same spark that lights
disarmed so did you kiss on December
your flight from cartoonist Erin
macGruber The Boondocks draws a lot of
its influence from samurai champloo Wow
except instead of wandering samurai our
protagonists are two african-american
brothers and their grandfather living in
a white suburban community I’m trying to
explain to you that Ronald Reagan was
the devil Ronald Wilson Reagan each of
his names has six letters six six six
man doesn’t that offend you
you wouldn’t think that anime and
hip-hop would go so well hand-in-hand
but this melting pot is surprisingly
fitting for a show that’s largely about
culture clash if I pick one up and put
it to your face pull the trick will you
be dating the boondocks even squeezes in
some intense and thrilling action
sequences that are undeniably anime and
the style lends itself to any genre
including piercing satire with strong
social commentary wait a minute I’m
white number two Teen Titans
aside from putting the spotlight on five
heroes that are typically regarded as
sidekicks Teen Titans is one of the most
distinctive DC animations for its
self-aware anime twist the exaggerated
visual style is always effective here
whether an episode is mainly played for
laughs
or centering on a character’s emotional
turmoil you want to yell at me too
everyone else has and I can’t blame them
it additionally works magnificently from
an action standpoint with the combat
consistently being vibrant speedy and
thrilling this interpretation proved so
successful that it’s now actually hard
to picture the Teen Titans outside of
their anime style so are you going to go
quietly or is this gonna get loud before
we get to our top pick here are a few
honorable mentions what is that is it
magic it’s a PDA I’m sending a message
to a friend in Tokyo a secret message
are you in there are you finished
sulking hurry we have work to do okay
okay I’m coming maybe I can help people
I mean really helpful not just you know
make things worse
number one Avatar The Last Airbender and
although his airbending skills are great
he has a limit to learn before he’s
ready to save anyone
just as our hero is charged with
maintaining harmony between four nations
avatar the last airbender finds the
perfect balance between eastern
animation and western appeal everything
from its art direction creative use of
martial arts and its spiritual themes
all scream anime don’t you know fans
just make flames stronger even if you’re
a die-hard anime fan this is a masterful
