The Sport of Cricket: Traditions, History, Culture

it draws people from all over the world
with the one thing they have in common
is they’re a little bit a little bit
eccentric sometimes
I grew up in it in the hills of Scotland
so it was a very sad and lonely place to
be a cricket fan there was not many
people to play with a lot of sheep
around it was always my dream to play
international cricket I dreamed of being
a tearaway fat baller for England but it
was a very sad day at school around
lunchtime age 11 when I realized I was
never going to be good enough so I
lowered my sights and I set them in
Scotland it was even more pathetic the
day I realized it was never gonna cut
the cost for them but I I managed to
travel around we’d be lucky enough to
play cricket in more than 40 countries
purely as an amateur what that was a
huge rugby fan and growing up I was a
lot smaller than my brothers or whatever
and my eldest brother came in with a
cricket fed one day and said that he
plays at school so my mom signed me up
to their local team and it took me about
five years to actually get anywhere with
the game eventually it clicked as he
does with a lot of people closing in
around 31 now so my competitive playing
days are over so I’m coaching a bit more
now I spent the last few years playing
and coaching in Estonia in Eastern
Europe which is a very strong
development developmental side of it
though
we just grew up playing it really on the
street on the streets on I think it
might have been in 1983 when India won
the World Cup there’s this whole frenzy
going on and that’s when I really
started getting into it want to become a
Test cricketer found that wasn’t really
caught native mind wasn’t one thing the
body didn’t quite agree and all that
sort of thing crickets one of those
games where it’s like the individual
within the team sort of dynamic as
opposed to lunch sport where the
individual tends to get lost
no more mercy you’ve hit me every time
actually it’s a complexity in a sport
that actually attracts me more than
anything else and the game’s traditions
it’s it’s got a rich history lots of
very eccentric characters it’s a lot of
rich literature about cricket
I think cricket is one of the most
international games as that’s the second
most popular sport in the world and has
a long history going back hundreds of
years
so really has spread its roots very far
thanks to British soldiers very much
like syphilis so there’s travel very far
and wide something a lot of people don’t
realize is that cricket – the first
national sports of Canada and the first
national pastime of the United States
Benjamin Franklin helped formalize the
rules George Washington got his troops
to play in battle at Valley Forge to
boost in morale and said Johnny
MacDonald’s in 1867 when Canada became
Canada declared cricket the National
Sports what’s good about cricket Louis
there’s so many different sides to it
you have the batting you have the
bowling and you have the fielding and
you have the wicket keeping a sight to
that you have different groups there’s
the mental aspect to it is the cultural
aspect the historical the statistical
there’s a lot of things that come
together to make it an enjoyable pastime
for many people
in North America cricket tends to be
very ethnically based it tends to be
lead cricket there are actually very few
social cricket teams fortunately now
with the internet it’s managing to bring
a lot of people together to create these
social teams but in league cricket it
tends to be you have people from Punjab
in the Punjab team people from Jamaica
and the Jamaican team people from
turning the dad in the Trinidadian team
and for someone from outside those
communities it’s not always accessible
for them which is unfortunate but the
great thing with social cricket
anyone can come together no matter what
the backgrounds no matter what the
culture the age the sex nationality
everyone is welcome
he’s a very long game and I think once
you spend that amount of time playing a
game you get to know people very well
and I’ve made some very good friends
through the game the great thing about
cricket is you can meet someone from the
other side of the world and instantly
your mates
