The History of Skatewear Brand Vans

since 1966 vans has come a long way
hi I’m Veronica watchmojo.com and today
we’re learning more about the famous
skate where brand from the co-founders
son himself Steve Van Doren can you
start by giving us a brief history of
vans
my dad was in Boston moved in California
had a dream about making his own shoes
we started in Southern California and
had our own factory we actually made
shoes in the United States for about 30
years and then we moved all of our
factories offshore the early days of
vans when customers would come in they
would communicate I want that shoe in a
blue or a yellow and my dad would show
the lady let’s say yellow she goes oh I
want a brighter yellow my dad’s come on
she sees a manufacturer my dad finally
decided the very first day vans was open
that we would do custom-made shoes he
says ladies if you go down to the fabric
store get 1/3 of a yard of material
whatever color shade you want bring it
back I’ll make the shoes for you and we
being a brand-new company couldn’t
afford to advertise so the only way to
advertise was to tell customers about
what we could do we would make wides or
narrows or you could come in and order
green in the front
checkerboard on the side orange on this
side pink in the back and make the
tongue navy blue we do it because nobody
else could do that you started off with
the deck shoe since then what’s the most
popular shoes that we’ve seen throughout
the years 45 years ago the number one
shoe was our authentic today in 2011
vans is number one shoe it’s still the
authentic so it’s nice that what my
dad’s thoughts of a shoe with a thick
pure crepe bottom that grips skateboards
and it’s kind of a casual shoe like
checkerboard was that Sean Penn Fast
Times at Ridgemont High
those shoes are still very very popular
today we do have a new chuckle oh that’s
a really nice new silhouette in the
skate field and our new surf line which
is really lightweight but the volt line
not everybody can have it but if you
want some nice Italian leathers
nice really cool fabrics I spotted the
one in orange on the back that’s got
Hawaiian all over that’s my favorite
right here when we think of the veins
she we often think of the checkerboard
shoe what brought that design to the
shoes the original story and I was right
there living it because I think I was
about 22 years old kids were sitting at
their guests at school and taking our
regular authentic shoes and drawing a
line in the rubber and then coloring in
checkerboard on the rubber so I saw that
and we made up shoes with the
checkerboard on the rubber for about six
months or eight months and then I guess
a white one on says why don’t we take
that checkerboard and put it on the
fabric so we did that put it on the
fabric then we lucked out knock on wood
and Sean Penn I actually had the story
always that one of our ladies at work
for us in PR Betty Mitchell brought him
to Universal Studios but Sean actually
shopped in our store in Santa Monica and
he went in and got a pair of slippers
checkerboard slip-on he brought it to
the producer of the movie and says hey I
want to wear this did fans mean to
tailor to skateboarders or did that
happen by accident skateboard has
adopted us they could come into our
store and our shoes lasted longer
because my dad had better material he
had better rubber he had better red
nylon thread and he had double stitching
everywhere and then we just followed the
trend we knew we weren’t with the
football basketball baseball but
skateboarding surfing BMX snowboarding
motocross those who are sports were all
individual sports and off the wall came
about 1976 where Tony and guys like
Stacy Peralta worked going off the wall
of pools and that’s where the same thing
that’s what we put it on a very first
skate she was at the wall with vans
helping people design their own shoes
what’s the weirdest thing someone asks
you to make into a shoe
I wouldn’t say weird but unique my
daughter just got married three months
ago I took some material from the
wedding dress and I went and bought it
ahead of time not out of the actual
dress and I surprised it with a pair of
shoes and has all this bling bling all
over it and stuff like that
but I’ve had you know we’ve had some
wild crazy shoes Weird Al Yankovic and
musician he probably has about 150 fair
events I always invited him down to the
factory and he’d go through all the size
11s and find all these Hawaiian print
crazy-looking things and I actually made
him a pair about two years
as in Australia and found if you know of
a troll doll that fuzzy troll doll this
fabric that was like orange green purple
yellow troll doll material I made a pair
of skate highs up for myself when I
looked at it my wife goes what are you
going to do with that because she knows
I’m kind of a wild and crazy guy I said
I’m going to give it a weird al’
yankovic and that’s why did I send him
up to hell it called me so they’re great
I imagine you have lots of shoes what’s
your favorite pair
I’m never been a collector even though I
found out collecting was really good if
you did it and you saved them all my
shoes have been worn not what you I get
I wear and then I put in the garage I
have my eighth wife yell at me for
having too many shoes in the garage and
stuff but it might be one of the newer
Native American prints I made out of
penalty’ material I actually went to the
Pow Wow this last weekend in Albuquerque
New Mexico and they make blankets so we
take the material to make blankets out
of it I made shoes up for the Native
American skate jam and they’re gorgeous
I made you slip ons out of that and it’s
probably one of those shoes there well
thank you so great to have you all right
take it easy
