Supervillain Origins: Ares

sara helper I was Wonder Woman supposed
to defeat an actual God welcome to
watchmojo.com actually we will explore
the comic book origin of Ares
I’ll take before we begin we publish new
videos every day so be sure to subscribe
for more great content as with most
comic book characters they’re often
reimagining as in different versions to
a characters past we have chosen to
primarily follow the storyline which
unfolded in 1942 Wonder Woman’s number 1
and 2 which was expanded upon in 1986
and 87th Wonder Woman number 1 2 and 6
and 2012 Wonder Woman number 0 looks
like we’ll have that dance after all the
character of Ares often known by his
Roman named Mars was directly taken from
greco-roman mythology he’s the God of
War so has the powers of a god
which makes him difficult to fight and
damn near impossible to destroy just ask
Wonder Woman as I think her from myth he
doesn’t really have an origin per se so
this video will focus on how he became
part of Wonder Woman’s rogues gallery
when Ares first popped up in 1942
leaders learned that he and Aphrodite
has long been an odds over whether the
warlike nature of men or the loving
nature of women was stronger with the
advent of World War two Ares seemed to
be winning
and so Wonder Woman was sent to man’s
world to teach Aphrodite’s message of
love Ares captured Steve Trevor Wonder
Woman Special Branch and used him to
lure her to his base on the planet Mars
although Ares initially got the upper
hand on her the amazing Amazon
ultimately won and earns the gods
unending wrap surely you don’t think a
god can be so easily defeated do when
Wonder Woman was rebooted in 1986 a more
complete backstory was developed in
ancient Greece Ares and Artemis argued
before Zeus Artemis wished to create a
new race of peace-loving women and
wanted Zeus is blessing Ares proposed
this Artemis presented a strong argument
that the gods received their strength
through the worship of mortals his men
died so did the god Zeus found the
matter beneath him and kind of washed
his hands of the matter
Artemis aided by most of the other gods
of the Pantheon then decided to create
the Amazons Gary used Heracles in order
to trick and enslave the Amazons
when the goddess Athena eventually freed
them they were led to a secluded Island
the mascara where they lived peacefully
for
thousands of years eventually Queen
Hippolyta created a child out of clay
which six of the gods and goddesses
brought to life and blessed with
exceptional powers this child was Diana
who would eventually become Wonder Woman
in the modern era an Oracle told
Hippolyta that Ares had gone mad his
drinkin increased exponentially due to
some new mysterious power in man’s world
if he could not be stopped then the gods
themselves and the entire world would be
destroyed
thus Diana was chosen to leave the
mascara in order to fight Ares but
before this could happen
Ares hatched his own plot Ares
controlled human underlings with a lust
for power and war he used one to send
the peace-loving Air Force pilot Steve
Trevor on a mission to bomb and destroy
famous Kara an unwitting pawn
Trevor fought back when he discovered
the purpose of his mission but it was
too late fortunately Wonder Woman
disposed of the bomb and rescued the
unconscious Trevor then armed with half
of a mystical amulet that would defeat
Ares Wonder Woman was taken by Trevor to
man’s world
Wonder Woman soon discovered Ares his
plot to have his minions take control of
the nuclear arsenal creating a war that
would entirely decimate the planet you
know because power mad gods do that kind
of thing with Steve Trevor and several
other new friends by her side Wonder
Woman fought to prevent this catastrophe
from occurring it was the 80s it was
impossible to have a plot without
nuclear war but soon came down no
surprise to the hero fighting the
villain alone Mary’s and Wonder Woman
squared off in a mighty battle which
only ended when Diana used her magic
lasso of truth to make Airy see the
insanity of his plan realizing at last
that the destruction of Earth would mean
his own destruction
Ares took Diana’s half of the amulet and
fused it with his this restored order
and balance to the world
there he’s been promised to stop taking
an active role in the affairs of Man
unless Diana to save humanity from its
baser impulses Ares came back of course
but it wasn’t until the new 52 reboot
that a truly new version showed up in
this retelling Ares is simply named war
he adopted the young Diana as his
protege teaching her the ways of a
warrior one of wars rules was that a
person should show no mercy to one’s
opponents but Diana could not follow
this rule seeing this war ceases to be
her mentor and abandons her along with
his secret ambition that Diana should
someday become his reply
as the God of War who is this young
woman Ariat has made some appearances
outside of DG comic books but not as
many as you might think maybe being an
actual God from mythology makes it hard
for him to fit in with DC superheroes or
maybe they figure that Darkseid got that
whole omnipotence God of War thing
already covered it’s over you lose all
right this time but I’ll be back and
sooner than you think
do you agree with our picks check out
