Tegan and Sara on Their Grammy-Nominated DVD ‘Get Along’

as they edged closer to the mainstream
these twin sisters are only becoming
more comfortable in their skin welcome
to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with Sarah of Tegan and Sara
about their grammy-nominated DVD get
along as well as their favorite covers
and collaborations
the Grammy nomination the Grammy
nomination very unexpected still I’m
like what Grammy nomination we thought I
think that it was last year that it was
supposed to be nominated we just like
guess we didn’t get an army nomination
an ami I just call it a nominee now that
word nominated we’re Grameen Aden now
yeah I don’t totally understand award
shows or rules around those things we
just never wear that back like we’ve
gotten nominated for Juno’s a couple
times we never really want anything
we’re kind of those people we were like
average people Cellucci yeah we are
we’re sort of Susan Lucci I never won
awards at school or at like you know at
the year-end piano recital I would
always get like the like we have to give
everybody an award award like you know
like you have the best smile or like
thanks for not dying over the course of
the piano season or whatever I don’t
know but uh so to get nominated for
Grammy Opie was just really unexpected
but we’re psyched
how do you think you’ve managed to build
such a loyal fanbase I think it’s a
combination of things I think that there
is something it’s not just the music
with our band and although I used to
feel sort of uncomfortable with that
not because I was uncomfortable but
because I almost felt like people
serious people or music critics or
whatever people would sort of almost use
that as a way to reduce the value of our
band like oh it’s just a bunch of crazy
fangirls or whatever and it used to make
me really angry because I think people
do like us because of our music but I’m
also very aware that there’s a culture
around our band whether it’s because
we’re very outspoken and we talked a lot
and we make a lot of videos and you know
we’re gay so like there’s like there’s
all these little elements that I think
draw in people for other reasons than
just music after 13 years you start to
think like listen if they didn’t like
the music they wouldn’t stick around in
society and in our culture we really
love gossip we just do we were very
interested in like what is she wearing
like what is she eating who’s she dating
you know like this whole thing I think
that there’s something about Tegan and I
just being so four bows and like telling
everybody everything all the time and
talking all the time and telling these
little stories it really gives the
appearance of like a very 3-dimensional
band in a world where a lot of bands are
just sort of this is the music that’s
I don’t know if you guys do a lot of
covers but do you have a favorite I feel
like arrangement and and key wise a lot
of Bruce Springsteen Cyndi Lauper Prince
Rihanna like that stuff works for me
I think that I have a tendency to go
back to stuff that that was really
popular in my youth I mean who knows
what I was thinking about like dancing
in the dark when I was eight I mean I
just obviously was attracted and like
you know the the melody was very hooky
and you know whatever it’s like a ear
worm but uh now I love dance yet the day
I mean Courtney Cox was confusing I
loved I loved it didn’t know why exactly
but I now as an adult and as a
songwriter if I play it with a different
kind of instrumentation or played in a
different key now it’s not a happy song
as a sad song her like you know now I
can really understand the lyrics because
I’m an adult and I’m not eight
now you guys have done some
collaborations have those collaborations
influenced your head in the electronic
directionality think they had less
impact on the like the actual music
itself I didn’t think to myself oh this
we should be doing electronic music but
the experience of writing with people
who are looking at songs like in these
arcs
you never hear dance sounds like a
really subtle melody that took about 10
let’s just really get into like it’s
just like my own you’re just in your
invested Tiesto was really the first
experience I had working outside of it’s
like our world like indie rock or
whatever you know working with Chris
Walla on like the Khan and sainthood you
know he would never have said to me like
just write a better chorus you know he
would be like oh I get the chorus and I
understand where you’re you know it’s so
interesting you know whatever complex
and then but with Tiesto it was just
yeah write a better course just
something better maybe five more courses
that could be better
I just haven’t never been produced that
way before and it really got me thinking
like maybe my first course isn’t the
best course so it really influenced this
record because Tegan and I rewrote a lot
just just to rewrite just because what
if something better came out always like
I’m a genius it’s done it’s just done
now and then and then this record I
would actually be Seussville panicked
because there were certain songs that if
I hadn’t had that you know the the
emphasis like on like rewriting and
reaping and like thinking about it in a
different way I think some of these
songs would just never have gone to the
place that they if they did and it seems
now I want to go back to our old records
and just it’s like I almost want to
rewrite the records to get home so I
won’t do that
that’d be cooler I mean it would be cool
but I’m not gonna do it it’s too lazy
