The Sport of Rugby: Overview and Tips

this game is referred to as a game for
animals played by gentlemen hi I’m
Rebecca Braden and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’ll be
learning more about rugby tell us about
the sport what is the aim of the game of
rugby
well sim please put I guess the aim of
the game is to score more points in the
opponent you can do that by scoring a
try which is with five points you can
have a conversion after which is worth
two or you can score a penalty where it
can be taken from anywhere on the field
has to go between the post and that’s
for three points how is rugby similar or
different to American football well the
flow of the game in rugby is a lot
greater than it is in football football
is a very static sport a lot of stopping
and starting rugby it’s 80 minutes of
virtual continuous play you know when
you’re playing a 40 minute half you’re
running up for 25 minutes straight at
times in football the training is a lot
of really stop and start quick five six
second plays where rugby you have to be
constantly moving and constantly running
so you know you can have a play that
lasts for two three five six minutes you
know what equipment is necessary to play
realistically a pair of boots is all you
really need most guys wear mouth guards
as well for obvious reasons but they’re
not not compulsory and a little bit more
padding is sort of coming to play and a
little lot in the last little while
because of the guys are getting bigger
stronger faster and more injuries are
occurring he can have scrum caps which
is a little bit of a foam helmet and you
can put on also protects your ears from
my getting cauliflower ears like
wrestling yet and shoulder pads and sort
of other forearm padding and things like
that but generally it’s pretty minimal
there’s not a lot of padding to put on
and good pair of shorts good jersey and
a pair of boots and you’re good to go
what would you say draws people to the
sport generally the excitement of the
high intensity and being able to play
with a bunch of guys so you can go for a
drink after work and I really get to
know it’s it’s a great it’s great way to
change out the sport who tends to
gravitate towards the sport what skills
do you need to excel general athleticism
in rugby because you have to be able to
you know have those fast quick static
starts and movements like that but you
also have to have the fitness to
continue to play for you know 80 minutes
if called upon is somebody
has decent hand-eye coordination who is
able to you know catch a ball and run
straight and be a little bit athletic at
the same time tend to do pretty well and
obviously position-specific a lot of big
guys who may not you know have had a
bout of football in high school
gravitated towards rugby because it’s
one of the few sports you can play
competitively at an amateur level
outside of university outside of high
school whereas football there is very
very few leagues that you can actually
continually play after high school and
after University and I still still play
at a decently high level you have any
tips for beginners well I’d say you know
get out to your local club a lot of
grassroots rugby is starting to develop
that’s the best way to get out and get
your hands on a ball and get around the
guys whooping that we’ve been playing
for years and you know what they’re
doing and there’s no better way than
getting out pick out the ball and going
for a run
thank you very much thank you
