welcome to watchmojo.com carbon solution
and joining me on this first installment
of hip mojo is CT more now CT when
you’re not doing this you work in
marketing when I first met you you were
a social media expert so what’s up with
that term notnot kid not hip anymore
well you know it doesn’t tell me
anything right what the social media
mean it’s a marketing term it’s a buzz
term made it means absolutely nothing
and it doesn’t tell people what you do
or what you’re about that and there’s
about five million social media gurus
experts and ninjas out there and like
how are you supposed to stand out and
that kind of crowd so I just kind of
kicked it so I’m a CEO I also block
quite a bit I write for TechCrunch and
media post I write for our own site if I
came to you and said should I as a CEO
be blogging and if so what should I be
blogging about what would you advise me
well you know CEOs are a lot like people
some of them should be blogging most of
them shouldn’t I think to be a
successful blogger you need probably at
least three skills when you got to be
able to have the right and not a lot of
people know how to do that well to you
got to be charismatic and let’s face it
not all of us are charismatic and three
you got to be really passionate about
you know your company and what you’re
doing and then from there you could
decide exactly what you’d be blogging
about but if you lack any of those three
qualities you should probably just focus
on running your business yeah I hear you
I mean all be writing a story and what I
always freak out is that there’s
somebody there going like is he talking
about me especially it could be staff it
could be employees it could be partners
suppliers whatever and I what I’ve
learned after five six years of doing
this is no man and ten years of writing
is no matter what your intentions are
and no matter how sort of neutral you
could be discussing a topic about
someone will interpret that as if you’re
talking to them so I think that’s the
other balance that I think is important
and then that’s me personally generally
speaking my sort of line in the sand is
if you’re the CEO of a publicly traded
company especially if you’re publicly
traded but any large organization you
probably shouldn’t be blogging
realistically because you got to run it
through council PRI are specialists so
it’s probably not even that sincere it’s
basically a press release but if you’re
a startup CEO even if you can’t really
write I think it sort of helps if you
sort of have that voice and you sort of
communicate with your audience and
partners and just sort of comment on the
ecosystem but again the the trick is
just make sure that people don’t
misinterpret that as your sort of
communicating to them through the press
which is sort of what athletes
coaches always talked about right and
you know even the big companies they can
benefit from somebody blogging it
doesn’t have to be the CEO you look at
big brands like Ford you know they have
these these evangelists who do a lot of
blogging a lot of tweeting are complete
social media whores and these guys have
actually really short up PR and public
relations efforts without seeing an
instance here and I think that’s a
possibility to what do you think yeah I
think the only time where I probably did
use the blog to sort of send a message
was when we were being sued by news corp
in our first year even though we’re best
friends now I mean there i think there
was the sort of legal debate that was
going on and then i realized that maybe
putting some pressure on the PR front
would actually help and it did but even
that’s dangerous because I sort of knew
a little bit about the law so I knew
what to avoid saying and what not but
this takes us to basically a good segue
to the second part of the show which is
if you are a CEO that doesn’t have a
board and sorry if you’re a CEO that
does have a board and has outside
investors does that give the CEO like
carte blanche to basically be a douche
and do things that are maybe not so nice
but blame the board and say hey my
investors may be doing an example we
will we’re going to take a short break
we’ll be right back and we’ll discuss
that sounds good
and joining me on this first installment
