The Making Of Halo 3

[Music]
in the finale to my interview with CJ we
discussed a bit about what exactly is
the master chief and then what does he
represent and how is it that the player
is able to feel linked to a character is
essentially a blank slate and how
cinematics and how that whole visceral
feel of the game really lends itself to
making the player feel invested so we
had a lot of really interesting points
to make about this let’s have a listen
we make a lot of effort in ensuring that
a cinematic begins with an action from
the master chief and so very rarely does
the player walk into a room in a
cinematic start without the player doing
something to initiate that cinematic and
so when you accomplish that and when
when it works well a lot of players
don’t even realize that hey I’m in a
cinematic now because they feel like
they did it themselves they don’t see a
difference between the master chief and
the cinematic and the master chief as
themselves in gameplay and that’s that’s
when I mean you just get chills when you
hear them talking about that how much do
you have to pay mind to the fact that
your cinematics may be invasive to the
gameplay experience and inadvertently
chop it up when we’re writing the script
on a constant daily almost hourly basis
we’re like how can we shorten this what
do we not need in this in this script we
transfer that right into the storyboard
and the animatic process wow this this
is clocking in at about two minutes
that’s that’s too long we need to we
need to bump it down how do you keep
people interested in the cinematics I
know people often have the instinct to
skip cinematics what do you do to sort
of make them as compelling as they are
pacing is extremely important in any
storytelling device but particularly
games because the patient can change
depending on how you’re playing through
right you can play through it twice the
speed of me or vice versa and this
storytelling and the pacing needs to
work in both of those experiences and a
lot of that is done through our music
which is very dynamic never before has
Bungie been able to polish the pacing
and storytelling of a game like we have
on Halo 3 the last two weeks of the
project we played through the game over
and over
and over again and every time we played
through it we made a series of changes
and during those two weeks the game
significantly improved I like five or
six hundred percent
