several of their popular short comedy
skits have been turned into full-length
films I don’t care huh what they want
the real thing ah welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’ll be taking
a look at the various movie adaptations
of Saturday Night Live’s most popular
characters speaking aspects having
flourished as a late-night comedy sketch
show since 1975 due to its over-the-top
characters it was inevitable that SNL
would eventually seek to capitalize on
their popularity and ready-made fanbase
this brings us to their first and
arguably most well known film adaptation
the Blues Brothers portrayed by dan
Aykroyd and John Belushi quickly caught
the eye of Hollywood and the duel was
offered a film in 1980
despite flopping upon its initial
release it grew a large following on
Home Video and remained a cult
phenomenon due to its smart script and
explosive soundtrack
first you trade the Cadillac for a
microphone then you lie to me about the
band
now you’re gonna put me right back in
the joint they’re not gonna catch us
we’re on a mission from God a decade
would pass before another SNL creation
would be given the same opportunity on
the silver screen
the result was 1992’s Wayne’s World
starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as
two head bangers with their own cable
access show miraculously it became one
of the most successful SNL movies of all
time and it was rewarded for being able
to connect with its young audience cool
yeah we’ll stay and hanging around with
yes as a result of its financial success
it was given a sequel the following year
sadly the follow-up was unable to
recapture the spirit or attention of its
forerunner however it was still
infinitely more successful than 1993’s
conehead which simply confused
moviegoers who are unfamiliar with the
original sketch
SNL Films hit rock bottom soon after
with the release of 1994’s it spat a
movie so terrible that the studio axed
its theatrical release I know about
these music industry parties sex drugs
and rock’n’roll as if that wasn’t bad
enough they also pulled Al Franken’s
Stuart sages family from theaters early
due to it being a complete creative mess
in a desperate bid to re-energize their
box office attempts a sequel to The
Blues Brothers was commissioned despite
the best of intentions the follow-up was
unable to rekindle the magic of the
original that same year Will Ferrell and
Chris Kattan decided to reprise their
nightclubbing personas in a night at the
Roxbury I broke the window again
despite some hilarious moments it was
heavily panned by critics for continuing
the trend of featuring OneNote
performances and a plot which had been
stretched well past its welcome and
wouldn’t you know it Molly Shannon then
got her shot with superstar based on her
annoying and semi creepy schoolgirl
persona
what are you doing with your hands so
nose when I get nervous I stick my
fingers I never my arms and I smell like
that while that film missed the mark as
well it did manage to outperform the
ladies man a film considered to be one
of the least funny comedies ever made
yeah we did a pretty messed up junk at
the same time Mike Myers personally
canceled the pre-production of the film
based on his German character dieter
from sprockets
unfortunately this bid to save his
reputation as a comedian cost him 3.8
million dollars in a lawsuit with
Universal Studios it was another decade
before SNL made another attempt at
full-length movies one thought
their next effort was the MacGyver
parody macGruber in 2010 this time the
studio paid special attention to provide
action and comedy as the low-budget film
success would help decide the fate of
future attempts to adapt their comedy
sketches to the feature film format how
did you know I was wearing a bulletproof
vest you’re wearing a bulletproof vest
awesome
