The Truth About Bulimia Nervosa

hi I’m Veronica watchmojo.com and today
dr. Howard stager is helping us to
better understand the daily suffering of
someone with bulimia nervosa bulimia
nervosa is defined by a recurring losses
of control over appetite in JEP assad’s
followed by some effort to compensate so
you have binges after which the person
will purge through vomiting people
sometimes try to use laxatives to keep
their weight down even though it doesn’t
work at all compulsive exercising as a
way of burning off calories fasting all
kinds of I didn’t know people gave blood
that’s a way of trying to get rid of
calories what’s misunderstood about
bulimia is it doesn’t mean that you’re
some kind of glutton or addict to food
if people have bulimia themselves say
what’s wrong with me I can’t say no to
food if you pay close attention to the
way somebody with bulimia nervosa
eats what she’ll often do is starve
herself all day long or tries to get by
with a couple of like you know carrot
sticks for lunch because she’s trying to
control what she eats and lose weight
and then finds them later at the end of
the day she can’t control herself around
food and that’s when the binge chapters
why is it more difficult to detect this
problem
bulimia nervosa doesn’t produce a
symptom that is immediately evident like
thinness it’s sometimes harder to become
aware of it until the person is really
willing to disclose that they have a
problem and seek help which they
sometimes don’t do because one of the
symptoms of bulimia is often terrible
shame dentists are sometimes placed to
identify bulimia nervosa so you see a
lot of the signs of purging through
vomiting on teeth and so they sometimes
do the first identification there’s a
sign called the Russell signed it was
identified by a very famous British
psychiatrist named Gerald Russell which
is a callous or mark on the knuckles
that happens when people’s provoked
vomiting by sticking their fingers in
there
so yeah that’s one mark that shows up
but it’s kind of rare and it’s not
common unless somebody’s really purging
at a very high frequency if there’s
something parents can do to help kids
have a better relationship with food one
thing is you know you can’t teach your
children anything that you don’t or give
your children anything that you don’t
have yourself so if you want your kid to
have a healthy relationship with food
and healthy attitude towards body image
you have to have one yourself and so it
starts at home I guess people have to
reevaluate some of their own assumptions
and as a society we really have to do
that because we live in a society that’s
nuts about being thin and controlling
what we eat so that very few the
majority of people in our society aren’t
comfortable around those things this
effect only women bulimia nervosa
happens more in women you’re probably
talking about 10 times as commonly in
women although all the indications we
have are that if bulimia is becoming
more prevalent in any group it’s in
males so boys and men are developing
more and more of this problem there’s a
close cousin of bulimia or another
version of eating disorder where there’s
binging but no compensation
that’s a disorder that occurs a little
more often in people who are older more
in the 40s age group rather than in the
teens and 20s and it also happens a
little more equally in men maybe two
guys for every three women well thank
you great having you you’re welcome
