Top 10 90s Anime Intros

[Music]
[Music]
these tracks open the gates of anime
during our childhood welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re counting
down our picks for the top 10 90’s anime
openings and intros
[Music]
playing for this list we’re considering
both English and Japanese versions of
each opening as long as they were
released during the 90s
[Music]
number ten just communication Mobile
Suit Gundam week
[Music]
serving is the original opening to the
mega successful Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
just communication quickly gets our
blood pumping for the mecha warfare that
was about to ensue it’s got all your
typical 90s anime opening tropes hair
blowing in the wind an abundance of
tilts and pans and more flashing lights
than an EDM concert
many of you may be more familiar with
this instrumental ending theme if you
caught the show on Toonami back in the
day but for our money just communication
is begun to win visa
number nine through the night outlaw
star
[Music]
damn this opening hits you like a ton of
bricks through the night takes no time
to get fired up which is fitting for an
adrenaline-fueled space opera with new
rigs this song was for many their first
exposure to j-roc and it was
surprisingly kept in the western
broadcast of the shelves
we
rival
[Music]
why can’t you
bad
setting the stage for the cool and
stylish adventures of Jean star wind and
his crew this song never got tires him
to listen to over the play four episodes
that aired
[Music]
meet Ellie and break did you ma are the
champions by Paul Gordon Digimon digital
monsters
alright alright you know this isn’t
exactly the most lyrically adventurous
song and many of you out there may
complain that you prefer the Japanese
open and go okay that call going out
there let’s let the Holga Basha
but this song your wormed its way into
our hearts nonetheless it’s catchy as
hell I mean we’re still singing it
decades later just not that awful digi
rap from the movie though save the world
from a digital Vasser from the messages
your master above all it tells you
something you need to know in so many
words did you mind digital monsters
Digimon are the champions Nev they say
more probably but they’re not gonna
tima
number seven smile bon yuu-yuu hakusho
[Music]
here’s a song that’ll put a smile on
your face this was the first and only
theme for Hugh hakusho which follows
spirit detective you skate romesha as he
kicks down some of the nastiest ghosts
and demons around we have to say though
that this song takes a pretty cheery
approach to such a dark show no
complaints here it somehow works smile
bomb was later covered in an English
version of the show by Sarah white and
Carl fish keeping the song a bit more
worldwide popularity
[Music]
Oh
and number six
Dubey serial experiments lain and you
don’t seem to
[Music]
turn
it’s high time we moved to the more
avant-garde realm of anime written and
performed by English rock band boa Dube
matches the melancholy nature of the
series
[Music]
you
[Music]
Boas lead vocalist Jasmine Rogers
provides eerily haunting vocal work that
blows with the dark and deceptive tone
that serial experiments lain portrays it
adds another level of surrealism to an
already mind-bending premise one you
might not find in any other series hell
you could probably show this song to
normies and they’d be none the wiser
[Music]
number five Sailor Moon Sailor Moon
right
she is
you love it come on whether you watch
the show or not this little number
managed to reach your ears back to the
90 somehow you get a glimpse of
everything the show has to offer
kick ass ladies villainous monsters
romance and sparkle
[Music]
ah
the song actually uses the same tune as
the Japanese opening for Sailor Moon s
by Dolly though that version didn’t have
this bodacious guitar sodium
[Music]
number four tank Cowboy Bebop
[Music]
[Music]
make way for a 90s classic the first and
only suitable opening for spike in the
bebop crew tank as a layer of class
we’re already a big space Lester whether
it be the form of the jazzy upbeat drum
line or the thunderous horn work from
the seatbelts tank digs cowboy D bump to
the next level
[Music]
while it is primarily an instrumental
piece it hasn’t stopped fans from
strumming alarm accompanied by
silhouettes and colorful backdrops at
this opening title as an aesthetic ooh
[Music]
number three Rock the dragon Dragon Ball
Z and balls sag
are you already singing along again it
would be overly simple to write a
transcript of this song’s lyrics but the
catchiness is still undeniable earning
its spot as the English opening for
Dragon Ball Z Rock the Dragon doesn’t
just depict the chaos and hardcore
action that zvz has in store for us but
it’s also a solid rock song
but maybe you are more familiar with the
Japanese theme head chala or the
Canadian ocean dubs theme song and while
they’re technically just as good he will
gladly rock the dragon any day
[Music]
number two a cruel angels thesis Neon
Genesis Evangelion
[Music]
with a she died
Holden
[Music]
who’s ready for a deep discussion on
philosophy that is cleverly disguised
his entertainment we certainly are
opening with Yoko Takahashi’s angelic
vocals the series follows teenager
Shinji as he saves the world against
invading monsters known as angels though
you might be thinking that this upbeat
j-pop song doesn’t quite fit the dark
themes of the show and for that matter
neither did the show’s director Hideaki
anno either in fact he actually wanted
to use the classical pull of etsion
dances by Borden so let’s see how that
would have gone
[Music]
yeah I think we’re just gonna stick with
the cruel angels thesis before we belt
along with our top pack here a few
honorable mentions
[Music]
[Applause]
Rosie
[Music]
number one Pokemon the Pokemon very best
ever was to train them is my car
if words already chanting along with
some of our earlier entries we’ve
definitely got you with our number one
pick the pokemon theme embodies what it
meant to watch anime during the 90s
pushed us to be ready for adventure
while at the same time teaching fans
core values and life lessons
the song here since been covered but
never in a way that quite captured the
magic of the original for kids didn’t
get a lot of things right with their
translations but with this song they
knocked it out of the park their list
what’s your favorite nineties anime
opening theme song ever arrived in Mecca
who do you call when your work sometime
around a dozen I’ve picked again this
thing that I try and you know that ain’t
