Children’s Hospital about puppy love and
the benefits of pet therapy what exactly
is pet therapy pet therapy is a program
that was developed here in 2002 where a
dog comes into the hospital once a week
and spends time with our patients and
families what are some of the benefits
of having patients interact with dogs
there are multiple benefits depending on
the child for some children it’s doing
physical activity kids who have a hard
time getting out of bed motivation to go
see a dog gets them up and going into
the pet therapy room also the tactile
senses of petting a dog and playing with
a dog are very important and there are
multiple to each child how are the dogs
in this program selected the dogs are
selected with zuta happy quebec there
are the people who do the selection
process and make sure that the dog is
appropriate to work with children they
make sure that they’re healthy enough
and have all their medical exams done
before they’re integrated into our
program here how often do the dogs come
and visit patients here it’s every
wednesday and there’s a schedule so
children can select to either save for a
half an hour or an hour and sometimes we
actually do group activities so we can
pair a couple of children up together in
your experience what kind of reception
do the dogs get from patients usually
it’s amazing actually it’s always
amazing as soon as they come into the
room their face lights up they’re
excited initially they kind of think
it’s a toy dog they get closer and
they’re just overwhelmed by what they
see oftentimes kids who see here for a
longer time they look forward to every
Wednesday because they know the dog is
coming and they can do something so
that’s also another benefit to having
the program every Wednesday and is there
anything else that you like to add the
therapies an amazing program our
families love it and we
never had anybody have something
negative to say it’s always a positive
experience and it’s nice because it’s
something that the parents can choose to
be a part of and the children obviously
and when they choose to be a part of it
