The Joy Formidable Talk ‘The Big Roar’

this alternative rock band isn’t afraid
to show emotion through their music
hi my name is Stephanie welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
to The Joy Formidable about the album
the big roar
I’d like to talk to you guys a bit about
your debut album the big roar what are
the main ideas of the main themes behind
this record it’s a very personal album
you know and it was written over the
year that we were together and I think
there was a lot of different things that
were happening to us all individually as
a band I didn’t knows a lot of intent
behind the album there still is a lot of
intent in the banners you know it’s
definitely a statement it’s a bombastic
album and you know it’s powerful
emotional nature is definitely very
emotionally charged sometimes it’s you
know on a very simplistic level
sometimes it’s you know massive
massively positive and other times it’s
really maniacally depressive you know it
takes you through a lot of different
emotions and that crunches out and just
being a personal record actually having
weight socially you know politically
so what is the music making process like
in the studio are you guys more of a
collaborative effort or is you know
someone writing the lyrics and then
everybody’s putting the music onto it
lots of different ways I think that’s
the most important thing is just to kind
of keep it really buried I don’t think
ever want it to feel too stagnant a
process once you pressurize I should
just be part of the fabric of who you
are in terms of right in and lay in and
wanting to get behind your instrument
wanting to create something and it
happens in lots of different ways it can
start off from a riff that come be a
lyric you know and it it’s somehow finds
its way you know into becoming an entire
song but we like to keep it very varied
i think is
and with us having such a busy schedule
and we love being on the road is hard
for us to come off the road so it’s
become you know a part of the family
that we are to be able to write on the
road and kind of you know just keep it
always moving keep it always evolving
we’ve got kind of the mobile little
studio whatever so easy to record
yourselves now that’s not we’ve always
done things so what’s nice about that
like we said has been able to get ideas
down whenever you feel them instead of
doing your tour in coming off and doing
your writing then we don’t really like
that process
you guys that talk to me a bit about
your relationship with your friend we
very much carved things for ourselves
and the fan base has been so so crucial
to us in terms of being able to make
records and sustain ourselves on the
road so they they should be naturally 20
fund a really important part of what
what you doing but there they really are
important they don’t lick take to us the
way that we write I mean of that that
has a gun actually from us and nobody
tells us what to do in that sense but in
terms of the way that we present things
for them are making sure the shows and
the commitment colors and the
merchandise and the the releases that
we’re doing you know they’re definitely
you know set up for for our fan base
the connection that we have with them is
very true just because of the way the
band’s evolved it’s not had a fickle fan
base people have come to see us because
there they like the record or they’ve
seen as live somewhere before they
caught us by chance they’re not being
told to Rikers because we’d be hiked up
or you know or they’re following some
sort of like latest you know walked in
when we get up on stage no want to feel
the you know they’re there because they
want to people want to be there I much
I’d rather have a tiny tiny fun base of
people who you know I’ve actually
actually escaped and into music and what
you singing to them actually mean
something so and a very important to us
and quite a genuinely you know he
actually took 40 of them out for curry
the other day so how it’s going to be
lovely i could have taken them all home
with me oh yeah really poisoned every
single that wasn’t us it was the curry
house so we won’t be going there we’re
not liable okay
